oh i'm currently reading notre-dame de paris! so far i really love how it talks about architecture and the connection between quasimodo and the notre-dame (which, at the time that victor hugo was writing the book, was a deeply scarred and mutilated building--the novel actually inspired a restoration of the cathedral)

Omg! I just spotted Lud-in-mist on a list of most beautifully and intrinsically written fantasy books ever list a few weeks back. And I was shook. Like, even LOTR was on the special add on mentions down on the footnotes of this list. And this book was in the top three or something. I just didn’t double think and got it. But then I got a little scared if it would be out of my understanding scope😂 Now that you’ve got it I am so so happy!!! Yayy! The old Rilke editions are so cool! The old German font is kind of difficult to read, it actually says "Das Stunden Buch" (Book of Hours), so the first letter is supposed to be a weird looking S instead of G ;)

I really enjoyed Lud-In-The-Mist! The exploration of separating the fae from the human and how damaging that is was really cool, and it's just such an interesting little read. I feel like once you've read it you can really see its influence on later authors writing fae fantasy.

Victor Hugo is one of my all time favorites, and The Hunchback is the best of the best. I still giggle at the thought of Gringoire and the goat, and the writing is so evocative and gorgeous. I also love a short story he wrote called The Last Days of A Condemned Man, which shows how the death penalty is state sanctioned torture.

Since you said you need more fun books you should totally read The Raven Cycle. It's the absolute perfect balance of plot and character in my opinion. There are some darker themes and topics sprinkled throughout but overall The Raven Cycle is just so fucking fun to read.

Lud-in-the-Mist is one of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, which are now collectible. They all had spectacular wrap-around covers, and re-introduced many wonderful if forgotten epic fantasy novels to readers eager for more after Tolkien was re-discovered in the late 1960s, early 1970s. The Origins of Satan by Elaine Pagels may interest you, she's a premiere scholar on these matters. Hitchens was a bit strident, but raised good points. The Name of the Rose introduced me to Eco's work, and I'd also recommend Foucault's Pendulum if you like TNOTR. Layered stuff, scholarly and playful. He's a semiologist so he tends to like symbols and signifiers.

Lud-In-The-Mist is strange and wonderful. Hope Mirlees also wrote on of the great long modernist poems, Paris which I love. Once you've read it I recommend Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend-Warner.

Yes! Lud-In-The-Mist!!! It deserves so much more recognition. I read it on a recommendation because I liked Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and it was so good!. It is an older book, so the language is slightly harder to click in to, but once you do, it's very rewarding. Also, the pacing is slow, but worth sticking with.

Hume's two greatest philosophical works were "A Treatise on Human Nature" and the "Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding". He wrote the "Treatise" first but it was too radical for the intellectual community of his time and was not widely read. So then he wrote the "Enquiry" which is a shorter and more accessible account of what he wanted to say in the "Treatise". Most philosophers would agree (I think?) that the Treatise is the more systematic book while the Enquiry is the best starting point for Hume's philosophy. But Hume is a very clear writer so you could start with any of his books or essays and be completely fine imo. Also, reading Hugo has been on my to do list forever but I keep trying and failing. Excited to see how you make out!

Yay, someone else who appreciates David Hume! His thoughts on government and on beauty are really profound and ahead of his time. Loved Hunchback but liked Les Miserables even better. New to the channel but loving it so far!

i studied philosophy and lit in the uk - no bible, but we did do descartes and hume! definitely start with descartes, his meditations are such a good way in: fun voice/narrator + introduction to some of the cornerstones of western philosophy ~

My reading Bible is the Oxford, and what I do is: After reading one of the books I read the included history/commentary. In general, I find it difficult to read them otherwise. Thx Em! btw I'm a huge Buffy fan too

If you want to get back into Italian you should read in other words by jhumpa lahiri if you havent already. Its dual translation and lahiri writes about her experience studying italian as a second language. I dont study italian but as a fan if learning languages i found it rly insightful!

I love your videos! I would really love to hear about your take on the dark artifices by Cassandra Clare. It’s a Shadowhunters series, but I feel like people who have read the mortal instruments and the infernal devices (predecessors of TDA) didn’t read TDA because they didn’t like TMI and TID. And I feel so bad because the dark artifices is honestly SUCH a good series.

A good follow up for Descartes would be his correspondence with Elisabeth of Bohemia (their letters are published in a pretty accessible book). Elisabeth wrote to Descartes and challenged him on his work and pointed out some of the issues with his work and especially his dualism. Elisabeth is one of the very wonderful female philosophers whose contributions to philosophy are underappreciated, so from both a history of philosophy and from a philosophical perspective their correspondence is really interesting. Hume's moral philosophy is really interesting. You might want to start with that. His account of moral judgement is based on empathy (sympathy is his term, but it means the same thing as empathy does now), and he is one of the first philosophers who really think about the role of empathy in the moral life. A Treatise of Human Nature would be the book to go to if you are interested in that (especially book 3). For Philosophy you should also try Iliad Poem of Force by Simone Weil. Simone Weil pretty heavily influenced Anne Carson, so she's worth looking into if you like Anne Carson. Poem of Force is both an interpretation of Homer and an opportunity for Weil to write about her own thoughts on war and violence and how it shapes the psychology of everyone involved. Weil is a wonderful philosopher who lived during the early 20th century and died part way through WW2. She thought a lot about caring for others and about how violence, affliction, and pain shape our perceptions and behaviours.

I've read the first chapter during my studies almost 10 years ago and didn't have more time for it then. Are those Giacomo Leopardi's Canti? If so, DO NOT take them as a way to practice your italian or as a reference to where your knowledge of italian is! He writes in a very aulic, 19th century italian, which is not easy to decifer even as an italian university student (yes it comes from experience lol). This being said, he's one of my favourite italian authors (and one of the most important) his poetry and themes are extremely beautiful, so I hope you will enjoy it!! P.S. your videos are always top tier ✨
