I see what you tried to do. But rollback is more like the sewing on a nice dress. What's the point of a nice dress if the moment you go out in it the seams come undone. You wanna party with your friends but you can't because your dress only looks nice and falls apart when worn.

You wanna go out with your friends (play online) but your dress tore when putting it on (bad connection) Rollback isn't extra. It's the Expected Quality required to play the game properly. If you buy a dress you expect to, at the very least, be able to wear it. If I buy a brand new car I don't consider a working engine to be an extra feature. Daisuke's idea of making all songs be a "Yelling what's going inside my head" as Metal tracks was kinda genius... Like Faust's swirl of grief, madness and self-hate, or Zato's inner thoughts being drowned by Eddie's parts, to sometimes rise up as a slow and dramatic power ballad...

Something to add about the music, which i think is bloody awesome. Most of the themes have radical shifts in them, where the beat or even the style changes. Millia's theme goes all quiet, Zato becomes a fucking Queen song, so on and so on. But that shifts always happen way too far into the song to be heard during a normal fight. There is only one context, apart from listening to the soundtrack on KZfaq, where you will hear that part of the themes. The training room. As you mechanically learn your character, you also learn something about them, because you discover a part of their story you wouldn't experience in normal gameplay. Daisuke is a fucking genius

its not really that they're getting snubbed, these games are just genuinely bad at breaking into the western market. whenever someone talks about Strives sales being good its also sadly with the caveat of "for a GG game" outside of visuals and gameplay, GG has always been really bad at marketing their game, not to mention showing its features. most people don't even know Strive has a full strory mode. not only this but stuff like the lobby system has done alot of damage for its online presence since most western players are both not used to that kind of system and don't really like it.

Quick thought, a different interpretation: Necessary discrepancy could also be seen as a dialogue between the universal will and ramlethal's rebellion with AISHA singing the role of the will and Naoki singing the role of ramlethal, since the lyrics sung by each are somewhat at odds. I'm sad that almost no one (not even you) talk about the background stages. It's basically like taking the background stages of UMvC3, SF4 or even CvS1 (fighting games that all had amazing stages) but turning them into masterpieces. I'm an ongoing engineer and every time I see the mechanical whale stage I'm mesmerized on how natural the movements of each fish looks like while still giving the illusion that there's only metal that moves mechanically. It doesn't even stop there, you can clearly see that the whale itself is basically a blimp, transporting people through the air and the fact that most of them even have certain body expressions, while only being a few pixels big, makes you realize how dedicated the art team for this game were and makes you appreciate the game even more.

because Strive's stages are all uninspired garbage. Characters blend in, the visuals are split across three or four "segments" you have to wall break to get to, and they drift even further away from the heavy metal aesthetic that the pre-Xrd games were actually inspired by and oozing with. You could take almost any background from XX and it'd fit onto the cover of a Sepultura album or some shit. I can't say the same for Xrd or Strive unless we switch the genre to a fucking k-pop band

A lot of people came to the conclusion that Strive's character theme songs were basically "What if this character was the boss of the game". I like to think that this is the theme for the entire characterization of the roster of Guilty Gear. Every character is elevated by the songs, sound design and animations and, because of them, every character exudes their personality, as well as an intense sense of power and danger that they weren't able to do before. The example I like to give the most in this regard is Millia. Before, she mostly looked like a waifu with a cocky personality and play doh hair. Now, her very intro animation for every fight conveys her role as an assassin by giving her an air of menace and focus, accompanied by a more grounded outfit and well-kept appearance which highlight her competence, and finally her internal struggle with her experiences as an assassin, as well as her uneasy relationship with Angra, are brought forth by Love the Subhuman Self. As a whole, the characters in Strive overflow with personality and depth in a way that they just couldn't before, and I think that is an amazing feat for a game in which every character was already made with a certain personality in mind

When you get really embedded in the community, it’s easy to forget that fighting games are more than the mechanics that influence how you play them. After the novelty of the visuals and the soundtrack wore off, I found myself getting more and more dissatisfied with the gameplay, which caused me to stop appreciating the things that drew me to the game in the first place: the extremely good visuals and spectating experience. Thank you for reminding me that while the game may not deliver the gameplay I’m looking for, that’s no reason to ignore all of the other areas the game succeeds in.

Potemkin's theme hits hard and I definitely feel Daisuke wanted it to. See, Potemkin has largely only ever been perceived as the big "unga bunga big damage" Grappler archetype. He owns that functionally speaking and looks the part. But more than half the cast, the big guy has more going on underneath the hood than he's given credit for. He is a man trying to do the right thing in a lawful manner, but slowly coming to terms with the fact that what is considered "Law" is not necessarily righteous. He has allowed himself to become weaponized by the governing bodies and is now questioning how much of what he has done is good and how much is bad. If he were a DND character, he would be a Lawful Good unsure if he has been led astray and misused; trying to do the right thing, but also having equal potential to have his sheer power used for the wrong things. And his theme captures all of that doubt and willingness to criticize himself. This isn't new either, this was a big thing in his arcade story for Xrd where his final fight had him going against a Dark Potemkin that represented a half to his personality he was scared to address. Potemkin IS a complex, well written character. Daisuke being the guy who wrote him, it must have been frustrating seeing him treated as less than that. So he made a track that doesn't just sing that inner turmoil, but scream it with equal parts anger and melody. It's a song that makes you see the beauty in finality but also the rage of struggling against whatever binds you. It puts you in the shoes of Potemkin and makes you feel, not even just understand but FEEL what it's like just living in this guy's shoes. And to that I have nothing but praise to sing. That takes genuine fucking talent.

