With Shadow of the Erdtree on the horizon, I set out to analyze the entirety of Elden ring within a series I aim to finish before the DLC's release. Will I succeed... No... Probably not. But for now, I'm super motivated and can't wait to hop back into my favorite game of all time, for one last ride before Messmer arrives. Hit that bell if you're looking for more Elden Ring content, because I'll be hopefully releasing more soon.

This video is solid, however I think you did a great disservice to Margit by only really discussing a parry focused approach to the encounter. I have often said that while Margit is the first major boss in ER, from a mechanical perspective he's FAR more complex then something like Gael who is the last boss of the DS3 DLC. I think it would have been nice to see someone shine some light upon that. I understand that you probably don't want the video to drag out too long though. I will just say that this is imo by far the best tutorial boss Fromsoft has ever designed and learning Margit will absolutely reward you with a much deeper understanding of ER combat and how it differs from previous entries. Also, I enjoy your content I've watched most of your videos but i just don't get the whole 'objective' schtick. It comes off as a Mauler type thing and just invites people to dislike what you're saying without even listening. What I said above is objective. Margit IS more mechanically complex than most DS3 bosses. However someone may not value that in a fight personally. This goes for every argument you make regarding ER. Someone can just very easily not value the same things you and I do about the game. To be clear, I AGREE with you on the bulk of what you're saying i just disagree that you can ever say any form of art is better than another objectively. Words like good, bad, better, best ECT. only have meaning relative to value which is subjective by definition. Anyway, I'm going to keep watching because I enjoy the videos I just disagree on that sort of framing.

33:54 That teleporter, I believe is meant as a misdirect to the player of how big the map is what the end-game areas are. Assuming you find this warp chest early on, before obtaining any map pieces from Liurnia, the moment you open it to teleport away you'll see that you're pretty _far_ away from that starting area. You might even think that you're at last area of the map, as you're almost at the border. At this point the map doesn't show hints of the Mountaintop of the Giants, even though you can see them from where you're standing.

Good video. Elden Ring was my first souls game and this video certainly brought back some feelings of nostalgia from my first wonderful play through. Interesting Elden Ring was what turned me into a souls fan and made me go back to FromSofts earlier works (first BB then DS1, DS2, then DS3) and I do believe Elden Ring is probably their best game (although I have heard very good things about Sekiro). From my experience I feel like a lot of people who moan about Elden Ring and say that FromSofts previous work was better have mentalities reminiscent of gen1ers (Pokémon fans who claim that Pokémon Red and Blue had the best designs, mechanics, etc.) in that they cling to outdated, clumsy game design and refuse to adapt. This is most felt with a lot of the asinine Elden Ring boss critiques several KZfaqrs have made. However, I still loved playing the older games and it is great to see how FromSoft improved over the years. I’m looking forward to part 2 coming out.

I really enjoyed the video, even though i disagree a little with your take on the weeping peninsular. It didnt feel at all like dlc content to me, and i'd argue its not even really meant to be optional. I mean - obviously it IS optional since you don't need to play through it. But I think it is optional in the same way that the tutorial cave at the beginning of the game is optional. If you already know the game and know all the mechanics and shortcuts, you don't need to go there. But as a new player, the Weeping Peninsula offers you a first look at a lot of concepts that are going to be important later, including a mini version of a legacy dungeon with a really cool and pretty strong sword at the end of it that even ties thematically into what you might wanna do next - because when my boyfriend and i played through elden ring the first time, castle mourne was sort of our turn around point. After storming that castle, it was time to re-attempt the first one that we got our ass handed at and kill Morgot. Also, Irina dying ties in directly with Hyetta, our friendly grape lover in the later game. I think she doesnt even show up at her initial location if you don't do irinas questline first, which is another reason Weeping Peninsular doesn't feel like dlc content to me.

