Can you believe January is almost over already? This year, I've decided to live differently: less screen time, more REAL time. In this cozy author vlog, I'm showing you a behind-the-scenes look at my 2022 so far... revising a new (old) manuscript, what I've been writing lately, and the fun stuff I've been doing in the meantime. (Like tennis! And beach days! And posing like a pool shark wannabe. But also writing... of course.)
What have you been working on lately? Comment below and let's chat!

My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!

So... I wrote 40,000 words during NaNoWriMo 2020 (and got the daily emails from you!) and then did another 40,000 during NaNoWriMo 2021. I realized that #1: waiting an entire year to continue working on a novel is a TERRIBLE idea, but also #2: I can do something even slightly less intense than NaNoWriMo and start becoming a routine writer, and maybe even finish this darn book by April along with my fulltime job, band, and other commitments. I don't even have to push back my deadlines, I just have to make sure that when I write, it's because I'm showing up for myself and not because I'm trudging along miserably just to meet a deadline. All that to say, you've been a huge inspiration and help every step of the way, and I'm glad to see you being exactly who you want to be, doing exactly what you want to do.

I didn't expect to be so inspired by this vlog. I'm currently writing the second draft in my WIP and it's a chaotic mess. I just find it so uplifting that even published authors like you struggle with revisions and even want to run away screaming while doing so (like me practically all the time when I edit and write). Thanks Abbie! Here's to balancing plot and character on page along with writing and living irl!

Thank you for genuinely sharing some clips of you and some family, pets and such out of the house being active and enjoying life outside of your office/bedroom. It's some nice added elements to your usual videos; that I've watched so far anyway. My life has is very hectic and busy with children, work injury resulting in a lot of medical stuff, building a house, marriage etc. So I write when I can. Sometimes I'll go weeks without writing, and then other times I want to write and have to really sit down and close every thing else off to get going. Last year I wrote just over 20k towards my first draft. I have all the dot points to get myself to the end of the vomit draft, so I need to push myself to write more frequently. I don't want to put too much of a burden on myself though when it comes to deadlines too though. I definitely know I will enjoy the editing phase more!

a good comment you made was about not being able to remember the past year, and thats due to being in survival mode, when we forcefully make rigorous schedules our mind and bodies go into survival mode, when we are in that mode we dont have time to create short term memories, which lead to long term memories, which in turn creates large blanks in our memory and timelines. i did the same thing until i stepped back and realized i literally have almost zero memories of my childhood. it was scary to realize i was on auto Pilate for so long and missed out on so much even though i was a self-proclaimed prolific.

I’m doing the exact same thing this year with timelines. I decided to only give my projects deadlines when they are far enough along that they only need final edits. That point the creating is complete and only routine process work needs to happen. It’s more manageable, the pressure is off, and I can wallow in the creation process. And thank you for mentioning eyestrain. That’s been a major problem for me this year, too.

Ok but, the editing on these kills me. There are some videos- Sounds effects and cuts and stuff. I think it comes unexpected because I don’t think of you as the type to make funny edits, yet you do, and it gets a small laugh out of me. And that house analogy!!! Like yes!!! I can’t even read what I wrote back in 2020 it’s so bad- Just-so much exposition, I can’t even. And even though I had enneagram typed my characters and used the 3 act story structure (though the plotting process seemed forced as I didn’t know what I was doing) and scene cards to plan, the characters just feel so ooc. We’re going to chose to not talk about that first chapter where I do the classic “explain the MC’s daily life and how she looks”- ahhhhh it’s so cringy. Quite honestly, I’m just gonna completely replot it. I can’t even read it, it’s so bad. (Kudos to you though for reading through an old project! No joke that is the most daunting and possibly annoying thing!) “I’m not trying to sound rude. It just comes naturally.” I’m dead- Like, same could be said for me about things that I dislike- Pffft Why do I feel like on these videos, you’re happier? You’ve got a different energy, like sillier. It feels like the shift in myself from writing and keeping to myself to my personality at night when I hang around my younger sister. It just seems to be a “going from professional, no nonsense” to “let’s just have tons of fun and not really care what anybody thinks”. (No joke though, my sister is one of the few people who can bring out the really silly side in me, interesting enough.)

it's so great that you're trying to just enjoy life more! i have so many old books that are terrible and i can't get myself to try and revise them lol. Going back and fixing things is what I always struggle with. This year I told myself I want to finish two screenplays, the outsiders fanfic I'm working on rn, and the first draft of a mystery novel I've been thinking about. So far I'm almost done with act 1 in my fanfic and halfway through act 1 on my screenplay. I decided that for the first time I want to try and write my entire novel, revise it, and then maybe try and publish it. It depends on how good it ends up being haha

Just finished the first draft of my first novel! I've always written but never finished anything before now, and I'm so excited because I finally found what works for me :) A huge part of it was realizing I needed to make the character arc and theme the center focus of the book. I am glad you mentioned longhand. Mad respect! I always wanted you to show up to a "write with me" live stream with a pen and pad (college ruled). I hardly ever type my writings. I sometimes type so I don't lose the skill. I find longhand engages my senses more; the act of reading it into my tablet gives me another perspective. If it doesn't flow, I flag it and move on. My app also has a read back feature. Listening to it can be an eye opener. Thank you for your videos.

Great video! (As always!) Love the pool game montage with the music! I've just finished the first draft of a novel and I'm trying to read it through at least once with a fairly keen eye before I let my husband read it... Then while he's reading I can put it aside for a while and come back to it with fresh eyes 🤞

Hey Abbie just wanted to say that I'm currently making a webcomic and when I was figuring out my plot and writing my script I watched a lot of your videos and even though your advice is mostly for novel writers, I found that your tips on story structure and dialogue were super helpful to me! My comic is a revenge story but you've helped me make it much more deep and complex than just a girl getting revenge. I post chapters weekly and even tho I'm only on chapter 22 it's been having a lot of sucess and a lot of readers have complemented the intrigue and plot saying that they're really invested in the story and I haven't even gotten to the best parts! I owe a lot of this to you so a huge THANK YOU! I'll be recomending your videos to my comic creator friends!

You're very pretty and such a charming person!! :0 I don't watch your channel, cause I'm not into writing, but I like characters in general and I had one of your videos about building up a good character saved for a very long time, and I just stumbled up on that save and watched it back and afterwards I was curious, like "what's up with her nowadays?" and ye...those are my thoughts I started with; I like how easy-going and goofy you are and like so natural, like as you're speaking, it doesn't feel scripted, doesn't feel forced or like you wanna seem like a fun person to the viewers, you are just naturally like this. :) (Jesus christ I'm sayin 'like' so much I feel like I'm Shaggy lmao) Anyways, I just wanted to give this little compliment to you, you are beautiful and adorable and I love your smile and aaaargh I wanna hug you like you were a plushy! >~< Ye maybe I took that too far, sry for the simping lol, I said what I wanted!

Hey Abbie! Loved your video as always ❤ I'm so inspired to write these days thanks to you but unfortunately my university work is keeping me from it T-T Still I'm trying to work on creating a protagonist for what is going to be my first real original novel! I've only written fanfiction so far so I'm excited to use all of your amazing advice for my debut novel! Love you Abbie ❤
