One of the strangest private records you will come across; this is a recorded invitation to a costume party from 1916.
Having these invitations made would have cost over $100 in 1916 cash, which translates to over $3000 today.
The party was being thrown by businessman Sidney Berney at the Belvedere in Baltimore. The theme was Middle Eastern/Asian/Eastern European and required the attendees to dress as someone from one of the countries mentioned on the recording.

I discovered your channel recently and I'm loving it I think it would be nice if you do a video about what you know about foreign records. Like, here in Brazil, the 78's have lasted until 1964 but there was countries that lasted longer like India and Argentina and this type of information

Welcome aboard! Unfortunately I have a very limited knowledge base in regard to the post-war 78's from international sources. I probably only have a half dozen in my collection. If I come across a stash somewhere, I will read up and get something posted.

This is not unlike what rich techies will do today when some new gizmo comes out. Make some deliberately expensive electronic gizmo just for some mundane invitation or party gift to flaunt how rich they are. "People never change, only time does."

Very cool. I've seen a few Columbia personal records, mostly guys singing hymns badly. This is a real prize. (Have you ever heard the Columbia personal record that Al Jolson made for Ruby Keeler? You'll feel sorry for her if you ever do).

There ARE a lot of badly performed hymns on these records : ) I only know of one collector that has the Jolson disc, and while they sent me a transfer to listen to, I don't think I have ever actually seen a physical copy of the disc.

You mention you discuss radio transcripts. I recently got over 150 radio transcript orthacoustic records and 8 V-disc records. I have done some basic research on these but have no idea of their value.

The value of both is heavily dependent on the content. There are some really good Orthacoustic transcriptions and some that are pretty ho-hum. Same thing with V-discs. Most V-discs sell in the 5-10 range, if they are in decent condition. I sold a stack of worn V-discs for $1 each recently and not all of them sold; (the classical didn't) but as always there are some that are worth much more. The radio transcriptions are also quite varied with most going in the 10-15 range, but again, there are some that are more and some less. Programs that contain material that wasn't available to the public on 78rpm discs is more desirable and anything that is baseball related belongs in my baseball transcription collection : ) Another broad generalization for radio transcriptions is the closer they are to 1930 the better. Anything before 1930 is almost certainly rare.

Lovely stuff! It is regrettable that there isn't a good source or discography for Columbia personal recordings, even if it would be nearly impossible to create an exhaustive list of everything that once existed. This one is a real gem, how unique! Thanks for sharing!

Very interesting! Almost sounds like Harry Spencer, who did a lot of spoken-word recordings for Columbia in the 1900s, though he stopped recording around 1910. This probably isn't him, but if it was an official Columbia recording, he'd be the most likely recording artist.
