Hello Everyone!
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this week's video for my Black History Month Series, Black Gold. Please note that this is just a brief history and review of the Head Wrap within the African Diaspora. Hopefully you will take something away from this video. Join me next week in discussing topics regarding the Black Power Movement and Black Artist and Writers.
As always, Much love and respect,
Lyndsay

Thank your for this... there have been other documentaries stating that head wraps derived from slavery, but it has always been a part of our culture pre-slavery. Thank you for clarifying this. You documented this topic so well, well done.

I’m a black woman from Arkansas and I love this content it brought both tears 😭 of sadness and tears 😭 of pride 😊. This was truly a honor to our heritage 👏🏽. It goes to show you can’t completely take away someone’s culture. Here is states, south mostly our people were made to feel a different way about head scarfs and wraps because of slavery..... but our historical culture and traditions of beauty eventually started to prevail 😊🥰 . The beauty of the colors and patterns against our various complexions are truly a work of art .

Thank you so much for this video. I was sent home today from school because of my headscarf. I am one thousand African and I’ve grown up with the culture all around me and I feel very confident with my culture and I love it but it was very saddening when I was told I couldn’t be in school with it on.

Beautiful! I am 45 years old and have always loved and admired headwraps and have always seen the women in my family in the south and in the Caribbean wear headwraps. But as I was growing up they didn’t allow headwraps in schools and later jobs. Now with the natural hair movement I embrace my culture and wear my head wrap with pride. Thank you.

Beautiful! I have been wrapping consistently for the last few months & I actually have enjoyed the socio-cultural empowerment that is being hailed by African school of thought throughout the world. Powerful...enjoying your expression of this gem of a crown that we choose to wear. Watching & loving your contribution from London England

Well done. This heritage goes even further back to the Hebrew tribes our people come from. For the God of Abraham’s daughters covered their heads. When the tribe of Juda fled to Africa they continued these and many traditions. We are God’s chosen people.

Hello! I was wondering if as a white woman it would be cultural appropriation to wear a head scarf. As said in the video I am jealous of the beauty of it. I am unsure if people would take offence if I chose to wear such a meaningful piece of their culture without being of said culture or race. Can anyone please enlighten me of their opinions (negative and all) because I really just don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. Thank you

(At 7:00) You say we aren't forced to take off our headwrap but, what about the school systems? No one except for me wears a headwrap and if I don't take her off, in-school suspension for me!! For what? For wanting to feel closer to my ancestors and comfortable in me? My parents don't want me to get in trouble over this matter and I understand their reasoning but, why should I conform to a system that wasn't created with me in mind??
@lyndsayarcher
@lyndsayarcher 4 жыл бұрын
Hey sis, I totally agree with you. This is definitely a reality and if I’m being honest, when I was in school I definitely would have been told to take mine off as well. Thank you for adding to this conversation. When I made this video, I was generally speaking but it is incredibly true that our school systems have not historically supported our heritage or means of expressing our culture(s). Keep being strong and being a light. Don’t let anyone try to dim it. It’s well needed in this world. 👑
