I'm not part of the LGBTQ community and I hope what I'm about to say isn't considered offensive because I don't mean it that way. But when I read your comment I wasn't happy. Not because you want him to be gay but because you have to take something not explicitly stated as confirmation of him being gay. When I read your comment I thought about how I would feel if I had to look for confirmation that a doll was considered a woman or considered black and that thought hurt. You shouldn't have to search for confirmation, it should just be confirmed. I hate the argument that dolls are for kids and that's why we don't have gay or lesbuan dolls because that makes no sense to me. Kids understand better than adults that everyone deserves respect and representation.

I wonder if something could be said for the barbie movies with serious sapphic energies. I'd consider Diamond Castle, Starlight Adventure, and Big City Big Dreams to be the gayest barbie movies. Big City Big Dreams especially had some intentional or not implications with the dual barbies but also some serious coding with the character of Rafa, who is basically a gay stereotype who says 'fabulous' and legit says that the only label he cares about is designer. i also love Rafa

@Moonlitwatersofaqua Жыл бұрын
The way that whole kiss was handled was really odd. Darling and Apple were barely friends and Apple woke up thinking Daring kissed her. Clearly the two weren't in love (at least... not yet). The universe just decided this was their destinies. Its long since been established the EAH characters get stuck in arranged marriages with people they don't feel romantic love for. So this relationship feels a lot like "I'm kissing her because its my job." All well at least they actually kissed. Unlike Korrasami.

I’m a little hit or miss on the whole “story” aspect of dolls. There’s certainly nothing wrong with having diverse characters in every shape and form, especially in children’s media, since exposing kids to that kind of stuff only makes for better, more caring people, that’s just not the way I played as a kid. I wasn’t into Barbies, I was more a dollhouse kinda girl, but our dolls often had names and identities too, if not as fleshed out. All sorts of toys came with names and histories, including my toy horses. Grand Champions for the win! But I could not have cared less about any of that. I threw all of that out the window to create my own characters and stories, which is the essence of imaginative play, at least in my mind.

Happy Pride Month! I'd like to add another two gay characters from Integrity Toys. In 2018 they released Laird Drake, a guy from 1950s (as wel as the rest of the characters in East 59th series). There was a line in his story that explicitly said he's into men. Unfortunately it was the only release of that character BUT in 2021 Integrity Toys released Augustus "Gus" Blake, the second male doll in this line. Now allow me to cite the official description from the website: "Swayed by his perfectly polished demeanor, Laird fell hard for Gus and things grew quickly. Not only did the pair become fast friends and passionate lovers, but they would also eventually co-found the East 59th Agency, and the rest, as they say, is history!" Since Gus has been released twice already I hope there will be some kind of couple set in the future! And I think it's also worth mentioning that Mattel has released some dolls that (despite not being referred to as LGBT) shift binary gender presentation. BMR1959 Ken doll with neon green hair and makeup it the first who comes into mind (I know that any person can wear makeup and nails but it's first male doll with these in Mattel lineup). There's also a Barbie Fashionista 128 who has pretty much gender neutral look and also new body type. It's not explicitly said what identity this doll may represent but it's defitinitely open to interpretations! (Sorry for mistakes, English is not my first language)

Once restrictions began to lift a few months later I went back to buy more of the dolls and their accessories only to find they had lapsed into clearance status which was bittersweet as they were gong away and yet were deeply discounted as well. I do wonder if they ever caught on with actual children as was Mattel's intended goal or if simply they were loved and collected by adult collectors such as ourselves.

Also don't forget She-Ra was created as an action + fashion doll in 1984, and thanks to the reboot by DreamWorks and Netflix, she is now considered to be canonically lesbian, similar to the retroactive canonization for Kimber and Stormer. Fun fact about LOL's newest holiday doll for 2021 bares a striking resemblance to an outfit and hairstyle Trixie Mattel wore in UNHHHH. It was the "Make Loneliness Work For You." great vid as always

Rainbow high had made a post I think last pride where they had all the main dolls with pride flags and the one I remember specifically off the top of my head was sky who had a trans flag (of course that's who I remember because I'm trans, a trans men tho) but anyway, I was surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video? Am I tripping XD I'll go back through their insta at some point but I remember this very well because I spread it around to all my LGBTQIA+ friends and freaked out about it. Anyhow I'm new to this channel but I absolutely love it! Getting back into doll collecting and I adore hearing all the history with dolls and things I haven't heard or known. 💕

Love the video!! I feel like the Tom of Finland doll would’ve fit in the category of the Billy doll, since they came out around the same time. I really appreciate the timeline of lgbtq+ dolls, it really helps shows that they deserve to exist in the world, and that the creators themselves have the right to create something that relates to them as well!

