Check out Ryan Holiday's books, he said he read meditations 100 times over the years and distills stoic philosophy into something easily digestible. "The Obstacle is the Way" and "Ego is the Enemy" are two of his books, he also helped research a book called "Mastery" which outlines how masters (Di Vinci, Mozart) have different strategies to becoming great.

Try reading HitchHikers' Guide to The Galaxy sometime! Elon Musk has cited it as the book that changed his outlook on life. I am currently reading it, and it has been absolutely fantastic so far, though admittedly, not mind-blowing for me. Would love to hear your thoughts about the book

I read "Man's search for meaning" in two weeks after watching the movie "The Pianist", wrote a review and some notes for myself, spent some time reading about the Holocaust and will read it again next year. This book remains the greatest influence this year on me as it made me realise that in our hardest time, we humans can have such incredible strengths to overcome difficulties and succeed in finding the meaning of life. The book and its success in describing the pure acknowledgment of the reality in the camps urged me to talk about it, to write about it and to share it.

Hey John you should read The Dragon of Eden by Carl Sagan, it gets a little bit too technical in some chapters but it is very interesting, it shows you how most humans think they are superior to other animals but how much we resemble to them. It does a great job into bringing back awareness into realizing that we are actually animals just like any other specie, and its also cool to learn a little bit about the brain and evolution.

Love Man's Search for Meaning and Sapiens, so I'll have to check out Flow. You should also check out the Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom by Jonathan Haidt. It kind of follows a similar blueprint to finding happiness, but it's also fascinating as it examines the realm of ancient wisdom/mysticism in the context of modern neuroscience.

Hello John, that's really really interesting ! i've started the same challenge in january 18th, i've read already 23 books, and it is funny because i've read some of your books and learned the same things you describe ! "Flow" was last week and Outliers was this week ! How funny ! EVERYONE should try this challenge. Like you said, it's changing your life, you learn A LOT ! John, may i suggest some some books i think you might enjoy because you'll learn great things : "What doesn't kill us (Scott Carney)" "Teach like a pirate" (Dave Burgess), "Deep Work" (Cal Newport), "the 7 habits of highly effective people" (Stephen Covey). If you like memoirs, you might like "Total Recall" (Arnold Schwarzenegger), and as you like a bit of philosophy, i would suggest also "thoughts for myself" (Marc Aurelius, the roman emperor) Thank you for your list, i'll buy some more books now haha :D

Because of you, I read “Man’s search for meaning” over the past week; and it has significantly changed me. The suffering that those people went through is astronomical and makes all of my own struggles laughable. Because of this book, I go out into the world now and see just how fucking good I have it. The lessons in that book are truly incredible and emotionally impactful. After finishing this book, I feel so happy just to have the relationships and good health that I now don’t feel I deserve. I’ve always been inspired to help others around me feel better, but this just makes it that much easier for me to keep the right mindset going. I’ve already had a much easier time connecting with people and cheering them up wherever I go, and I owe it to this book, and of course you. Keep creating ripples man; from my personal experience, I know a video like this has the power to change infinite lives in the future! Thank you 🙏☺️

Since I saw John's first video about reading a book a week, I decided to try it out, read 8 so far, so this is how I did it (even though its not that much) read one book from a writer, if you like it, you will find other books from that author you'll like. I also took recommendations from other people, including influencers, friends, or people I talk to on IG haha. Audible and amazon(i think) give you recommendations after you read one book, so you'll find well rated books from the same category just by looking for one. I hope that helps :) I really recommend if you are into the IT and social media world, "hatching twitter".

Out of curiosity for someone who wants to read more how much time did you have to take out of tv (shows & movie watching) time to this far?

JLCodes Excellent question. I look to movies and TV for fiction, but books for non fiction subjects.