I think their signature obliqueness is meant like most aspects of the game the demand your total attention, to keep the gray matter churning. I've always thought it's cool and mean (in a good way) as hell for the menus to be really weird to navigate, eg. They're never outright bad, ie badly designed, rushed, neglected, etc. but rather like the way QWERTY is technically counterintuitive yet the human brain can master it anyway. I think Miyazaki/From seeks to prove that to the player (as overall the games center on genuinely empowering you, as opposed to delusionally empowering you). I absolutely think cleaning it up a little both to be simply more modern and fun to play is a great choice. They've matured, I think is a big thing. They're not ultra edgy Demon's/Dark Souls From, they're in their Abbey Road era I'd say. Except hopefully the band stays together (I don't think they're done imo)

godefroy is the only asset flip i won't tolerate in this game. the other optional bosses, yeah, sure, its fine. but godefroy? not even an assetflip of a common enemy but a main, legacy dungeon boss. they didn't even bother to alter godrick's model like change up his head, weapons, remove one of his extra arms etc.
@jesterofjuice5132

I feel the same way. Probably the worst reuse in the game. At least when mogh and Morgott want to copy and paste themselves, they do it though a clone spell, rather than a son that's exactly the same asset as his father.
@matiasluukkanen7718
@matiasluukkanen7718 4 ай бұрын
Most likely Martin had written about Golden Order dynasty/lineage and Godefroy's loyalist attack against Leyndell alliance. So Fromsoft wanted to include him in some capacity, considering this was a major event. And given that he is also grafter and might be previous holder of Godrick's Great Rune, maybe even brother, father, uncle or twin to Godrick, it would make sense he is of similar stature. Fromsoft most likely did not have time to model him to be slightly different. Considering he is minor encounter. And he might be Godrick's twin. We cannot know.
@Skyflakes05
@Skyflakes05 4 ай бұрын
@@matiasluukkanen7718 but still, couldn't they just have him use a grafted scion model instead of exact same as Godrick's? if they used a grafted scion, sure they could elaborate it into like, where godrick got the idea on how his grafted scions would look like, or even inspired godrick into taking grafting into a whole new level with his form. i get the idea that its lore, but they could've just altered godrick's model slightly for godefroy. and like i said, its an asset reuse of a MAIN, LEGACY dungeon boss. they didn't have to make a new one with new animations, just an altered version where godefroy doesn't look exactly the same as godrick, weapons and all.

Astel being in a random cave in the middle of nowhere whilst making sense is still shitty reuse of an asset. You have to do a hour plus of a quest line just to find out that the boss is just in a random dungeon. It really should’ve been a boss unique to that quest.
@jesterofjuice5132
@jesterofjuice5132 4 ай бұрын
That one actually does make sense. Astel isn't the name of a character, its the species name for the final form of the falling star creatures. The Astel that we fight in ranni's quest is an important one, but isn't directly linked to her quest. It just happens to be in our way, I believe. That Astel is unique because it was "hewn into the erdtree," whatever that means lol

Margit's tail swipe is always jumpable and was intended by developer as is shown by Morgot's fight being on the flat surface. I disagree about parry>roll>block. in reality its more like walk>sprint>sprint+jump>jump>roll>parry>block. parry on its own is low skill mechanic as it invalidates positioning and stops intricate combos with combo branching on the first move reducing the game to saimon says parry and reducing boss moveset to only combo starters. just looking at parry only and no parry/ no roll videos we can see massive difference. LupinesOS made a lot of great vids about ER bosses. In general I frames and parry kinda exist as a crutch to souls games connecting them to turn based combat mechanics. Electric Underground did a good video on parries explaining what I mean.

My issues are the jank in the controls and combat that haven't been fixed across the franchise. Input drops, input buffer problems, input reading. The game has incredible spectacle, but that wears thin when the gameplay suffers so much. Nioh really spoiled me for depth, skill, smoothness and cool factor for combat. I've always felt that Souls games are B level work at best despite the spectacle being A+. I don't find them hard but filled with BS more than actual difficulty. And if a player just slows down, observes, the games almost beat themselves.

Will keep watching but was a little offput by the intro going in on Dark Souls 1. I feel like your perception is that players who like ds1 tend to shit on Elden Ring for various reasons and i think thats rarer than you think. The players who attack elden ring are usually those who are attracted to the series for the super finely tuned combat encounters from games like ds3, bloodborne, and sekiro. Which, yes, naturally an open world and an impossible amount of options will decrease the ability to balance encounters. Elden ring more than makes up for this with probably the best world design and exploration in gaming history and also an absolute insane level of variety while managing to still be extremely gratifying though maybe not quite as buttoned up as its predecessors. Dark souls 1, is still a beautifully designed game. The level design, the standard of systems it set, its esoteric nature and its indifference to the player. I think its unfair to call it poorly designed. Frustration is not just a tool used to make overcoming a challenge feel better. It is a tool used to encourage behaviors and push design.

