A jaded journalist (Matthew Rhys) reluctantly accepts an Esquire assignment to profile the children’s television host Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks), and encounters a profoundly empathetic world view that changes his life forever.
What is it about Tom Hanks? He's acclaimed for his stunning character transformations, from Big to Cast Away to Saving Private Ryan and beyond. But he's beloved because something about him always stays the same. Hanks' screen persona is an unerring force for good, which prompted a universal sigh of relief at his casting as America's treasured children's TV host, Mr. Rogers. But A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is no simple paean to childhood comforts. Following up on last year's sharp comic drama, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, director Marielle Heller sets Fred Rogers' irresistible charm against the immovable cynicism of a New York magazine writer.
Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) is assigned to write a profile of Rogers, whom he long ago dismissed as a sappy irrelevance. From their first encounter, he's forced to look closer. He's surprised to see Mr. Rogers on the set of his show, gently showing his young viewers how to deal with real-life challenges, conflict, and pain. "There's no normal life that is free from pain," Rogers says simply. And as Rogers observes Lloyd, he sees the pain inside this hardened, grown man who has shut himself off from a lifetime of unresolved conflicts with his father (Chris Cooper) and wife (Susan Kelechi Watson). As Lloyd shadows Rogers, the shallow profile he was planning turns out to be a momentous and meaningful encounter for both men.
Drawing on Tom Junod's Esquire article about his experience with Rogers, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood offers both real catharsis and the pleasure of a signature Tom Hanks performance. Technically perfect and imbued with the almost spiritual good that marks all his work, his Fred Rogers finds adult truths in the deep wisdom of childhood.

The always classy & elegant Matthew Rhys! Despite seeming just a little intimidated by the star power of Tom Hanks, he succeeds in giving smooth, enjoyable answers. He is always wonderful to watch, either on screen or in interviews. He is a gem!

Mr. Roger's played such an important part my and my sister's life, while my parents were struggling in their marriage and constantly bickering. He was such a kind man and how he allowed his puppets to create an understanding that children really understood. I wish there were more Mr. Roger's who could speak to adults, particularly in our current times. He is such an ICON!!!

I loved when Matthew Rhys shared the story that the "sound was the same" - Mr. Rogers or Tom Hanks. I think it's not because it's natural for Tom Hanks (as Ms Heller was saying), but for the sheer trust in the skill and talent of Tom Hanks to give it the effort and attention. We trusted him to be that raw and vulnerable. It was so beautiful to see the relationships evolve. I watched "Won't You Be My Neighbor" the night before we went to see this and it emphasized even more the man who worked hard to be this man. Well done ALL!

I read the Junod article when it came out and promptly went out and bought about 10 copies which I gave to people I loved for Christmas. I still have two faded copies. Then I read Tim Madigan’s “I’m Proud of YOU”. And bought about 10 copies which went to people I loved at Christmas several years later. I loved them both. Mr. Rogers kind of saved me in the early 90‘s when my youngest child had cancer and when she relapsed. We would watch Fred on the hospital tv and then watch all her favorites. They were far too sophisticated for her... „Philadelphia, Henry V., Ghostbusters, the X files, Watched em all about 500 times....Oh and Ken Burns Civil war saga... but Mr. Rogers... he was the one who saved me. Every single time I watched him explain something like crayons or friendship watched him talk to everyone with the same love and acceptance, something unwound in me... it allowed me to just be... even with the terrible pain and fear of watching my child suffer. My daughter is well. I am old. But still Mr. Rogers does the same thing to me if I should watch even part of an episode. Makes me feel loved and cared for in the bigger scheme of things. My great nephews went out as Mr. Rogers and Mr. McFeeley for Halloween... they are age 1 and 3 and Daniel Striped Tiger is the show they watch every single day. Sometimes I think St. Fred of the Neighborhood has given us a bit of gospel in his body of work. it is certainly what his very intentional life intended to do.

What I love is hearing this session and if that it is done in Toronto. I grew up with Mister Rogers and Mr Dressup. Here in Canada Mr Dressup was one of those shows that were spawned from Mr Rogers. Mr Dressup aka. Ernie Coombs was a puppeteer for Fred Rogers in the early days.

yup, I watched both Mr.Rogers and Mr.Dressup pretty religiously as a young child myself in the early 1980s ! I'm 41 and from Winnipeg. I liked both shows for different reasons. Mr.Rogers was the more "deep" psychological and emotional show whereas Mr.Dressup was the "hipper" arts/crafts and play-acting show (The tickle trunk). I used to always think Casey on Mr.Dressup looked like a younger version of Lady Elaine Fairchild on Mr.Rogers :-)

An amazing conflation of time and talent in watching Fred Rogers and Tom Hanks become an archetypal image of all that is good in the world. One hopes, in movies like this, that the lead actor becomes a little more like the principal s/he portrays. Thanks you, Tom Hanks! Thank you, Mr. Rogers!

I finally invested the time with absolute stringent requirements, Phone off, zero distractions, cuddled up with my best friend, Muppet, my 12 year old Shih Tzu... 😉 I was completely taken a back. My heart filled with the reminders that with all the discord going on in the world, on every channel, every day, what an incredible, almost two-hours to have shared. It left me feeling optimistic once again. It reminded me that, inherently, we are all good & are capable of so much more in the pursuit of just being better neighbors. Love & Light to you all out there in KZfaq Land and BeYoNd ! 😉 💜 🍀 👻 🎶

I disagree with what was said about Saints. Saints are true humans that have to work at it each day. It is the hard work, determination, and love in which they live each day. Saints throughout time have worked so hard in growing in the virtues that make them Saints. Sainthood here on earth is very hard and it cannot be thought of a person who is perfect and doesn’t struggle to be better each day. Love is the most important factor of becoming a Saint because if you do the simplest to the biggest thing without love it doesn’t have the same worth as if it had been done with love.

Fred Rogers brought the set to Pittsburg from a CBC studio not far from where this interview was taking place in Toronto in the 1960s. He and Ernie Coombs came to Toronto and two children’s shows were developed. Mr Roger’s Neighbourhood went back to Pittsburg and Mr. Dressup stayed in Toronto from 1967 to 1996.
