For the min. size card, I've heard that PSA will sometimes do that on based on the thickness of the card. If a card was in an old screw-down case, it likely got pressed in and made the width smaller than PSA's specifications. As another person posted, you can resubmit and sometimes that will get it through at PSA. Otherwise, the other grading companies would likely grade it without issue.
@samhill93
@samhill93 Ай бұрын
Chris, this was a very well-balanced submission. Despite some of the uncertainties of PSA grading, you usually come out okay with some big hitters to make up for those small losses. I’m no Pats fan, but Matthew Slater is a legend in my book, that’s a great card to have. I really hope the induction of Devin Hester into the HOF opens the doors for ST legends like Slater, Josh Cribbs and so on. Special teams is a critical part of the game.

As always, thanks for your transparency, and all the breakdowns of pricing etc. It's very-much appreciated. I wasn't adding them up... saw a few losses and thought 'Chris might make a small profit, if lucky'. Was pleased to see it was a healthy profit/projected profit. Even after [Fe]ebay's fees (if selling via there), it's got to be over a 'bag of sand' profit. Can't grumble at that. 👍

Best cards in the order were the Ripken's. But the Montana looks pretty good for the assigned grade! I think graders, should have to explain why a card; got the grade it did. Grader's Notes: Won't solve everything. However, if the difference between an 8 and a 9, and a 9 and 10, could be hundreds. Sometimes thousands of dollars; it would be good to know! Because if you ask me. Most people couldn't tell the difference. 🤷‍♂

That barry bonds was part of a set youd get direct from topps and its known as "1995 topps finest bronze". As far as i can tell they do grade them, including the football and the hockey sets. Or at least they used to grade them, which would suck as I have the football & baseball set I wanted to get graded 😔

A bunch of premium brands were issuing metal cards back in the mid-to-late 90's. I have quite a few metal hockey cards myself. If I remember correctly Donruss/Leaf produced a one-off insert/parallel set called something like "Leaf Steel", and they were metal cards - presumably a dense aluminium - and they came with a peel-off coating (like Topps Finest). They're actually pretty cool cards produced in an era where brands were throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, when in reality it wasn't the cards themselves - there were a lot of awesome inserts, parallels and even base back in the mid-to-late 90's - it was the price point for the time. Some of those premium brands were pretty pricey, I mean $7.50-$10 bucks a pack sounds like nothing today, but back then, a regular pack of Topps was no more than .75 cents - not only that - but the premium brands gave you less cards, and at the time they were more of a "novelty".. Anyway, they still issue "metal cards" today, they're called Printing Plates, lol.... I wonder, will grading services grade printing plates?.. You'd think it would be tough to grade metal rather than cardboard.

Chris; An interesting experiment you might get try for the channel; take those “9” cards that you lost money on, crack them from their cases, and send them at the next expensive grading fee I think it’s $25 a card). I’d bet the cost of the fee you get at least 2 10’s back! Would be very interesting if PSA grades more liberally at higher submission prices. I know 2 collectors who sware by it (card submitted at lower prices getting better grades at high sub prices).

"making a mountain out of a mole hill" or so i would guess. The $25 loss is obviously not what he was intending. I’m normally not a conspiracy theorist but my spidey senses have been telling me that PSA applies more stringent standards to the GOAT cards regardless of what they assure us. My opinion is based on viewing hundreds if not thousands of reveals & seeing similar disappointing results. Lower Pop counts keep higher graded GOAT cards in demand which ultimately helps the company’s bottom line by relying on collectors et al to continue trying for that elusive gem mint card with continual submissions & then cashing in on upcharges when one lucky submission makes it to 10 in very rare occasions which probably align with the next appearance of Halley’s comet. And no, I didn’t vote for Trump 😉

Grading is so unattractive to me these days. Not enough added value and a monopoly in the service. Also, I believe the 1,500 added value is an overestimate unfortunately. Maybe your eBay account generates higher prices, but the average joe will not profit like that.

I just continue to watch you grading videos and how PSA repeatedly screws you over with their completely subjective and arbitrary grading. I have to ask why you even bother anymore?? Is it really worth having 14 of 15 cards get a 9 or less just to get that one ten??

I don’t collect or deal with sports cards but I feel the hobby is just getting hosed by grading companies. Every day Joe works to make money and all that disposable income is being sucked dry by grading companies and card makers with overproduced cardboard with no future value.

A lot of people don't care about making profits but enjoy collecting and actually like the cards. They get a high off of it. The thrill of the chase. There's worse hobbies out there. People spend billions on beer and end up with just a bunch of aluminum cans. Or alcohol like Pappy Van Winkle lol you get a glass bottle.

@@HarupertBeagleton-dz5gw Maybe they are the same people. I could see some of them anyway going to the bottle after losing on their profits (grades).
