It’s key. It’s the only way you know. If you have 40 parts to mill, you need consistency. It took me hours to calibrate my saws and fences. Guess what? Then you have to re check too. I do it just before a large run. One offs I’ll eyeball it and it’s fine. Otherwise trouble shall brew!

Great Video! Thanks! A tip from the micro-jig info: You can pre-cut a slot with your table saw along the desired dovetails to help guide and alleviate some work on your rather expensive 24$ router bit if you are cutting a lot of tracks. I get really nice and clean straight dovetails when I pre-cut. Peace!

The calculator is invaluable. Until I learned how to dial in my saw and pushed past the doubt I had to make a sled(and other jigs),I wasn’t getting all I could out of it. Not only did it make to tool more useful but it was valuable practice and a confidence builder to make other things

Thank you for making this video. I am recently retired and finally have time to make woodworking one of my main hobbies. I already built a crosscut sled but now I see how useful and essential these other jobs are to move to the next level. I especially like that you demonstrate the use of dovetail slots. This is great because it allows a beginner to start getting great results without spending lots of money right away on aluminum T-slots and the other hardware that is required to work with them. And of course I'll be able to build the jigs faster. Thanks again. 🙂👍

You can build a thin rip jig, too, though it requires a couple parts you may not have laying around. I had a small wheel bearing that I mounted in the end of a thin piece of hardwood, and routed a slot for a miters slot clamp that I borrow from my diy feather board. I agree it is a very handy thing to have whether store bought or hand made. 👍

Nice. The coolest hack I ever built is a 36" square corian router table - you can go on CL and almost aways find contractors remnants recycle and get them for $100. They cut on a table saw, stupid easy, always flat and a way slippery surface and no issues. I use it all the time; made my rockler obsolete

Thanks for all of your great videos. Even when I have plans I like to draw out things in Sketchup, It gives me a better picture of how something should go together. The jointing jig was a challenge. After you draw the 1st dovetail groove, the edges are no longer parallel so the push/pull tool won't work. Have not been able to figure out how to get it to "Push thru". The only way I could figure out to draw this was to draw 18 blocks with half the dovetail groove on 2, 3, or 4 sides, then line them all up together. I'm using Sketchup free, Does anyone know of an easier way to draw grooves that cross?
