My understanding is that the 3rd hand Skyhawks ex USN, ex RAN were purchased from Australia for about $25 million ( the RNZAF claimed they got a bargain , they were worth $75 million). Muldoon had two alt offers 12 Sepcat Jaguars second hand from the RAF, they proved superb in 91 Gulf war or 10 F-18 for NZ 400m. The Australian supplied Skwhawks were eventually sold to the US Firm for about $25 million about 2010, as they were low mileage, HMAS Melbourne being too old, small and crapped out to fly them. The long delay in selling them was simply that Clark and Gareth Morgan were conned into asking too high s price, you know 300 per cent excess, plus the fact NZ own new built McDonnel Douglas model were too high mileage.

it was a bargain , along with the air frames we chucked in all the spares and weapons , enough to last about 20 years apparently

The USAF have contracted Draken International (which use some of the Skyhawks and Aermacchis) in Red Flag exercises (check out Draken videos ----> , links not working at the mo)

I spent a week with 75 Sqn and went on a practice bombing mission it was good fun... they are with Draken now and I think the RNZAF should reinstate it's srike wing... possibly F35? 🇳🇿✈️

C'mon Jacinda, give New Zealand a fighting chance if anyone attacks and purchase 20-30 fighter jets. We'll be happy with F-18's. Easily justifiable protecting our country.

no way we're going to get attacked in the present political climate; we have some of the strongest international ties around the world, and any country or organisation we have pissed off is almost unanimously opposed by the rest of the world (and hence the rest of the worlds military). Besides, the operating expense associated with those planes and their armaments are absurd. With the current budget, even just a few F-18s would set back the defence sectors budget back well over a billion dollars over its lifetime. Those planes are made for strikes and assaults, for which we do little to none.
@princehalo5023
@princehalo5023 6 жыл бұрын
Sam, it doesn't specifically have to be F18's. You've missed the point. Also,the reason we do little to none attack missions is because we have nothing to attack with,yeah? As for the budget,the economy is doing ok and with no protection protecting it what good is a budget? Yeah we have ties but the damage would have already been done by the time help arrives.(worst case scenario)

I get what you're saying, but ask any political analyst and they would say a significant attack/incursion on New Zealand soil is a romanticised nightmare. Besides, any modern jet costs an absurd amount (not just F-18s) and the money spent would have a serious opportunity cost, and would require massive expenditure changes in the government budget, drawing money away from Education and housing, areas which are in dire need of funding. Not saying there's not a chance of an attack, but considering it's liklehood and the opportunity cost involved, I'd prefer to wager my bets on socioeconomic investment. We have so many alliances, we would have hundreds of jets at our aid. Also, the only 'worse case senario' which would create a strike against New Zealand so fast our allies couldn't respond would be a nuclear attack, in which case we're screwed anyway and Jets wouldn't help anyway.

Sam,You seem to be a firm believer of politicians in what they say?(referring to "just ask the political analysts") You're also stating the obvious with restructuring the budget,yes this is what happens my friend as in every other first world country. Look the whole issue doesn't mean too much to me but lets be real here, we have an army which is the same size as Fiji. Now oh now do you get my point???or are u a politician your self who opposes this??

In my opinion, the NZDF will never be a "defense force" in the foreseeable future. The NZDF work really well at aiding other government agencies, humanitarian efforts and purely domestic threats. As Sam Corder has said, New Zealand purchasing even a single squadron of fighter aircraft is not economically justifiable. The large majority of the public will be outraged at what is honestly a waste of millions of dollars which could be better spent helping our people now rather than preparing for a threat that. won't happen any time soon. I do, however, absolutely support the recent order of P8s to replace the orions and am eager to see a fulfilling replacement for our c130 workhorses.

If we're going to buy F-16s, we may as well buy the F-16V Block 70 Vipers, which has on-board oxygen systems, Auto-GCAS (Ground Collision Avoidance System), BVR (Beyond Visual Range) engagement capability and carry both guided bombs, long-range air-to-air missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles.

The price for the seven Skyhawks is well short of the $155m offered for all the jets by a US pilot training company which was never able to conclude the deal. It is also less than $9.4m spent by the air force keeping the aircraft in storage since they were grounded in 2001 when Government decided to disband its air combat wing, rather than buy new fighter jets. A4s ended up selling for $7.4Mil in 2011 Idiots lol

All part of the process of leaving N.Z. defence to Australia, they sure as hell wont get any help from the U.S.A. after David Lange spat in their faces. Amazing how quickly Kiwi Progressives forgot where their entire Air Force came from during WW2.

Here in this clip you get NZ most disloyal MP Actor Heather Roy. Three times the list member, attracted 200 constituency votes in Wellington and Timaru electorates. Of course many of the greatest Thatcher ministers, eg Hailsham and Carrington were House of Lords aristocrats and not a single member of the public voted for them. It is also true that Thatcher and other great Tory ministers were selected on rigged ballots, and could only have been elected in the richest past London conservative seats. I don't claim I would have got more public votes than Roy and if she was unknown in a lot of places she could have won seats as a Labour backbencher. No one was less a friend of the RNZAF strike force. I was told by her close friends, that the local communists in SC rioted with joy when Heather was elected, they thought they had conned them. I also remember talking to Stuart Boag ( later Minister of Defence, Wayne Mapps speech writer and a century earlier, Minister of Education Nick Smith's advisor) long ago in SC, he told me he was well to the right of English/Smith and an admirer of old No 2 in the Legion Sid Holland and s somewhat right wing NZ PM for a few months in 51 and for as long as Earl Monuntbatten kept the blowtorch on in 1956 ( Boag and Mountbatten are figures for well known for proving two days later they were as the exact opposite latitude and longitude. I of course understand precisely why Michelle Boag, rated him No 60. I am of course totally loyal to friends as the Knox generals, know. Stuart Boag told me Defence was the one thing in Government, that hadn't yet been reformed. Well actually I and the RNZN ,certaintly didn't grasp that meant, the RNZN officer class smashed, officer, pay rates frozen for years, fuel allowance for the frigates cut. No revival for the A-4s or Aermachis , as few sold just in time. Of course the Aermacchis were still being flown, to keep the systems going and possibility of reviving a jet training Squadron. Yes, Billy Boy said National had never promised. But the Act Actor. So judge Heather and Mr Stuart Boag, utter misleaders. And of course considering, my massive talent and legend, it is outrageous that people like Oldfield, Boag and Heather ever held high office. And a catastrophe for the nation despite the huge difference, between them. .