not that I disagree with the overall point you're making, but the draconic tree sentinels are both preeeeetty necessary. If somebody was looking for reasons to criticize the game and didn't like the idea of asset reuse, the draconic tree sentinel being ctrl-v'd in front of one of the final bosses of the game with zero moveset differences from its earlier appearance is a pretty egregious example. Personally I think asset reuse is fine (within reason, erdtree/putrid avatars are the only ones that truly wear out their welcome in ER imo) and bringing back shit from the early game for you to clown on is a lot of fun, but if your criteria is just "mandatory boss reuse" and you're ignoring something as only-technically distinct from mandatory boss reuse as the second tree sentinel, you're pretty obviously talking past what people who criticize elden ring's boss reuse are talking about.

@@idontcare9661I think the gameplay loop of ds is better. The areas are meticulous and well thought out. Not to say that er isn’t, but the only dungeon I thought was truly good, was stormveil. Don’t get me wrong, I love the aesthetics of the volcano manor and leyndell. But they didn’t have enough looping shortcuts from secret areas, or tying in to the open world like I’d hoped. The music in ds3 is also top tier. Other than the opening theme, which is radagons music, and mohg’s theme, I can’t remember a single track from ER, period. In ds1 you have that one track that slaps (gwynn), but in 3, you have all of them. Eudex gundir, midir, soul of cinder, the twin princes, the demon princes, gael, shit even the deacons of the deep was ight. So yea music killed it in ds imo Combat is arguable. Because I feel that is the main identity of their games. ER is an evolution. An event. Shit has elements from all their games and more tweaks. And I love them for it, and it’s more streamlined.. but it detracts from the skill it takes to genuinely HAVE to dodge their attacks and get used to being up in the bosses face. In ER yea no just run away a little, then jump attack spam or use ashes of war. This isn’t how I play so I enjoyed it, but it dilutes the community because we all didn’t suffer through it together. I think the drip.. is arguable as well. Nothing nobody else hasn’t said before I’m sure, but ER has some fire armor sets, but as someone who spends a lot of time mixing and matching to make unique characters, it is a pain in the ass to get good looking mixed sets. DS3, bro you can mix up just about anything you want and it’s tough as hell. I think it gives you more agency in how you want to play, because you can have your character be exactly what you think them up as. If that makes any sense. Bosses. Yea. Idk man they’re all iconic in ds1 and ds3, but I loved almost all of them in ER too so no gripes there. I just wish there were more spectacle pieces I guess? Like larger massive demons or whatever That’s just how I feel about the matter. I’ve never beaten ds2 so I don’t have any concrete opinions on that, other than it felt like shit. Elden Ring has a bunch of soldier archetypes reskinned for the different armies, a bunch of dark souls 2 golem reskins, bat/bird reskins and some fishmen. Apart from that it has 8 unique bosses (thus enemies) in the whole game that aren't repeated. I don't see much of a difference between the two. And souls games have always reused early bosses as end game enemies.@@facundovera3227

@@BraidzMCElden Ring has 70 bosses without repeats, and enough normal enemies that I can't even count them. Maybe play the videogame next time.

Oh i just saw your other comment. I have 221 hours and just started a new playthrough to prep for the DLC. Doesn't make my statement any less true. Its a whole lot of padding, not enough premium. Basically, Elden Ring is Dark Souls 2 two.@@facundovera3227

Imo dark souls 3 is better cause more doesn't mean better id rather have 50 hours of a game that is mostly a 9/10 while sometimes being a 8/10 or a 10/10

Elden ring just isn't as good as bloodborne. It lacks focus

elden ring has worse combat than bloodborne, has worse lore than ds1, has worse bosses than ds3. it has a enormous world, with alot of filler, it literally has the same amount of enemy variation and bosses of a dark souls game stretched to this enormous world, making it empty and repetitive. you like this one the most its one thing, but "objectively" the best one?whats the parameter for that? your taste or your subjective opinions? yeah fuck this.