It’s individual to everyone but a good way to work out what yours is to pick up a book and read for an hour then count how many pages you’ve read. I think if I remember correctly that most people read around 50-70 pages an hour. So if you read at this speed and you’ve got a 300 page book to read it’s going to take you about 5-6 hours. How long you take to read will vary depending on your own reading speed, if you skim read, what books you’re reading, if you take notes... Also if you’re out of the habit of reading or don’t read often you might find yourself speeding up as you get into it. But doing this gives you a basic ball park to work in. Edit: I’d recommend anyone aiming to read more but who doesn’t read very much at the moment tries reading really widely at first. Get Goodreads, look for things that catch your eye on it, make an Amazon wish list, get recommendations from friends. Try not just non-fiction and fiction but history, biography, autobiography, science books, self improvement, historical fiction, graphic novels, sci-fi, fantasy, classics, YA... that way you have an idea of what your reading is for. Do you want to challenge yourself or is it more about having fun? You might like to read only educational things and save TV for entertainment. Or you might find reading is really relaxing so you like to read YA or Nickolas Sparks romance novels to unwind before bed. Or you might like to read philosophy to broaden your mind but also read sci-fi for escapism. Even if you find you absolutely adore detective stories and would happily only read them for the rest of your life I’d keep regularly trying new things every now and again because you might discover something else you have a passion for and love equally as much.

OM already used books maybe? I can Imagine that regarding the looks of e.g. flow, that he buys used and therefore cheaper books... So like around 5-8€ and ordering them at the same time can save shipping so 6,5€ × 50= 325€. And also borrow and buy from Friends and local events where they also sell used books? (Dont know if this is common in the US)

You should really try getting "12 Rules For Life - An Antidote To Chaos" by Dr. Jordan B. Peterson. It's one the best books I have read in 2018 - it contains a brilliant psychoanalytic perspective at philosophy and other branches of study. It's self-help, but coherent and applicable.

I tried this habit few years ago, with sci-fi/noir, thriller and few psychological books from Doctor Wayne Dyer. The most important thing that I have learned is : 99% of cases, too much time waisted on the so called "inspirational" books. with the exception of "Your erroneous zones" and now "Flow". I learned so much from Asimov's books and stories that you cannot immagine. As well as for Bradbury and Dick. According to me, what change life is that you started this process and at the end of it you will be a better man, but simply because of the commitment that it takes, not for all the stupid things that are written on those books.

I agree with you. Most of the things I have read and i still think about daily, I have learned from reading sci-fi books and other fiction. They are like thought-experiments and really make me think about the world in new ways. I read 1984 by George Orwell when i was 19 and now five years later, it is still one of the most impactful books i have ever read.

Yes, The foundation is my favourite story so far. I read all the 7 books, non only the trilogy, from Prelude to Foundation to Foundation and Earth. I really enjoyed how Hari Seldon has been introduced in the first one, and many other things that I cannot say now ( spoiler ). Plus, 1984, along with The time Machine, really enhanced my perception of things. Really appreciated you comment, though. Have a great day, from Italy =)

Hey John, focus on quality, not quantity. One book a week is too much. Do not be just a fast consumer. Some books, like the one from Frankl, need to be read and 'digested' slowly. You also need to get back to them more times and re-read some parts to really understand them. Also, given your age, you may find some part more relevant than others but as you mature and grow, other parts, ideas may appeal too you more. The opposite goes for the books you find 'shallow', boring...Do not feel like you have to read/ listen to them till the end. Wish you insipring reading!

Johan Hoon to be fair, since many of the books are self-help or nonfiction, i think they can be read faster. if you’re going to read james joyce, for example, that requires much more mental effort to read and understand. (plus all self help/motivational books are lowkey the same lmao) but i totally agree about the quality over quantity!!

I've many times heard that smart (or something along those lines) people remember the ideas while less smart would remember the events and the least would remember names. Its supposed to be an ethics lesson type of thing about how we should focus on the real meaning behind things instead of gossipping about people but maybe its the same logic?

Hey John ! I think the idea of reading a book/week is great, in a sense, but what for? What's the idea behind? Hitting the number? Is it about learning or about a numerical challenge ? And do you target books of a certain size or a category to achieve this goal ? Because I think there are some books you cant read in a week, even if you wanted to, even if you were a super fast reader, especially if you're studying/working. Some books that are big in size and in content, profound or/and complex need time to grasp, and to reflect upon, to take notes.. sometimes it's also beneficial to read, stop, exchange with someone about an idea, take notes, and then go back to reading..this is, for me, the main idea behind reading, its main purpose..sometimes you learn more if you exchange about a book and reflect upon it than when you only focus on finishing the book..sometimes you learn more from reading one book in a month or half a month than when you do every week..Im not saying you're not doing all this, Im just saying this should not be solely about numbers.. Those were some ideas I had while watching your inspiring and great video as usual. Im a follower from Morocco and let me tell you're doing a great job ! So keep it up !
