in this video once again my wife's beautiful Southeast Kentucky Appalachian accent is insulted when a viewer calls into question what she said when she says "this is the community nice place QUITE community" between the 6:42 and 6:44 Mark in the video.
we have to deal with cruel comments like this about our Appalachian language quite often sometimes people legitimately misunderstand, other times they're just cruel and they like to make fun of people different than themselves.

Thank you for this video of the place where I grew up! I attended Hall Elementary and Hall Jr. High from 1971 to 1979 and remember the gym very well. The band room was a one room building that sat next to creek, just to left after you cross the bridge by the gym. The elementary school was to left of the jr high building, where it looks like an addition to the jr high has been built. There was a country store on the other side of the tracks from the school. We would go there during lunch and play pinball. The neighborhood where the school is was called the Lower Camp. I lived in the Upper Camp, where Mountain Supply is now. Our house was on the left just as you crossed the tracks on the way toward the cemetery and was said to have been a train station at one time. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know the house was very old and seemed very big to me as a kid. The house was owned by Clyde Bennett, who owned the mine where my grandfather worked. Beginning in the 4th grade, I was allowed to ride my bike from the Upper Camp to the Lower Camp where most of my friends lived. In the summer, I would leave early in the morning and not come home until the sun was going down. My friends and I rode our bikes, played Batman and Robin and cops and robbers, shot BB guns, waded the creek behind the gym, and swung on “grape vines” in the hills above the old ball field. I’d love to be able to go back in time and spend another day there as a kid with Dorm, Mark, Joe, Tony, Leroy, and the rest of the gang. I don’t know if they all are still with us, but I hope they are doing well. I also attended Sunday School at the Gray’s Knob Church of God, so this video really brought back lots of memories from my childhood in Harlan County. Thanks again for the video and allowing me to reminisce!

I love your story Charles! I'm going to pin it to the top of the comments so everyone who watches a video will have a chance to read it. I too wish I could go back to the little house I grew up in and spend just one day with my friends and family, how precious those memories are!

My dad Archie Brock was born somewhere around Gray's Knob in 1930. We drove him through there about 5 years ago but it had changed so much he couldn't recognize any landmarks from his childhood. I was born at that hospital in 1959 when we lived in Cawood. He was pastor at Friendship Baptist Church in Cawood at the time. Thanks for the memories.

I have been to that little church at the end of the old road and I have played in the Hall High gym there. Man, I'm getting old. Had lots of friends that went to Hall high. One of my best friends in the world went to Hall high. He unfortunately passed away way too young in a motorcycle wreck. Just another great video by the Coyote's.

As you leave the camp there is a huge rock called Big rock. It’s right above the old church. People hike to it all the time and they walk out on it and take photos.

I used to live in Grays knob, somebody pulled a gun on me and tried to kill me, across from the school, but thank God a school teacher came out to her car and pulled her gun out, and she told the guy to put the gun down, she's saved my life.