Yo that take is crazy lol Bloodborne's combat is literally one of the worst in soulsborne. The cripple mechanic makes almost every beast fight a joke, the parry system ranges from zero risk freebee shots, to missing your shot for no reason, and you have to grind a resource just to attempt it. The trick weapons are incredibly basic and offer basically nothing to the combat except for overpowered combo moves that destroy every single boss if you use beast blood pellets. And you're comparing that to Elden Ring... The game with two extra jump moves added to every single weapon's moveset, not to mention crouching moves, and situations where you can jump over bosses moves. There's also the improved double and triple parrys, which are obviously more engaging than shooting a boss once from outside the range of their attack. Finally, there's a thousand different ashes of war and spells to offer a variety of playstyles which absolutely crushes the basic ass trick weapons system. Ds1's lore is literally just a creation myth with dragons and none of it makes sense. You can like it more if you want, but fantasy nonsense certainly doesn't objectively compare to a well crafted story with many twists, turns, betrayals and loyalties within the main ruling families' backstory. All of which was written by George R R Martin, who has like 50 years of experience writing political fantasy. Once again, your opinion doesn't mesh with reality. Ds3 does have incredible bosses, and this is the only thing you've said that makes objective sense. However, the quality of ds3's bosses comes from its combat being incredibly basic. The only useful way to fight in ds3 is through simple dodge then attack combat, highlighted by having almost no parryable bosses. I love ds3, but it doesn't take many risks, whereas Elden ring's combat and bosses offer, triple parry, jumpable moves, ashes of war, spirit summons, and even horse combat. There is no real comparison, Ds3 perfected an archaic system, Elden Ring evolved that system to an insanely higher degree. And yeah, maybe it has the same amount of enemy variation, but the mandatory content is rich with unique assets. Once again I say, You choose to play the optional content that would obviously reuse assets, and now you're complaining about seeing optional content. Clearly you have no idea what objectively means, because you've given the absolute worst examples to use in your comment, except for ds3, and you clearly just like them It is objectively the best one, and if you watch the rest of the series, maybe you'll find out why, instead of getting upset and writing a ridiculous comment, followed by saying, "fuck this..."

I personally believe that it comes down to preference. Elden ring is currently my favourite even though I’m halfway through Bloodborne right now. Elden ring was also my first game from the soulsborne series so I might have that kind of bias. A lot of these games come down to subjectivity, and I don’t believe there to be very many objectively better things, but rather different things. For example, my personal favourite world is Elden rings, this might be an objective fact in some peoples eyes because it’s massive and the sense of discovery and secrets hidden everywhere is mind blowing. However, dark souls 1 also boasts levels that are more finely crafted and interconnected, making the game space feel very open and immersive. Neither of these are objectively better than the other. Its preference. Combat wise Elden ring boasts the most amount of options and also in my opinion the best combat system, because of those options. However, the bosses sometimes don’t take full advantage of this, leaving the pinnacle moments of the game’s combat feeling a bit flat sometimes. You are also able to essentially customise the difficulty to a frankly absurd level and some of the bosses in my first playthrough required little to no mastery, just spamming ashes of war. I do believe the feeling of bloodborne’s combat is better with hit registration and feedback, the camera shake, blood spray and overall impact feels so good. However, saying Bloodborne has better combat is definitely a matter of opinion, and definitely could be down to the more fine tuned nature of the game. The bosses probably had more time to be worked on, the same goes for the combat encounters and the enemies. Maybe those were perfected, but for me the actual system of Elden ring is superior. I agree with the lore for now though. Dark souls 1 lore is more than just worldbuilding to flesh out the world. It’s not only context, but pivotal to the philosophical ideas of the game. While Elden ring’s lore has more potential as of right now and may even surpass dark souls in the future with dlc updates, dark souls one has a very cohesive theme that all the lore refers back to and it’s genuinely amazing learning about the characters from that game. I can see the appeal of Elden ring’s lore, but the theme and mood of it just doesn’t hit the same highs as dark souls 1 does for me. However, the dlc may rectify this because right now the world of Elden ring is nowhere near complete. I agree with you both on some of your points, and I personally believe Elden ring to be the best, but I can’t deny that the other games have impacted me more in other ways that Elden ring hasn’t, and vice versa

I couldn't be asked to count every single enemy. But Elden Ring has 70 unique bosses, that's more than any game in the Souls series, the only one that compares is Bloodborne.

I think the dark souls series was pretty concisely wrapped up within the trilogy. However, I would be happy to see another game in that style, though, I would by no means say that the open world was detrimental. If you boss rush from legacy dungeon to legacy dungeon, the game functions very similarly to Dark souls.
