The "no oil on the lock face" advise is interesting. I came into knife collecting from the firearm collecting world and there, it's always recommended to lube all metal on metal contact surfaces (such the contact points on an AR-15 trigger and disconnector). So, when I started collecting knives, I followed this advise there as well, lubing the lock faces in addition to the detents, stop pins, etc. Never had a liner or frame lock slip on me. Then again, if a new knife doesn't have a lockup geometry that looks confident, it goes back to the store.

You never want lubrication on the part of the knife designed to lock the blade out. This part is SUPPOSED to stay where it is. This is a fact.

@@metal_complex I wasn't really arguing that you should. Just noting the differences in recommendations. Though the same logic (to not lubricate) could be applied to the AR-15 trigger hook and hammer. The hook MUST hold the spring tensioned hammer back until you pull the trigger. If it ever slips, you have a potentially deadly malfunction/negligent discharge. Yet, all trigger manufacturers, including premium ones like Geissele, LaRue, and RRA explicitly instruct to you put small drops of oil on these contact surfaces in order to minimize friction and wear. What they really don't want you to do, is try to polish or reprofile these surfaces, though some people get obsessed with getting the cleanest trigger break, still do it. Reprofiling is particularly bad, because it destroys the trigger's case hardening.

Alright. You don't want lube on the lock face. This an absolute fact echoed by the most prestigious knife makers. The surface of the lock should be dry.

@@metal_complex I'll keep that in mind and try not to get oil on them. :) By the way, have you ever seen or heard of a lock face rusting on a non-stainless blade? It always kind of bugs me that the lock faces are kept "in the white" and it's another reason why I've been instinctively putting oil on them. Seems like rusting could be an issue in some humid coastal climates.

If you think $280 is too much for any knife. But for those materials it’s a good and competitive price. Currently sub $200 is my cutoff point.
