Recently unearthed this odd promotional 78 rpm record from 1949 that features songs released by two different labels on the the same disc.

While I’m not too interested in later records, radio related ones like these (promos) and transcriptions (acetates, instantaneous etc.) are fascinating. Do you have an estimate of the amount of records in your collection?

Decca group Split Label Promos were quite common in the UK (I know US Decca had financially split from UK Decca but they still had a thought process plus UK Decca stuff if it didnt appear on London would appear on US Brunswick. US Decca would appear on UK Brunswick and sometimes Coral / Vogue Coral and US Coral on UK Coral). The only difference here is the promo being the same song. The split label promos appeared to be confusing for DJs so in the UK Decca went to single sided promos , often sent out in pairs to DJs so they could cue up the A side flip they were promoting.

Thanks for that information! As a former disc jockey (that actually used discs mixed in with the open reel music library) I can see why having split sides would be confusing/annoying for DJ's. I learned something!

Wouldn’t that ad be by the music publisher, not a record distributor? Anyway, another informative, fascinating video. I look forward to each new installment.

Reminds me of another odd label thing - that Edison Needle type pressing with a Brunswick label. Did I imagine it?

Only my best guess, but Edison needle cut discs could have been processed by Brunswick. Record companies often used whatever method was most convenient to get material to dealers on schedule.

I wish I could find the scan now, but if I have it right, it was a Needle Cut side on an Edison pressing, but the Brunswick label. Could it have been an approach by Edison to do a deal with Brunswick? @@spacemissing

I hope you didn't imagine it. That would be a fascinating and amazing disc, and it would doubtlessly have an interesting story behind it. Let us know if you find it.

@@MarkAtnip Brunswick always had an interesting set of relationships , including going broke and I think changing the method of cutting discs, (Discogs might have summary that was probably carried in Billboard or other contemporary trade press )

Strange. I can’t say that I’ve run into any of those. Interesting find.

I know this is probably off topic, but do you know why record companies today simply don't seem to care about reissuing 78rpm masters/tests/alternate takes (that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world)

I presume that it is a combination of a few things. 1) lack of access to the original masters/stampers. For the most part, only the original companies have access to these, and of course, most of that material is under the roof of a few huge companies that have very little interest in reissuing 78's. 2) even if they DID want to re-issue them, they would be at the bottom of the priority list as compared to making sure there are an additional 4bijillion repressings of Fleetwood Mac available. 3) if they WERE at the top of the priority list, there is apparently a 9 month backlog for having pressings produced, and by the time they get around to it, Taylor Swift will have another album out so it will be bumped down the list. If anyone is going to repress 78's, my presumption is that it would be Third Man, but my guess is that their backlog is just as crowded as every other pressing plant and they put out SO much LP content, if they decided to produce a 78 as of right now, it wouldn't be available until late 2024 .

What 78rpm promo's exist that were made after 1960?
@MarkAtnip

In the United States? Pretty much zero. I don't know of any promos that were made after 1960. Everything was on 45rpm by that point. Anything on 78prm after 1958 is going to be very difficult to find. There were a few 78s made after 1959, however I don't know of any promo discs for them.
