If you don't know how long to water your lawn per day or how many days a week your sprinklers should turn on then you aren't alone. Most people have no idea how to water their lawns well even if a professional sets up a full sprinkler system for them.
► See this article for more ways to use less water in the lawn: turfmechanic.com/how-to-use-l...
In this video, I suggest measuring your water on the ground in optimal conditions first before addressing the small factors like emitter diameter or installing pressure reducers.
You can use coffee cups or for better precision, I use a small arsenal of in-ground irrigation collection and measurement cups to figure out how fast my sprinklers cover each irrigation zone on my property.
► You can pick up your own collection cups here if you like buying cheap tools online: www.amazon.com/dp/B005C5OP8G/...
► For above-ground sprinkler setups I also recommend using multiple low-to-the-ground sprinklers per zone rather than one large overhead oscillating sprinkler. A good option option is this above-ground spike gear drive sprinkler from Orbit which can be priced out here: www.amazon.com/dp/B000FJX4IQ/...
► You can also see some of my thoughts on which types of sprinklers are better for higher wind environments here: turfmechanic.com/best-sprinkl...
► As mentioned in the video you can see other factors that affect how long you need to water your lawn on this blog post: turfmechanic.com/how-long-to-...
► Finally see the following video where I explained how I limit moisture evaporation on the ground using a very affordable product I was able to apply with just my everyday garden hose: shrsl.com/2j7ak

Thank you for being clear and explaining this subject. I have an automatic sprinkler system with 4 zones and my water source is ditch water and is supplied from my HOA. My annual HOA fees pay for the use of this ditch water. The HOA supplies ditch water to each property that is pressurized and each property has a brass shut-off valve to turn water off to the property. This brass shut-off valve is located in the front yard and in the corner of the property where the phone pedestal, cable pedestal, etc. are located. This brass shut-off valve is the point of where the responsibility of the HOA ends and the responsibility of the home owner begins. From this brass shut-off valve my water is carried into my property in a 1 1/4 inch PVC line and before my manifold I have a hose faucet followed by a brass gate valve and then the inline "Y" filter. On the discharge side of the filter this 1 1/4 inch PVC line is reduced to 1 inch and this goes into my manifold. All four valves are 1 inch and the water line coming out of each valve is 1 inch. Since there are numerous properties "sharing" this water at any given time the flow rate and pressure can fluctuate throughout the day. I have my timer set to start watering at 8 pm as this is the time when no one else near me is using water. My flow rate is 6 GPM and the pressure is 20 PSI. As a result, my sprinklers underperform and are anemic in their water distribution on the lawn. Each zone has between 6 and 8 sprinklers. I have determined that the piping in each zone is working properly and that there are no brakes in the piping. The 1 1/4 inch line may or may-not have a brake in the line. I have yet to determine what the status of this line is. My house is on a cul-de-sac and all my neighbors have thick lush green lawns. My lawn is not in the same league as my neighbors. Therefore, my problem seems to be with my system and not with the HOA water. The brass shut-off valve at the front of the property does open and close as I have tested this. This valve is open as far as it can open. Do you have any ideas on how to solve this issue?

Great video! The only water I use to water my lawn is rain water that I collect from my roof , I can hold about 1700 gallons when all tanks are full. I use irrigation pumps from those to water the yard. 👍🏻

Another great video Brian! I agree with you 100% about watering deeply once per week as opposed to spreading the watering sessions throughout the week. Three 20 minute sessions for my 2 zones in the front lawn and 2 15 minute sessions for the east side of the house. I also manually control my irrigation system the exact same way you do. Mow 2-3 a week and have had great success following your advice with these suggestions you’ve made in this and other videos as well on these topics. Thank you brother! My lawn front lawn is probably a month ahead of most of my neighbors at the moment. I had green up back in March lol. Going to be applying some Andersons humid acid dg sometime this week as well. You’re the man bro, keep up the great work 🙂🤝

I am in the process of testing out the Orbit B Hyve smart spinkler controller. You can set soil type, number of heads, type of heads, slope, drought conditions, etc. It is wifi connected and is supposed to monitor local weather and adjust accordingly.

Good info, Brian! Is there a reason why you don’t have a rain sensor on your system? I had one on our system at our last house and it worked great. Was always funny to see people’s sprinklers running during a rain storm:) Never understood why they didn’t have one installed when their system was put in. I always set mine to come on twice a week around 4am, obviously to avoid sun and wind loss. I’d leave the % at 100 and adjust the length of time accordingly depending on the time of year/temps.

When you're using those irrigation measuring cups, should they be put on the edges of the lawn or the middle? Fantastic recommendation to irrigate the same day you get partial rainfall. I've always thought it would be better to not irrigate on that day, but it makes logical sense to do it on the same day.

Hi! I watched the video and didn't really understand it all. My temperatures are all really close to 100 degrees now. Between my backyard and my front yard, I have 7 zones (I think). Do I water one zone a day for an hour? If so, won't the rest of my yard suffer? It seems like the more I water, the more taller the weeds get. I mow twice a week. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for making all these videos; they are very helpful. I appreciate your time.

Awesome video! I probably suggested/asked this before, but what do you think about HYDRETAIN and who it's made for?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
It's part of my strategy last year and will be a stronger part of my strategy this year too...it will also be a component of part two to this video. It helps slow evaporation of water once its in the soil which of course helps minimize hydrophobic soils and helps you stretch out the time between watering sessions. Some people pay a lot for water so minimizing the amount of water used can save money making the purchase of this product a worthwhile investment imo.

Are you happy with those pop up rotor sprinklers. Are the Hunter or Rainbird? I’m thinking of upgrading my wasteful misters.
@JEK
@JEK 2 жыл бұрын
Look like Hunter, they are both great.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty happy with them. I use Hunter MP Rotators which require longer zone run time but lower overall water usage because less of a mist is used and the water flows in streams. The slower delivery results in less runoff or pooling too. I am pretty sure I can alter which rotators I'm using in each pop-up location to make my system more efficient but I'm close to diminishing returns right now. The smaller rotator will keep water lower to the ground which is also better so there's a couple places where I can swap heads out to benefit from that which I'll probably do this season. I'm sure rainbird has something similar but it haven't looked into their line of pop up rotators.

Does hand watering change the variables completely or do the same principals apply?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
It changes variables in the sense than hand watering is nearly impossible to do uniformly. You could vary things up by measuring how much comes out of your hand held sprinkler per minute and calculate how long you'd have to hand water an area to get a single inch of water on the ground but you lose accuracy in the uniformity of the watering session. Even if I was hand watering 100 square feet it would be hard to get the same amount of water on each square foot of space no matter how hard I tried.

watering between 6:00 to 9:00 am would result in evaporative loss of water, would be better to water at night, say at dusk? They say there would be risk of fungus, but I have'nt seen this happen. Please comment, Thank You!

Using cups to measure inches per minute doesn't make any sense. Wouldn't the measurements be off depending on what size cup you used? There's got to be a standard size cup to do this with
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
If the cup has straight sides and a flat bottom then that means the opening at the top has the same area as the flat bottom. A measurement of this is a cylinder and a variation of the rain guages you buy for this purpose...only difference is you have to measure the volume manually with a ruler vs checking the side of the rain gauge. Hope that explains the concept good enough.
