We're back, nerds! The journey to playing all the old school D&D games continues, with this week's episode on Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator. I had no idea there was a Dungeons and Dragons-based real time strategy game until recently. How does it hold up? About the same as any of the 90s D&D games.

You can move characters to attack the enemies. Here is how: First, set some people you are not using for building to ready from each characters army. Unassigned can work as well, but setting them to ready guarantees, that they follow orders. Then, go to the map view and click on a screen near the enemies - but not where an actual enemy is, choose a screen at least 3 screens away. This will be the screen where we rally the party and we do not want to fight until we have superior numbers. Next, you might have noticed that there is a triangle with a line underneath for each character. The triangle is also important, but mainly for realm management, so I will not talk about that, but the line below is used to move unassigned / ready units around. The way it works is that you select a screen where you want to attract units to by clicking on the line and setting how many units should move there. Each main character has its own army and own line, so if you want an army of varied classes, then set each line to attract them to the "rally screen". To explain how the line works, here is an example: lets say you have 6 fighters set to ready and you move to a screen and click the line at its halfway point. The first half of the line will turn red and 3 of the 6 fighters will begin advancing to that position. Traveling takes time, so that is why I recommended to set the rally screen at least 3 screens away from the enemy, because they can advance toward you as well. Finally once you have the numbers and a varied party (preferably fighters, clerics, mages) then select a screen with an enemy (or if you have enough people you can select their keep) and start moving your army by setting the lines to max there and removing the line from the rally location. Then the characters will begin moving towards the enemy in great numbers fighting every hostile monster on the way. So basically you attract your ready / unassigned characters to a screen and watch the auto combat.

So in the original "Dungeons and Dragons Basic Set" dwarves, elves, and halflings were all treated as classes rather than races. Halflings were fighter-thieves that could hide in heavy armor and backstab people. Elves were fighter-wizards that could wear heavy armor, use swords and spears, and cast spells. Dwarves were basically just fighters with some resists and saving throw bonuses (immune to poison). All of them were treated kind of like multi-classing characters and the XP costs to level up were significantly higher than a normal character. A far conceptual gap from what we know of D&D now.

I had some memory about Elves being their own class in the early iterations. Makes sense that all non-humans were similarly designed. Thanks for the info!

@@Bancheis I was crazy in love with this game. I really don't understand why, but some games work like that on me. The games like: UFO Terror from the deep, Z, Lemmings, Syndicate, Lotus, I was just stuck to computer 24/7 playing those 😂

@@MartyLaBish So there definitely IS organized combat in this game. You have to select your leader, then click the bar under the triangle of orders. The bar fills to show how many units you are trying to "attract" to the location. It will pull from Ready units first, then Unassigned units after. You can navigate to any tile on the map then attract your units to the tile. A key strategy is to attract your units to the west or east of an enemy stronghold, make sure they are all ready, then move them into the enemy tile. Combat will happen whether you are watching the tile or not. You can build a party and have units from each leader pile into the tiles. For your first playthrough, I would advise to stick to 1 party member at first to learn the game. Each party member has to manage their own gold and their own city/village. Gold caps out if you don't build vaults. Food runs out in the winter time if you don't have granaries or food storage. Units level up by fighting and clearing enemy strongholds. Building degrade if you don't have a unit on the tile, so best to have a "Home" unit on each tile. Early game is best to focus on food and housing to grow your city. Some classes have bonuses to certain buildings, like elves gather more food from trees than the others. Dedicate a tile to Training and have Ready and Unassigned units idle there. Also to note, those Training/Building/Recruiting triangles are individually set for each tile, so you can get very granular with your configuration. The reason there is no tutorial is because this was from the era when games came with a manual. Even then, some of it was left to discover on your own. Happy to provide guidance if you wanted to play this more.
