Basically the theme embodies what the Allies felt at the time of the operation at first they were confident overly so and uphoric as they thought that the Germans were finished as in the Eastern front army group center was destroyed and France was liberated but as the battles went on they realized that they were being naive in their estimation and planning.

This makes me so proud to be British. My Grandfather fought in the Special Forces in WWII. He won the Military Cross and Bar (means he won the cross twice). He was mentioned in Dispatches three times. He was a remarkable gentleman. Major George Duncan, you can read about him in almost any book about the history of the SBS. He was originally in the LRPG with Stirling and Paddy Maine, knew them both well and counted them as friends. He can be seen in a documentary about Special Forces, there’s a small bit about SAS and SBS on Sicily and he can be seen celebrating with other operators.

Saw at the cinema in November 1977. Still holds it own against any war film made ever since. A stellar cast and I cannot think of any other film which has had better since "The Longest Day" in the early '60's. If you think this is the best, watch Theirs is the Glory and Battleground. Those are the real deal. A bridge too far is filled with errors (just like the longest day). Theirs is the Glory were a pure veteran cast doing what they did, they didn't have to act, just find their old slit trenches. In Battlefield are a lot of vets as well. Both movies are as accurate as can be without freaking the general public out. I get bored and annoyed with a bridge too far unless I put it on as background.

At the time of this film's release, the music was often claimed by many critics to be inappropriate. I think they may have missed the point. William Goldman (the screen writer) said that he broke the book down on the structure of the James Fox's speech about the cavalry arriving to save the day. At least to me, John Addison's music sounds like this idea. It's a rousing, hopeful theme about what is meant to happen. It feels like the spirit in which the soldiers had to face this situation and the same music becomes tragic when the reality of the events play out. So I don't think it's inappropriate. Either at the start of the operation or the failure at the end, the music seems emotionally correct.

I saw this movie as a child in 1977 - went to theater by myself this was long before the idea of PG-13. It was overwhelming, not in bad way, but just in the amount of information to process. Most war movies I had seen before where the 1950s era highly sanitized allies always win movies. It took me three watching of this to grasp that the allies lost. Since then I have also re-watched this and had had the luck of actually having romantic partners who also enjoyed watching it. In 1997 I went to Germany with my SO to visit my in-laws and we could not wait to escape family, booked 2 nights in Arnhem, found a hash shop and and spending two days baked and walked all over from Arnhem to Oosterbeek drop zones to Hotel Hartenstein to John Frost Bridge - climbing over the howitzer near the bridge. Good thing the dutch are tolerant people and just looked amused at a german and american being stoned war tourists. It has fascinated me. I have a half dozen books on it, I have war gamed from both sides - HPS Simulations Market Garden '44, and various FPS.

This movie had brilliant cinematography and art direction. It also could have had Audrey Hepburn in it too but her asking price was too high. I personally think she placed it too high because of the traumatic memories of that time because she was there in Holland during the invasion and the war. She was a courier for the resistance.

The final image of the little boy marching with a stick as a gun and being the only one visible in the frame after it freezes is the saddest part of the movie for me. It's in our DNA to kill and even what that child experienced, he's still playing a soldier. I just love that symbolism.

From the 50's until the Vietnam films of the 80s Hollywood could count on armies for hire such as the American, British,Spanish, or Italians to recreate ETO battles and the US Marines and Navy, the Australians, and the Japanese for the Pacific War. With the 70's and 80's you had the Phillippines government providing technical support for Vietnam War epics. With modern wars Hollywood couldn't get access to the most modern American vehicles and aircraft without letting their scripts get vetted by the Pentagon,so they went all in on CGI. Blackhawk Down is a noteworthy exception because the Pentagon approved the script.

A great film. Without question. And a great Marshal theme. God Bless Her Majesty The Queen.

Absolute masterpiece of a movie, and amazing how much the music score makes it so. In my opinion one of the best World War II films ever made. Thank you very much for this video.

@@geodes4762 Yes; I don't know if it's because 20 years older means more vets and authentic kit or not but TLD has something more than BTF.

Read Cornelius Ryan's book- the movie did it justice. Had the British only been patient, took the initiative and reinforced the British 1st Airborne with either Sir Richard Gale's 6th Airborne or the US XVIIIth Corps under Matt Ridgway, and had they LISTENED to Dutch & Allied Intel, they could've won.
