As a VN combat vet I brought home horrible demons it took me 40+ years to shed. I went thru periods of violence, crime, drug use, bar fighting, multiple wives, kids, etc. Trust me when I say there is nothing romantic or fun about real combat. Every vet I know has or had issues of trauma. My PTSD is now in a manageable place. I have good relationships, true love, a peaceful heart and demeanor. It IS possible to heal from traumas.

I am not a US person. I was in England during the Vietnam war which was relayed to us daily on the 6 o'clock evening news. It was hard to understand the seeming lack of support from a large portion of the US public, calling returning servicemen 'babykiller' and other derogatory epithets. If the US military had the domestic support the British had in the Falklands they would without doubt have done much better, especially when after the Tet offensive in 1968, they recovered from a surprise attack and had the enemy on the run. But the political directorate at the time seemed to have got cold feet and let the military down. The military did not lose the war...the politicians and domestic opponents threw it away, settling for a face saving withdrawal of sorts. Salute and honour all who served. Rest in peace all who fell.

They gave a limb for a meaningless war and a government that see them as numbers, and was spat on by their own country men and women when they came back. The anguish and sadness these men have felt after the war is soul-crushing. I hope nothing like this or any other conflict between any nation ever happens again.

Whatever your opinions of this war - respect to the men and women who served and gave their lives from the US, Australia and New Zealand. From a Brit. They never deserved the backlash they got, it's our shit politicians who put our kids in harms way from the safety of a nice office back in the offices of Washington etc.

During the war, the US Army sprayed 72 million liters of "Agent Orange" defoliants on the territory of South Vietnam to destroy forests, including 44 million liters containing 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzodioxin. Millions of civilians were killed, which is equivalent to the atrocities of the Nazis during World War II. Should we respect these killers for that? Hypocrite.

I used to work for Apache foreign salvage yard Texas , i was a parts puller and yard manager , tractor operator you name it i did it. i was 18 and had the joy of meeting many different walks of life. I had a gentleman come in and he was looking for parts...I noticed he was missing his right thumb from just the tip of the thumb to the join. Long story short we got to talking and he indulged me on how he lost that thumb. He was part of an American sniper team Vietnam and he was the sniper. Claimed the target they set out to kill that day was a VC sniper. he said they hunted and hunted him till they saw him. He then said unfortunately he saw me to but his shot was worse and mine wasn't. 1000mile stare all the way from that man. he then promptly bustled out of his thoughts and showed me pictures of his beautiful Vietnamese wife and his lovely kids, worlds gonna be without these men and woman one day learn, learn everything you can from em

My late father had PTSD. He served in Vietnam from Dec. 1965-Dec. 1966 as a military advisor. When I was growing up, sometimes Dad would have these explosions of rage that came out of nowhere, many times over a very minor issue. He was not a bad person; he worked to provide for his family, and was a handyman with the house and fixing the cars. I loved my Dad, but I was scared of him too, because I never knew when he would have an explosion of anger. He had served in the Korean War as a combat vet, and those two wars left him with psychological scars. In addition to his PTSD, I think he also had Intermittent Explosive Disorder. But in those days, there was no professional help for combat vets like there is today. Vets back then were told to shut up, and get on with it.

The "guy" getting executed was a murderer who had murdered several South Vietnamese women and children (the families of men who served as civilian authorities). BTW, perfectly legal in all societies to kill murderers, on the spot, who wear civilian clothing. The man shooting the NV spy was the Saigon Chief of Police who had just been told the spy had killed all of his assistant chief's family in cold blood. The Chief of Police was saved in the evacuation by Americans. He died (RIP) in D.C. some years back.

I sometimes look back to my time in the service with shame. The poor men who went to Nam, deserved more then some 40 year old cutter trying to work in the 1970's. You guys think most of them wanted to go? NO, the people that didn't have to get drafted just wanted to serve their country. I'll gladly pay respect to anybody that deserves it, and veterans, they deserve it.