I wanted to see Apple come to terms with her story not being 'perfect', and growing open to the idea that her 'prince' Charming didn't have to be a boy. Darling, I'm pretty sure everyone thought was queer starting when she saved Ginger. I need to rewatch the series - I adored it so much!

MGA still leaving these tiny crumbs of Jella for us to pick up. It would be nice if they gave us more 🥲 I'm definitely grabbing that Bratz set, hoping "the right time" is now for MH too. 🏳🌈🏳⚧🌈 🖤

Wanted to shout out one doll I am aware of (because I love her), which is Pullip Assa from 2005. She comes in a mechanics jumpsuit decorated in little 'patches' and pins and a very rainbow sweatband headband with a pin that explicitly says 'Queer' (she also comes with a metal toolset which is very cute.). Now, it's hard to say if the company explicitly intended for Assa to be a gay doll as the company that made her, Jun Planning, was Japanese, and it the patches came across as random 'American' things (her other pin is a star with the American Flag in it), or representative of American youth culture in a way they saw it - her 'theme' in the marketing is about music. But a rainbow headband that has a button which says 'queer' tells me, she was probably meant to be a lesbian doll. I have the stock outfit on a different Pullip so my personal headcannon for her is that she is and has a crush on one of the other Pullips I have.

I loved Creatable World and have several of them. It’s awesome having so many clothes and accessories that can be customized to any type of character. I wish Mattel would include more fashion choices in Barbie and Monster High.

I would like to add another character to the Integrity list! Although it was never confirmed by IT the Fashion Royalty character Luchia Z. was constantly very vague in her storycards, but many collectors considered her being a trans woman, even if IT never confirmed nor denied it she went through a headsculpt change that added more androgynous and even masculine lines to her face, many fans considered that as being IT embracing the theories. I love both Luchia’s headscupts and consider her the first but unofficial IT trans character. Btw I found your channel a couple months ago and I basically ate up every video ever since, I love the way you research and the themes you choose, and your voice is very relaxing as well ☺️ congratulations!

In the 1970s Dusty the Professional tennis playing doll and her Black female friend Sky came out on the market . People just assumed Dusty was meant to be a lesbian and Sky was her girlfriend . Also in the 1970s 9 inch tall Big Jim and all his butch male buddies of different nationalities came out . Jim had the manliest jobs and was clearly meant for Boys . When you see Jim and his friends together it looks like he and his friends were designed by someone who got the ideas for each character while looking around in a gay biker bar . Jim had lots of playsets That were the same basic patterns as Barbie's playsets made Masculine ,just for him and his friends . Examples Barbie's house was Jim's Karate studio Barbie's Friendship airplane was Jims Coast Guard Rescue plane Barbie's Beach Van was Jim's Camping van Barbe's Ski Cabin was Jim's Shack in the jungle . We can still find photos online and buy them on Ebay .

13:06 As someone who is Aromantic, I find it annoying that often times if a character isn't depicted in a relationship that they are just assumed gay.

Coming to this video very late, but loved it! I'm a proud owner of the Carlos and Tyson dolls (far superior to Billy himself, lol). A little disappointed that you didn't mention the Tom of Finland doll or the Ken BMR1959 gay club kid doll (with green hair and full makeup). That BMR Ken doll in particular might have been the gayest mass-market doll ever produced (thanks, Mattel!), and sits proudly on my office desk every day!

This video (unknowingly) points out how much it sucks being an asexual/aromantic person looking for equal representation. Being frustrated that Jade Hunter is literally constantly decorated in aro pride colors is one thing (headcanon), but Clawdeen Wolf literally being intentionally created to be "less boy crazy" but everyone assuming lesbian because "not showing interest in anyone must automatically mean actually interested in other womean?" Maddening. Aspec represenation is important, dammit!
