Pathfork can be accessed through Harlan county from 987 onto 2005 but that's a very long and lonely drive on a treacherous road. The safest, most practical and certainly shortest route out of pathfork is through Bell county onto 119. The coal miners memorial highway (72) for all practical purposes ends above pathfork and starts again on the other side of the mountain at Liggett. This information is from Kentucky State highway department road maps.

Black Star Pentacostal church. My brother in law is the Pastor. Rev. J.C. CRAIG. The old mine & camp houses were just beyond the church. My sister and brother in law lived there in the 70's. My grandparents raised their kids at Insull mine camp next to the Insull Baptist church with grandpa Wright help build and preached at. I use to walk the tracks in black star. I'm in Tn now but love going home. My grandpa Cupp also lived in Insull coal camp.

That first curve you went thru was always called the "S" curve by everyone. Blackstar Coal Co. used employ around a 1,000 men at one time. Had a commissary that sold everything from furniture to groceries. Paid the Miner's in company scrip. Just up past the church you stopped at. The store you went by in Tugglesville was run by Bud Bunch and his family. That first road on your left after the Pathfork sign is where my Uncle still lives. Spent many a day upon that mountain. Thank you again so much for this video. God bless.

I was raised and still live in Pathfork . My family attends the Blackstar Church where you ended. This was always a mining community , now some of our beauty of the mountains has been destroyed by strip mines and now the loggers ! Shame when you get up in the mountains and see all the damage that has been done .Such good country folks live here that would do anything for their neighbors. Hunters and ATV riders come from all over to enjoy our mountains. Thanks for this video and look forward to more. Linda Eads Howard

A " tin" roof is steel that's been coated in zinc. The old school way was to dip the sheets of steel in molten zinc, but the usual method is electroplating. As long as the zinc isn't scraped off, a galvanized roof can last a century or so. Sometimes, an old shack that looks like a sneeze would knock it over will stand up to storms and everything..

That's fascinating, and that's very true about those shack being a lot stronger than they look. Thanks!!

I wish KY 72 gets connected, but instead of it connecting across the mountain, it should go under the mountain! Like a tunnel! Eureka! I have found the suggestion for sure! Why not build a tunnel that will connect KY 72 above Pathfork with KY 72 in Liggett, and name it the Coal Miners Memorial Tunnel! And while we're at it, why not connect KY 219 with KY 72, and extend it right onto Pathfork! That way, people in Pathfork won't have to travel to either Pineville or Middlesboro to shop or go to a doctor! #JustSaying

@IgnitedCoyote3 жыл бұрын
That's right, I should have mentioned that in the video, 72 starts at the Harlan bypass and goes to liggett, stops there and turns into a trail only accessible with off road vehicles turns into a good road again above pathfork and comes out in Bell County, so 72 is one road divided by a mountain. I'm also told you can access it from 987 through Smith, but that's a long, lonely ride on a curvy and treacherous road. the only practical and safe access is through Bell County off 119. Thanks I appreciate it. God bless,!
