Great info Chris. This is what I do everyday for work, just not usually for cards. One resource I don’t think you mentioned is the Terapeak research available on EBay for free. It now goes back two years. It’s under My EBay and then Research.

You should ALWAYS look at currently listed items, not just sold. What is currently listed is very important, you have to be cheaper than your competition, and if there is no competition you can price much higher. Comps are less important on rare cards like the harrison. I would have listed the james harrison at 299obo, and taken down to 200. No way should it ever sell for only 100. I sell about $300k of cards on ebay a year, so im not just talking out of my ass.

In a way the gold is a color match and looks great! Also James Harrison had one of the craziest plays in Super Bowl history. Def a player that would add a premium for a Steelers fan even over other random Steelers players

I would always start with the grading fee and go from there. The grading fee should be the first valuation in all graded transactions, the hobby is suffering in my opinion when sales of cards are below grading value

I price all my cards at AUCTION.. I buy on Ebay only. Dont do shows. I crack and resub all day. Then, do whats right by sending the cards to auction. Win more than you lose.

Great video and very informative for someone like me who owns some rarer cards but has never sold any cards. I think I am getting ready to parcel out some of them that no longer tickle my fancy.

Feel your a little low on the Harrison... and possibly the Jeter too.. Like many have said, the Steelers are just such an iconic franchise and have such a loyal fan base, that should add a premium. Somebody else mentioned the set collector as well and I can imagine there are a small number putting a gold set together. And the fact you can't find a sale raw or graded of the other 9 copies, that really bodes well that there might just be one or multiple people waiting for this card to pop-up. It's all subjective but I'd guess the Harrison to be more like $150-$200... and $125 a slam dunk. Regardless, a great video on how to tackle the problem :-)

100% agree with your methodology. It gives you a base, but in the end we are guessing what someone will pay. I bought a 1/1 recently. It was listed at $250 or B/O. I felt it was a little high, but bought it for $250. Because I wasn't gonna lose it to save $50. When it comes to rare cards, listing a little high never hurts. Worst case you get annoying emails from people asking for a cheaper price, instead of them actually sending you an offer.

Speaking of your 2018 Topps Brooklyn Jeter auto, I have a Juan Soto auto just like that as well. But I think it’s even harder for me to guesstimate the current value of it since it’s raw.

For that Jeter, having the two BGS cards listed is really advantageous. Price your better PSA 10 slightly above at like $1k OBO, the other cards are floor prices you can point to if you want to negotiate up an offer.

On eBay, they have the section called "Terapeak Research" where you can see relevant sales data up to 3 years ago. Definitely recommend using it if the past 90 days aren't cutting it

That's a cool Harrison card. I would have consider getting it autographed. I don't know if he signs often though, when the pop count like you say, is so miniscule...the auto may not be needed or add much value, but maybe it could. Not sure if Greg Olsen is still on commentary. Tom Brady is replacing him on FOX. Oh well. I'll stick with the Manning-cast. Bill Belichick ironically is joining Peyton and Eli. That should be interesting.

I would value the Harrison more. I think based on 2021 sales it’s 100 raw. I feel confident you should get at least 150 and 200 is very possible. Also have you used terrapeak? eBay’s version of 130point. Free if you are a seller. I find it is way better than 130point but not as good as cardladder. But again free if you sell on eBay.
@briandelauro3471

Hey Chris. I was wondering why you don’t ever mention that people should really be checking terapeak to make sure that the eBay sales actually were paid for. Even 130 point gives you sales that looks paid for but it wasn’t. Also with terapeak you can see 3 years of eBay sales (I think everyone has access to it as well - but it’s possible it’s only available if you have an eBay store. Do you still consider the completed sales that weren’t paid for valid comps when you do your pricing? I tend to only check terapeak for sales over $100 or less common cards that don’t have tons of sales. I figure it’s good info to get out there with all the comp manipulation going on now a days. Great episode though, keep up the great work man, love your videos.

Chris, comparing the Olsen to Harrison is spot on except one factor. Panthers v Steelers collector demand. I sell exclusively football cards and would carry at least a 2x multiplier simply because he was a Steeler great. Another factor that hurts Olsen value is he moved from team to team much more than Harrison, so Olsen has many fewer core player collectors buying his cards. If Greg gets a sniff at HOF consideration that will change but much Harrison has a much better chance at the Hall. Great video, love your content, see you in Cleveland hopefully

I think you undervalued the James Harrison by a little bit, his 2021 gold went for $95 raw when he had been retired for 4 years. The 2015 card is from when he was still active and the design and image is much better imo, I think that you could easily find a buyer in the $125-150 range

The Derek Jeter you have is an on card autograph where the stadium club was a sticker. I would value yours in the 450-500 range. I think you would be surprised on the Harrison. I feel you can get around 350 for the card to the right buyer. Thanks for the video!

I’ve heard you also say you can price a rare card high and see what happens. So when you value the card at say $400 do you then list it a bit higher and then do markdowns over time or have room for an OBO to land around $400?

For a card like the meter I would probably price it around $550 and take offers as low as $400. If it doesn’t sell, I would lower it a little bit over time.

Where would you place 2004 Topps Originals RCs Autos of Don Mattingly and Cal Ripken both 1/1's? Since 2004, there have been Archives releases with auto's but believe this is the first year of the buyback auto's for these. The 2001's were reprint auto's.

coming from someone who's probably submitted 20,000-30,000 cards to PSA, I used to share your frustration with grading vintage... In my experience there was a distinct difference in the way they graded vintage commons vs vintage stars, which is complete garbage.

I would argue Eric Kendricks is not a common though probably a very underrated player within the card community. Was a stud for the Vikings for many years and now for the Chargers/Cowboys. I am amazed that his Gold Prizm Rookie Auto in a BGS 9.5/10 is only worth $75. I mean how much better can it get?

Great video Chris. A follow-up conversation…for rare cards like this, when is it best to list as an auction vs. trying to find the right price for a buy-it-now listing? On a couple of occasions I have had rare cards auction for higher than what I had them previously listed for as a buy-it-now.
