How will a Chinese made Motocross bike compare against a fully fledged race machine? In this video we pitch the Slam SMX250 four stroke head to head against the Yamaha YZ125 2 stroke to see if a super cheap £1,800 ($2,200) dirt bike can possibly compete with one of the best 125cc MX machines in the game...

The Chinese bike did well. But where I'm at in the middle of USA, There are so many used Japanese bikes (125/250 2 strokes) for under 2k that going for a clean old bike is definitely the best bet out here. And you don't lose money when you sell it.

Up here in British Columbia you can't find a parts bike (90's up two stroke) for $2000. For a decent early 2000's 250, you would be looking at $3500+. And when you buy it and look closer you realize that every bolt is a random hardware store fastner, and things are missing. Once when doing a top end job on a KX125, I found that the entire power valve system was just missing.

these Chinese engines are surprisingly reliable because they’re not heavily tuned. My younger sister's engine has already run for 400 hours, and the compression and everything else are still in perfect condition. Sooner or later they will fail like anything else but when they do it gives a decent gauge of how tough long term they are. I have a feeling that looked after they may well last a very long time due to that under stressed design. Throwing people like Sean on them and just saying "go for it" certainly doesn't hurt your rep though. Top job.

@siraff4461
@siraff4461 Ай бұрын
Depends on engine architecture. It looks like something from an old XR or maybe a KL type thing and if so the carb won't be the big restriction - it will be the ports, valves, cam and timing. Those old, under stressed designs are great for longevity but they just can't breathe like a more modern design. The other problem is when you start messing with them they start building heat they were never designed to dissipate so you get strange things happen like bores going oval after a few hard uses and so on.

Anyhow, I think these bikes are decent as long as you're honest with yourself about what they are. They make a reasonable, cheap, trail bike. They're great as a buddy bike... I don't have mine anymore, but if I had a friend who wasn't much of a rider, I would put him on one of those far before I would put him on my YZ490, IT465, RMX250, or KDX200. If the Chinese bike got wrecked, it would suck, but it wouldn't be nearly as much of a loss as the other bikes - nor is it likely to hurt the person nearly as badly as the other bikes can.

I’ve got 2 thumpstars , Australian Chinese bike brand . I’ve own the Japanese enduro models over the years and thought I’ll try a little 140 big wheel simply as a trail weekend ride . An equivalent model would be a KLX140 ( note klx is a much better bike ) . Met some riders and went for a quick blast through some tight sections track and it blew me away . I averaged middle in the group with my 140 . Until we go to open trails , then the better Japanese / euro bike took over and then I was placed at the back of the pack . Pros of better end ‘ Chinese bikes ….reasonable inexpensive, actually not cheap n nasty , can be relatively reliable with maintenance , plastics and some machined aluminium parts are of a high standard , welds on the bike are good . Cons …. The ergonomics isn’t right there atm but not far off , sure some bolts are rubbish , probably it will last 5 years but I’ve got confidence in the YX 140 motor to keep going , KTM riders won’t talk to you , but that’s just jealousy. ( if I was racing I would buy a KTM , please not hate mail ) Think of the Chinese bike as a vintage car , it goes well , just got to keep a spanner to it.

I rode something like this year's ago. Mate bought one brand new second hand for $1200. It looked great could tell it was barely used. He thought he had the deal of the century. I warned him there's a reason someone rode it once and sold it straight away so cheap to get rid of it. Took it to the local tracks he rode it up and back on one flat straight dirt road barely any revs said it's good. Asked me to ride it. Well it was the worst balanced puss bucket I'd ever got on. Was so front heavy it felt worse than an old school twin spring road bike in the dirt. I rode it into some lose stones at low speed the front burrowed in so I gave it a bit to lighten the front end and drive it out and save myself. It burrowed in further with a slight lean and dumped me on the high side. Those lose stones were hardly noticeable on every other bike I rode that day. From CR 80, RM 125 with an old It 250 engine I stuffed in the cradle and a hand full of other assorted bikes we had. Even a couple cheap Chinese kids bikes we were toying around on. That cheap 250 he bought was absolutely dangerous. Soon as he got a little confident on it it threw him to and he quickly realized what I was saying to him. Every other rider that day had a go on it had similar experience's and it sat there cold the rest of the day. No one wanted any part of it. It was sold near new straight away. (to another unsuspecting novice who figured he'd got the deal of the century. ) It was an absolute death trap. He went got himself a brand new yz 125 that week. And never looked back. I can't remember the brand it was, it certainly looked the part. I could feel in the first 5 meters this thing was dangerous. Maybe these companies have put a bit more effort into weight distribution and suspension since 2010 but for me till I feel it in action it's still a big fat no. I'll stick to my yz250 2t. Least I know it soaks up the bumps, corners, weight distribution, suspension and power to drive you out of a sticky situation is on tap. I grew up riding old bikes, anything with 2 wheels and a motor was a dirt bike to us. I'd say I've ridden some of the worst handling bikes imaginable in the dirt (some were old 70s roadbikes and even posty bikes) but this thing was absolutely terrifying and unmanageable. I am hoping they get better because new bikes have ridiculous high prices for entry level and good second hand bikes are still fetching very high prices for a beginner.

