Not a new sailor (USN) but new to sailing... I plan to model this on my boat!

Your setup is excellent. It makes me cringe every time I see jack lines run up the side decks, and not the middle of the boat. If you use the side deck method, and go over, you better pray someone on board sees you go. If you single hand and that happens, you are as good as dead. The center line method keeps you from getting outside the lifelines in the first place. Excellent video.

IMO the harness is to long but the again perhaps the video gives that impression

Is not the harness too long allowing the person to go over the handrails?

No, we tested that full details here, but it does require membership at $36/year: www.morganscloud.com/2016/11/11/banishing-sidedeck-jacklines-forever/ Full online book here: www.morganscloud.com/category/safety/book-person-overboard/

Would it be correct to say that even with this setup, you can fall outside the lifelines? If so, maybe you would not fall too far down outside the lifelines, so that you (if strong enough) could lift yourself up..

We have a whole online book that goes with this video, including measurements and geometry. Short version: Except at the very bow, with this system only my legs would be outside the lifelines, and then only if they broke. More here: www.morganscloud.com/series/staying-aboard/

From this video it looks like the tether leading to the cockpit is quite long and would allow you fall over the lifelines at that point.

Hi Jim, Probably a result of the very wide lens on the video camera. Even if the lifelines broke only my legs would be over the side. All of that is in our online book with measurements and photos: www.morganscloud.com/series/staying-aboard/ That does require membership: www.morganscloud.com

Would not be so easy if the boat was heeling in a 2 metre wave sisuation
@Morganscloud6 жыл бұрын
Nothing is so easy in that situation. That said, it makes no difference to the benefit of this system. We have used the system in very heavy weather, just not practical to video.
