In this video, I’m going to take you through the steps I use to create a nice natural edge to a flowerbed. This is something that a lot of people want to incorporate as a feature in their garden and can be a really attractive feature as long as you follow some key principles.
➡️ You’ll be able to watch along as I use these five principles on a garden that I’m working on. You’ll see as I create a plan for what I want the area to look like, make a cut guideline for the edge, cut the outline, remove material from inside, and then finally tidy up and define the edge and form a trench.
If you follow these steps then you’ll be able to create an appealing natural edge to a flowerbed and have this really nice feature in your own garden. Hopefully, by watching me do it here, you’ll feel more confident attempting it yourself.
➡️ This is just one of the many videos I create on gardening techniques so be sure to watch the others.

There is something very rewarding about doing something like this for yourself. Sure, you could have paid someone to do that while sitting on your couch but you will appreciate it 100 times more knowing you put the time and effort into it. Well done.

Next time you do it since you said it’s your first time. I noticed when I did it that wetting the grass & using the edging tool gives a sharp clean cut edge. But I edged it slowly & rocked the edging tool from left to right slightly pushing towards the grass then I pulled the edging tool up but I didn’t completely take it out of the ground as I went down the line making my cut. And it turned out samurai sword sharp. Oh & I waited until the edge was dry before I put my dirt in. It turned out so neat looked very professional I shocked myself. lol

Such BRUTAL PAINSTAKING work man, good job! I just did a 30’ x 5’ bed on the side of my house and it literally took me about 6-8 hours just to rip all the grass up. Would of loved to have rented a sod cutter but my electric & cable run shallow right there along with a couple ground rods (which I hit twice). It all pays off in the end!

@@TheNeighborDominator I would look for a nice quality mulch … ultra fine, to lay on top of the garden soil. Typically dark black or brown … your choice. Helps to retain moisture and choke out weeds. I have not tried the zinnia mix before, but individual plants and/or shrubs depending on how much sun/shade they see. You did it the proper way with a spade edge … just maintain it now with your trimmer. Cutting beds is tough work.