Like how Skullgirls' OST is also a subtle nod to MVC2's jazzy, very free-flowing songs which, in a way, reflect the chaotic expression that both of these games, and these afro-american genres of music allow for. Soul Calibur's OST meanwhile reflects the rhythm of its own fights, as the characters circle each other, or dramatically push each other closer to the edge... I so rarely see anyone analyze Guilty Gear's music in terms of how it reflects its characters. Like there's people who break down its compositions, but nobody ever mentions how Sol's themes are always slow grooves to show that he's not really putting in any effort, or how Kliff's theme sounds bluesy because blues is a precursor of rock, or how Chipp's themes are fast and aggressive but also kind of melancholy to show that he's had it rough in the past but is still moving forward. When the music analysis started up I was like YES, FINALLY, SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS
@GoldenHue2 жыл бұрын
I mean.....No one's been talking about this because It's super self explandatory. There isn't much to talk about. If you take as little as 10 seconds to reflect on the character and his themes, and make sense of it, you kinda just....get it, y'know?
@AofCastle2 жыл бұрын
@@GoldenHue It's not always just 10 seconds for Ramlethal and Faust you need to hear the full theme because they're the character's full story arc. Love the Subhuman Self on the other hand, and as good as it is, is one of the themes that you can understand with 10 seconds

If you're looking for another example on how instrumentation can reflect a certain theme or character I look at Blaz Blue Cross tag battle. I got into Guilty Gear because of a shovelware GBA game that I had with the same title. The game was kind of bare with messy sprite work and it sounded kind of bad, but I was curious enough about the character designs to look further into it and try out Guilty Gear X. Prior to Guilty Gear, I was a casual Street Fighter and KOF player, but after playing Guilty Gear X for the first time, I was able to grasp the mechanics and was hooked by the character work, it becoming the first and only fighting game I ever 100%'d (story mode/all challenges/etc.). To see it continuing to evolve and see the creative design choices really makes me enjoy the game even though I am no longer into playing fighting games. I love that we finally get to hear your comprehensive perspective on a game that you hold up as a golden standard in so many of your "BAD ANIMATION" videos.

I had never thought of Leo's unga bunga playstyle the way you put it. I just took it as the reckless and wild nature of his offense is what got him through the war so its what he's gonna keep on doing until he falls. I especially love his cinematic super, with his eyes going pale as he does his huge war scream, almost like he's remembering in that moment that the last time he used that much strength behind an attack was when he was fighting for his life during the war.

I know, I know... I'm being THAT guy, but that's something I fucking LOVE about Them's Fightin' herds. As you say here, music is INCREDIBLY important to fighting games and it's a big reason I cannot really jive with NRS games or Marvel Vs. Capcom infinite. TFH takes the concept of wanting to drive their characters forward with their musical themes to the next level. The characters have their own instrument sets that infuse themselves into everything and anything to do with the action. technically, the character select screen is just a little bass guitar ditty until you start hovering over characters, wherein their instruments will kick in depending on if that character is being played by player 1 or player 2. these instruments also apply themselves when you start gaining momentum in a match, replacing the normal melody with genre-bending arrangements of each stage theme. When you are stuck in Arizona's horrible cow blender of doom (seriously, her high-low mix is NUTTY), music will suddenly get a galloping syncopation to it while cowbell and deep acoustic guitars start strumming like it's a spaghetti western. Oleander manages to summon Fred and start syphoning all your super meter? expect to hear the music take on pipe organs and Harpsichord with a more rigid structure to them. Shanty the Pirate Goat brings steel drums and a quartet of horns to compliment the patois of her win quotes, while Paprika the Pepe le Pew-esque alpaca with the snuggles turns the music into this sugary synthpop nightmare as she command grabs and kisses you for a third reset. It's an INSANE undertaking, and every time a stage or a character gets added to the game, it makes the soundtrack exponentially explode with more variants to every track in the game. When the pirate goat DLC dropped, I legit had to take a good 2 hours to listen to all of the music that got added to the game between all the variants of her stage if the other characters are winning, her variants of all the previously existing stages, her Character Select theme, her story mode theme, the music they added for Oleander lobby and the credits they added to arcade... @_@ Them's Fightin' herds is an embarrassment of riches.