I'm actually on my second Chinese bike, I have a Tao DB17 that I've ripped on so much and it still goes strong. Most recently acquired a Lifan KPX250 and it does everything I need it to do and has yet to cause me any issues. I cannot stress enough to do your research, because yes that cheap cheap bike is going to be exactly what you get, cheap in every sense of the word.

If Sean hadn't missed that shift, I don't think he would have gotten by him, that was a fumble, but. It was still pretty close at the end. I think the roost would have kept him in loser place, 2nd. But that was a good race, nonetheless. Riding a new bike Is like nothing else you don't have to worry about so many little things. IF you actually do preventative maintenance on your bikes those motors will last so long, but cheap things get treated cheap.

While this model is an entry level dirt bike, there are some serious Chinese dirt bikes with fully adjustable suspension, bunch of aluminium/CNC parts with engines that are 300cc+ and over 30kW for half of the price of KTM bikes. As I owned bunch of Chinese dirt bike and other premium brands, those Zongshen engines last for ever with proper oil and maintenance. Parts are also largely available as most of the bike are similarly based. To be clear, these are no Hard Enduro competition machines, but are damn close to becoming one really soon.

My income allows me to try one of these as I went and ordered a TrailMaster TM35 250 and surprisingly it was solid and amazingly built well. After a NIBBI carb swap, chain and new brake pads it held a line. My 2017 YZ250f and 2010 KTM 260sx blow every corner off the TM35, but they also cost 3x what The TM costs..if you want fun for $2000 brand new make no mistake the China bikes have reached a new level of quality..performance will need some mods, but it is a decent bike and only $2000

THIS is the question I was looking to be answered, and I like the comments like so many Japanese used bikes for cheap and you can sell them for what you paid is a good argument, but I like the little extra doodads Chinese bikes have like cool lights, start up lights, etc at least on CK Moto street bikes. Now, let's watch the video and see what the answer could be. EDIT : I always hear Marty McFly in my head talking to Doc, "The best stuff comes from Japan." Hmmm... time will tell.

My father worked for a British bike company in the 50s. He said that when the Japanese bikes first came in they were like disposable bikes, flog them for the weekend then throw them away were there bikes were serviced and reused the following week. But it didn’t take long for the Japanese quality and reliability to improve to the point were they were dominating everything by the end of the decade.

Before you started I thought if you jumped it it would break bad weld. And when he missed a gear I thought, it did. Now how easy are the parts to obtain when needed? Purchase a $400 Chinese 200 engine for my high mile 200x It has been reliable so far. And with the better carb and supertrapp off the old 3 wheeler the performance is close (but not quite) to what it was decades ago. It's enough for when I'm in the mood to wheelie around. And the grandkids have a blast on the ranch. Although there are other toys as well. Do have a 1800 Valkyrie in the 43 Willys though. It's twice hp and torque. 🚜🤠🐂

I live in China and I bought a Hengjian HJ250, which was not bad at all considering the price. But, I had an engine bolt fall out, I some how sheered another engine bolt and bracket clean off, the fork seals were shot, the brakes were terrible, the chain broke twice, the battery was always dead and the foot pegs broke. There were a few other small problems I had which were cheap enough to fix but it was a bit annoying that after almost every time I rode there was something wrong. However for a seventh the price of any Japanese bike it was worth the money as it wasn’t necessarily built for MX. Would I buy another Chinese bike? No! Although they are improving the materials and technology is still way behind but they are getting better and better.
