In this video I bring you guys along for a PS One repair. Unlike most of my previous videos, this recording is unscripted and gives you a peek into my game room and how I usually work on console repairs.
I hope that this helps set better expectations to beginners that are considering soldering and console repair as a hobby. Sometimes edited videos make it seem like repairs are always perfect, but even with a straightforward repair like this one there can be some unexpected hiccups or challenges along the way.

FYI, I’ve done several of these repairs. It’s really best to replace the neighboring capacitor, too - it’s responsible for the s-video signal. So composite works now, but there’s a good chance s-video is still bad.

Ex-Sony engineer here, nice to see someone still cares enough to keep these little consoles alive. The dull joint was caused by a mixture of two different types of solder initially. Wicking it off and re-soldering was the way to go. It all got a bit melted though when replacing the cap. Probably not a bad idea, (as other people have suggested), to replace the rest of the capacitors, to save them leaking at a later date, maybe with a fine soldering iron tip instead. Just a thought. 🙂

I like this format. I know it might not always be feasible or practical for you to use, depending on the video, but I think it is really cool and shows the things going on that are normally off camera, like setting up for the repair, that brings value to the overall finished video. And the blooper at the end.....HILARIOUS!

Lol. It's a bit of both. I don't like doing it but the CTR tends to improve a bit and exposes my content to new folks that are otherwise unfamiliar with my channel. It's what the kids are clicking on these days apparently. Go figure.

Ok, at first I was like. "No!, he's not doing clickbait thumbnails now is he?" You nailed it perfectly. The gaping mouth with the photoshopped enlarged eyes LOL. Honestly, I saw this on ebay as well and I was very tempted to buy this because I figured it was the capacitor. Now I'm glad I didn't otherwise you probably wouldn't have made this video. I'm not the biggest fan of the PSOne because it just feels cheap but when combined with the LCD screen it's a nice portable-ish system.

Haha its a small world of repair fiends scouring eBay for these consoles. I'm still on the lookout for an LCD attachment worth repairing. I passed on an aftermarket one (forget the manufacturer) because I'd love to own the Sony version.

Hey, you might know this already and/or this didn't happened before, but you should definitely wear safety goggles while applying heat to aluminum capacitors, they have a tendency to pop. I'm just here to avoid this scenario and continue your good work. Cheers.

Years ago when I was an apprentice I got “scolded” for using lithium grease on plastic. Not sure if you are using a special recipe however what I was using specifically said “lithium should not contact plastics or rubbers - will cause material degradation”. Probably doesn’t matter in the short term maybe even the long term however as soon as I saw you do that I had a flash of nostalgia 😂. I’m really enjoying your videos.

12:32 forgot to apply some kaptan tape to protect the rest of the circuit. The grey plastic part above seems to have melted a bit from the heat. Great work nevertheless!

Great job. You need to be careful around those electrolytic caps with high temperature though, you can boil the liquid electrolyte pretty easily with those hot air guns. The cap then turns into a dangerous projectile which could possibly hit your eye, if you're not wearing safety glasses. I think it's also probably better to change all the caps in that area which came into contact with the hot air gun at least. But as you probably know yourself, these things could really do with a full cap replacement to future proof them. But that's just being nit picky 🙂

Another great repair. I'm really enjoying watching you work. I only stumbled upon your channel a little while ago but so far I like what I see. That power connector solder joint issue reminds me of MANY I have had to do over the years and I find the early lead free solder just s*cks and cracks far too often. I have a 60+ year old 5lb spool of kester 50/50 rosin cored solder I use for just this sort of thing as it flows amazingly well and does such a great job fixing those lead free joints. It leaves a good amount of flex and never cracks. As far as epoxy goes I completely agree with you but I have also found something even better to use with plastics like this: automotive polyurethane panel bonding adhesive. Permatex sells a great 2-part one in the syringe just like you used here and it has superior bonding and strength. Comes in black, grey and tan so it tends to blend in very well for the near-invisible repair. So far I have not come across a plastic it won't bond other than polyethylene which really isn't going to be used for cases like this.

For gluing abs or abs/polycarbonate like that, try MEK and/or acetone. If you're working on a black plastic shell, ABS plumbing glue works pretty well (would work on other colors too, but you'll have a black spot where you applied the glue). If you look at the ingredients list, its acetone, MEK, and ABS resin. I just did that repairing the disc drive door hinge on a PS2 slim and it worked really well. The nice thing about that repair is it basically melts the parts together. So, the parts aren't glued together, they are fused. Repair should be about as strong as the original was.

Magic Eraser is also good as a stylus cleaner for your Record Styli as long as you ensure the stylus moves in and out of the eraser perfectly vertically. which means you would want to ensure you use the queuing control to do so.

Making this a behind-the-scenes repair doesn't made it any less interesting to watch. In fact, I've liked this style better because I could see more of the process and I don't mind longer videos. I really hope you will do similar videos in the future. The attention to detail is just amazing. (I know, I know, I always say this) In tight places such as the one where you removed the capacitor from, especially if there is plastic nearby, I usually just use two soldering irons, heat the two sides and lift it of. I guess I'm too afraid that the capacitors might explode from direct heat :) Some humour slipped in when you drinked redbull while you were waiting for the hot air to heat up...maybe you could heat up some tea with it next time to make it funnier :D

I've got that same sony bravia. I've had it since 2009 and it's been a great tv. I had to update the firmware for the ps4 though. Prior to doing this it displayed super pixilated.

Yes that capacitor is the primary reason for bad video or no video on this model. Very common issue if the system is otherwise working.

I got one of these with the screen attachment a couple of years ago in Really good shape. I honestly can't really tell if it had ever been used. I got pretty lucky and snapped it up at a decent price.

All my consoles apart from my PS4 and PS5 are from eBay as faulty and I repair them. It is much more satisfying and cheaper than just buying a good used system.

I agree completely, not to mention the additional maintenance you can perform along the way like cleaning inside and out, new thermal paste where applicable, clean and grease fans and optical drive gears if needed, etc. so your "repaired" system ends up being in better shape than a comparable working "used" system.

@@BorderlineOCD yes exactly! Even if I bought a good used console I would still want to open it for maintenance anyways so it makes a lot of sense to save a lot of money on the faulty ones and just repair them while doing the general maintenance.

You should be careful about heating the capacitor's because they can explode by excessive heating but it looks like you really took good care of heating the neighbouring components 😅 so... Glad you enjoyed it! Hot air is certainly its own set of skills which needs practice. I actually noticed during editing that some of the plastic connector began to discolor above the capacitor area so in hindsight some kapton tape would have helped.

(sorry for the Mistakes in my writing) Hi I am who was complaining about your thumbnails In the past, I apologize if you didn't like that, I just like your vedios that's it and I found them really helpful like the old psone repair vedios which I run into the same problems also the ps2 and ps3 vedios that I olso did came across ylod pal unit like yours and it did work but later in the same day I put the caps in reverse which killed the Cpu and gpu giving me ylod again And for your new way i suggest to mix it whith your editing And that's it Keep going

Depends who you ask :) Technically there were smaller revisions of the NES and Genesis too, similarly made more cheaply later in the consoles lifecycle.

I'd consider ordering a preprogrammed PsNee but I'm not into the whole program-it-yourself version.
