Mark Gable ... And they had the support and backing of the Northern Democrats.
@57highland
@57highland 5 жыл бұрын
@Mark Gable: There was a racial incident at the beach in Chicago in 1919 when a black boy strayed into the "White Only" area of the water. He was hit with rock while in the water and drowned. "It" happened in many places in the North, as well. Besides, Jim Crow happened in the South because the Republican party finally realized it couldn't occupy the South indefinitely (Reconstruction), so the GOP just gave up and left Southern blacks to their fate, which was roughly another 100 years of harassment and death. The Southern Democrats were actually "Dixie-crats", far different from Northern Democrats and actually more similar to the modern Republicans (Goldwater and Nixon) who devised the "Southern Strategy" of courting Southern whites after Kennedy and Johnson (Democrats) had pushed through civil rights. You probably know all this stuff; you just pretend you don't know it and hope that other commenters here don't know it, either. "Sad", as Trump would say.

@Mark Gable: Wow, what stale nonsense! Lincoln went to war to preserve the Union; ending slavery was an afterthought. Even his Emancipation Proclamation freed only the slaves in the rebel states, not the ones in the border states that had not seceded. Of course, the ones in the Confederacy were not free until the war ended. But one editor, in noting the specifics of the Proclamation, said, that Lincoln had "freed the slaves where he could not (in the rebel states) and had not freed the slaves where he could" (the border states which had slavery but had not seceded; Lincoln let them go on with slavery to keep them in the Union). History is much more gray than black and white. Try reading it sometime.

What makes this film so important also ; if you do the math, we are watching people born around 1889-representing the FIRST Generation of African Americans born immediately after slavery. Such glideful-flawless-graceful moves of mathematical intelligence-artistry-classiness-brilliant geniuses. ⭐️💕⭐️💕⭐️💕

They are doing the dance called the Texas Tommy. That band in the background was possibly Sid LeProtti's band from the Barbary Coast. This dance had open sections that look like what we call square dancing. The closed sections of the dance were often danced with great verve and had acrobatic elements thrown in. The Texas Tommy paved the way for the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug.

Fun fact: I was doing research for a history paper on the Jazz Age and I was looking through old New York Times articles from that period. Apparently some people were so scandalized by jazz dancing that they got it banned, and there was one article quoting a woman complaining that because of the ban, kids were leaving farms to go into the city to look for dance halls (I imagine it was easier to enforce the ban in rural areas than crowded urban), and that white young men and women had begun frequenting black dance halls because of their "known dancing ability".

That is awesome archival footage, and brings a smile to my face. Oddly, it looks like a derivative of square dancing. But from 1:36 it is filled with such glorious gusto!

I just love this, looks like a special occasion with the waiters doing endruns around the dancers. The women are probably all corseted up, their waists hardly bend at all!

African-americans always had the best moves, the rest of us can only copy. What's more, they can do anything better if only given half the chance!
