I think what's great about this song is that it really captures the voice of the child, which is very much needed in a hyper-sexualised industry that doesn't cater so much for audiences below the age of 18. The simple language, its plaintive yet unsettling questions ("am I really so bad, mum? I'm afraid, you know this, don't you mum? You know it all, don't you, my mum?"), may not compare with more well known works that are, in a lot of instances, poetry set to film. It's a song about a child, for children, and that perspective is groundbreaking in Bollywood, even if the cinematography seems to heighten the trauma of separation to Western eyes. The familial pressure to perform academically might be something of a stereotype, and mocked accordingly, but what is not generally understood is that the South Asian conception of children, and childhood, is also very different. Their existence is often contingent on material considerations, much like children of the Victorian era. What we might call "adultification" in today's language, in fact. As such, the acquisition and comprehension of language in South Asia happens far earlier than it does in the West. So, without seeking to excuse the "desi" mentalilty, it is difficult for parents to recognise, let alone appreciate, neurodiversity and the trauma with which it often travels (Lord knows it's still a struggle here in the UK, and I'm speaking as a secondary school teacher). In that sense, I think that the voice of the child is diminished somewhat by the portrayal of the mum, and the cinematography is guilty of allowing people to make the easy assumption that the song is simply an ode to mums. I don't believe it is. But when a culture places mothers and motherhood on a pedestal, without questioning their experiences of being victims of discrimination and exploitation, or their roles in both resisting it and sometimes perpetuating it, it's hard to disabuse people of such notions. Getting down to the level of a child is much harder than it looks. Even for mums

Though the song may not deserve a place in top 100 bollywood songs, it hits you at different level when you watch the movie. The dyslexic kid was sent to boarding school by his stubborn and indifferent father against the wishes of his mother after repeatedly performing poorly in regular schools. In the song he sings to his Maa (Mother) "I don't tell you (Mother) but I'm scared of the dark. I don't reflect it on my face, but I care about you. Don't you know all this, my mother! "

Oh I can't say too much about this song because it leaves a huge emotional lump in my throat, and my eyes just fill with tears. This song - and film - is pure emotion. And the boy (Darsheel) who played the role of 'Ishaan' is perhaps one of the finest actors I've ever witnessed on-screen. He managed to portray such difficult emotions so effortlessly, I would love to know how he got into that mindset because those scenes are hard-hitting. But his journey is beautiful as it comes full circle 😀

Part of the reason the song is so loved is because of the film. Taare Zameen Par is really well loved, and "Maa" is special because of how distinct it is from a lot of popular bollywood songs. Personally I don't think the song itself is all that groundbreaking, but it's just .. special I suppose. Again that has a lot to do with how loved the film is. It was, I guess, something new and not the usual for Bollywood music.

no matter how many times I hear this song, I weep.you have to read the translation of the lyrics. the confusion of a child with learning disabiities when his own parents take the step of sending him to a boarding school. In the end everything works out for the child's best interest but the lyrics pierce your soul

The song by itself out of context or translation isn't a great song by all means. But as a scene from what happens due to his father being an absolute piece of shit thinking there must be something wrong with his child. This is what Amir Khan was trying to convey with the film. That children with learning disabilities exist and we shouldn't shun them or take them away from families etc. Yes true the mother should have done more but in India especially at the time. Didn't get much of a say .......(debatable I suppose) Please watch the film as it is truly a great feel good movie by the end. You will still be in tears but happy tears. Also a Brit and Enjoying your videos!

You don't get it because you don't know and understand the lyrics of the song..Most importantly, you don't know what emotions are being displayed in this song. My advice: use English subs. Just the visuals may not give you full import of the song.

The mother is crying because she doesn't want to let her son go, but she has to let her son go. It's a dichotomy. It was tough getting admission into that school, in the movie. It happens in every house in India. Our parents sacrifice their happiness and everything for us. And we strive to make them proud of us. Parents are equivalent to god in Indian culture. I like your review, it's different perspective to the situation. It's very descriptive and original.

This movie this song are beyond standards. Only an Indian family with typical Indian emotions can understand. I cry every time I hear this, not because it pierces my heart, which it does, but because of Maa , my mom. This is about mother and why we love Moms.

No, sadly you werent right. Please watch the movie. There were a lot of movies made about differently enabled children, adults in India. The reason the song is probably on the 100 greatest bollywood songs is because it is a ground breaking song. In the song, you never see the child sing, just his eyes emote. It is his heart calling to his mum saying, how come you didnt understand Mom? I'm scared, I'm lost and I'm alone. You know everything about me mum, you are aware of everything ma, even though I dont ever tell you. Watch the movie, watch Barfi, watch Deiva Thirumagal, all about differently abled people.
