A better way to PROTECT your cast iron tools?

Taking care of your cast iron surfaces doesn't have to be hard. In this video I show you step-by-step how I clean and protect all my tool surfaces. This method can be used on your jointer, table saw, or planer. It doesn't even have to be cast iron. This will help prevent rust and give you an ultra smooth surface for your material to ride along. Awesome Tip and you might already know about this stuff but its great for the frictionless feel like you mentioned. It's the Bostik 10220 Aerosol Top-Cote. It seems to be a similar like product. I have been meaning to try the boeshield t-9 for awhile now. So we will see how it goes.

This is, I believe, the perfect solution. Most of my woodworking tools were purchased used and needed some rust remediation. Once the surfaces were clean they got the same treatment that you describe. I live just a few miles off of Galveston Bay in subtropical heat and humidity and am surrounded by bayous and other sources of humidity. I let the Boeshield dry overnight and wipe the surface down with paper towels. Then I let it dry for 24 hours before applying paste wax. I have never been a fan of microfiber anything, preferring old real cotton towels to buff the paste wax. The only rust I've had on a woodworking tool was when a friend set a soft drink on my table saw. I told him that was a felony. It only stained a little and cleaned up pretty easily. Without the Boeshield/JPW treatment I have no doubt it would have been much worse. My Johnson's Paste Wax is about half gone so it is only used for cast iron woodworking tools.

Ive never used this stuff before. What do you think about putting it on leaf springs on a car? I'm restoring one and my new leafs are starting to rust a little bit. Would this stuff attract and hold dirt and dust?

Boeshield T-9 $21.00 per can (don't know how long it lasts), Paste Wax (hard to get the johnson now) $16 and will pretty much last forever. Boeshield would need to be SIGNIFICANTLY better to make it worth the extra cost.

I've used a can of this, and have repeatedly tried to reduce friction, with no luck. It sticks like crazy. I use Bostik, and wood glides like crazy. I'll never use T9 again.

Anybody heard of a good replacement for SC Johnson paste wax? Heard they discontinued it.

Have a look at your local Ace Hardware store mine here Seattle still has it. Renaissance is good but it's expensive If you are trying to cover a large area the Johnson's wax works real good for me also

I’m curious how you know T9 gives superior rust protection vs paste wax?

In order to compare the two, I would have to apply only the T9 or only the paste wax. In this scenario, I applied the T9 and put a coat of paste wax on top of it. So I can’t really give you a protection comparison. But I can tell you that the application of both had done great 👌

I saw an interesting video on Fireball Tool’s channel (a metalworking KZfaqr) who did some side-by-side empirical testing and found that buffed out paste wax actually gave superior rust protection to the T9. Of course those test results could turn out differently in different testing environments and although I’ve used both products I also haven’t done a controlled comparison myself. Either way it’s good to know that the two products are compatible for layering and I like how your approach covers all the bases! (Some day I’d like to get a cordless buffer/polisher to REALLY get that wax in there and sliding smooth!)

Just use Evaporust to remove the rust. No rubbing. Then get it copper plated then Nickel electroplated. It will never rust again.

How much does it cost to send a planer to be copper plated? .....it's most likely, not local, so I'd assume there are shipping costs? I'm just curious about the costs...... ...roughly, not exactly.

Best to contact your nearest electroplating company for a quote. They typically charge by surface area and surface condition. Take some pictures with a ruler in the photos and email them to companies. I did my table saw top, 27"x 30" cost me $400.00. My player was local, so I didn't have shipping charges. Turned out slick as glass.

Yeah, that’s a big no-no. But for some reason, cast iron surfaces attract cold beverages 🤦🏻‍♂️

Boeshield always leaves a sticky surface. Not really sure why you're using PB Blaster and then wiping it off with DNA; seems to cancel each other out and spraying it on thick is just spraying money on your tools and then wiping it off and throwing it away. Clean the metal, coat with paste wax and you're done. The rest would be best for people who mostly clean and worship their tools and do little building.