As a MASSIVE video game music enthusiast (I basically only listen to videogames OST) AND a lore nut, I cannot understate how bloody good Strive's OST is. I didn't think Daisuke could reach the level of +R's OST, but here we are. I especially adore the fact that he finally showcased the lore the characters have through music. Ram rising against The Universal Will and slowly finding her place in the world, Leo's suvivor guilt (which was only teased when you IK'ed him with Bedman and got lucky to pull the correct line in Xrd)... Heck. There's a lot of parallels between characters that got explored and explained in songs now. Millia and Pot are basically cursed to forever be soldiers and weapons of war. Millia's theme (in my opinion the first time Daisuke managed to nail a song about her, and HOLY SHIT he nailed it) is about her accepting her condition with a smile and making the best of it. Pot's theme showcases his rage at his condition, and the fact he fears he is technically still a slave. Not to Zepp (Gabriel is a bro), but to his own body. He's doing what he does cuz he's the only one that can. But he fears he can't enact a good change in the world because of his condition. He's still a fool, doing things that he can't understand, but he's determined to try and make some good changes in the world. P.S: I'm surprised your example from KI was Tusk, and not what I believe by far the best examples from that game: Aganos and Thunder.

It’s a series with brilliant gameplay such as tension and Roman Cancels, amazing characters like Sol Badguy and Baiken, astounding soundtracks with too many examples to list, and amazing visual aesthetics with different eras of anime and the diverse subgenres of metal being molded together to create what is Guilty Gear. Guilty gear Strive is the kind of game that just breaks my heart. I've been a massive GG fan for the longest time, and no matter how hard I try, I just can't bring myself to enjoy this game. And I want to enjoy it, because it's an amazing game! But there's something about the restrictiveness of the combo system that drains my excitement: a lack of space for improvisation. When I played Strive, I obviously went to the Training Mode first to get a feel for the characters and test stuff. And after having to accept that normals don't combo into each other anymore, I started finding combos - but it always felt to me like I was doing the same combos over and over again. It didn't feel exciting to explore a character's possibilities, it just felt like a quick trip without snacks. I don't need hundreds of specials, or millions of variations, I just want to be able to have some playing room. But all "creativity" in combo structures is now limited to the overhauled Roman Cancel, which is great, but doesn't change the rigidity of combo paths. And when it comes to changes, or rather, characters having been "gutted", there's only one character actually suffering from this. All the characters, as you said it, have been condensed into their most defining moves, the ones that shape their playing style. Except for Ramlethal. No more triple combos, no more sword placement, no more wild aerial prowess - nothing. The wild girl with cat-like traits and an alien curiosity for mankind, is now... confused. That's it. Well, and she's generally boring now. I don't hate what Arc System Works did with Strive, I just can't find anything fun for myself in it.
@kei75402 жыл бұрын
Bro Ram was always boring she is basically the same as she is in xrd minus her target combos which in now her rekka, I honestly don't even think the combos are anymore creative in the previous games you just press more buttons

I really disagree that only one character suffers from being gutted. I feel like my fingers have been cut off whenever I try playing characters I played often before, except for Potemkin. Am I the only one who thinks the combo counter looks cool? Like, it's always behind the action and the style is relatively simple (a basic font number with a basic font word on top of it), so it's not super obtrusive and doesn't distract much, and it only gets huge as your combos do (since, in strive, much shorter combos are meant to be the norm). It only gets huge when the combo does, which feels perfect. For a game with this aggressive use of hitstop and other visual flair to indicate "shit's going down!", the combo counter feels like a natural extension of that.

Nice review for a nice game. About the songs, the problem is we hardly will listen to different parts of them when playing. Even when playing a set, the music is restarted every new match. And indeed, the vocals felt even weirder than the first time we listen to them in xrd, but in few hours playing (and after unlocking themes from previous games, adding them to the mix) and all lyrics are cool and fun. We all have some preferences, but we agree this game can be appreciated for what it is.

The most complicated part about it are sidesteps and angled wall combos and that has MUCH less impact on the average player success than KoF's four different jump arcs. One of my favourite things about strive animations is how they switch from animating on 2s to 1s during supers. Reminder, this is a computer game, the animators could easily use interpolation to make every movement on 1s, but they deliberately don't, purely as a choice of design. Now, limiting your frame rate to simulate 2d animation is nothing new, plenty of animated tv shows do this (beastars, attack on Titan, dorohedoro) plenty of anime style games also do this (fire emblem echoes/three houses, ni no Kuni) but what makes strive special is that when the animation is played on 1s, they aren't using interpolation, they are hand crafting each individual frame, just like 2d drawn anime, so each frame has just as much artistry in 3d as it would if it were drawn in 2d. So closeup moments on ky's, ram's or zato's supers (just to name 3) have so much more impact and weight to their movements than typical fighting games that are already rendered in 60fps (btw as a quick side note, even during the extremely fluid moments of these supers, the animation is still playing at 24 fps, still less than half of most fighting games, it just seems so much more fluid because it happens less often) Okay, ramble over
