I thought it might be nice to cruise through the lower portion of Death Valley on my way home from the SEMA show in Las Vegas... and what should have been a 9 hour drive turned into an accidental camping trip.
Hop on board for a little adventure through the Striped Butte Valley and check out some of the sights and sounds of this little corner of Death Valley.
Thanks for watching!

Great video, I just bought a 99 4.7 limited WJ. Not because i was specifically looking for one, but because i found a good deal on it. I was looking for a v8 4x4 suv to tow my RZR and be able to sleep in the back and possibly take on some small adventures. They seem to be an under rated vehicle, and very capable with the solid axles, and the quadra drive's factory progressive locking diffs. Looking forward to getting mine squared away and having some adventures with it.

Great video, fantastic example of how a routine trip can turn into an emergency and why its always good to take another vehicle as it doubles the chances of having the tools and equipment you need to make it back, ratchet straps and zip ties might have held that exaust up long enough to limp out of there i've never been stuck over night looks nerve racking.

I run my ZJ (5.2l V8) with no muffler. Sounds really nice and isn't too loud. Seriously though, you have long arms on that WJ. you need to get off the dirt roads and hit some more hardcore trails. Come out to AZ and take a few runs through Florence junction with myself and the fine folks at the VJC (virtual jeep club).
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm still learning this stuff. I find that the lack of a locking rear diff. makes some things tougher than they should be and my local off road shop says the "odd ball" diff in this thing doesn't have any options... do you run a stock differential or have you found a way to get a locker in your rig?
@98tjc
@98tjc 9 жыл бұрын
autoedit I believe Aussie makes a locker for the Dana 44a, nobody else though as far as I know.
@KurNorock
@KurNorock 9 жыл бұрын
autoedit There are auto lockers available for the 44a, but there is no point in wasting the money on that. You are much better off getting a ford 8.8 axle under the back of your rig. That way you will have a very stout axle that can take just about any locker available, and also many other upgrades. You could easily build an 8.8 up to run 37s safely. As for myself, my financial situation has kept me running the stock open diff 44a and i still manage to get into some knarly places. I would eventually like to jump straight to 1 ton axles and 40+ inch tires, but that is well off in the future. I have a couple videos on my channel you can check out just to see what i mean. the one in crown king really shows how you have to work when you don't have a locker. the video i have of the waterfall in Elvis (florence junction) shows that even without a locker, you can still do cool stuff that people with lockers couldn't do. (I was the only person to make it up that ledge that day. Even some much more built rigs with larger tires and lockers just couldn't make it) there are a few techniques you can use in the mean time. for example, using your left foot to put pressure on the brake pedal can get you a bit more traction (I've had people swear they could see my locker kicking in even though i don't have one) and above all you have to learn how to pick your lines. All the technology and gadgets in the world won't get you over an obstacle if you are hitting it at the wrong angle.

I've bought and sold the 94/95 Cobra intakes for around $300 to $400, of course you will most likely sell the throttle body, fuel rails, pressure regulator and injectors so you should be able to get on the high side of that, maybe quite a bit more. Not to be too tough on ya, but you NEVER go desert 4 wheeling without filing a flight plan with friends and relatives. A sat phone is also a great option, so they can find you when things go wrong. And something ALWAYS goes wrong. Also, for traversing rocks, a locker in the rear diff makes ALL the difference.

Yes, all true! I did let the wife know the basic route I would be taking and the funny thing was she had a feeling it was going to be an overnight-er (I have pretty bad luck). I took the jeep to 4wheel parts and they told me there is no locker for the odd rear end in this jeep...kind of a bummer. Thanks for the comment and watching, much appreciated!

autoedit You won't be able to get a selectable locker for the 44a, but Spartan and Aussie make lunchbox lockers. Great video.

HA! She was pretty good about it. I lucked out scoring her...she even knew ahead of time that with my (bad) luck and clumsy nature...stuff was going to go wrong but I would end up fine.

great video. i always enjoy watching these because you're so entertaining. but quick question, why didn't you leave the hanger in place and just strap the broken exhaust out of the way to the frame or something solid? keep the videos coming

Dude that was awesome. It gives me a little more confident in my 99 grand cherokee limited I bought a month ago for 300 bucks. Of course so far I had the bearings done on the transaxle, new water pump, now working on replacing front cv axles, front axle bearings, sway bars links, new shocks and possibly replace all discs and brakes. Engine and transmission are in good working order. Really enjoyed this video. Tks man. I hope you check my videos too

I have a '03 WJ Laredo with the I6, pretty much totally stock and I'm planning what to do with it. It's my daily driver so I don't want to ruin the on-road ride with a big lift. How does the 4" lift effect normal city/highway driving? I'm currently thinking a 2 or 2.5" lift so I can get 29 or 30" tires on it.

Have watched all 3 vids in this playlist a handful of times over the years and they're just as great as the first time. I've done Swansea to Cerro Gordo twice in my old '93 ZJ 4.0L, that is an amazing trip. Last year I replaced the '93 with a '00 V8 Limited WJ and have been building it up a bit and remembered you had done the OG long arm kit from IRO. Looks like IRO has replaced those arms with the Rock-Link 3-link system. I'm curious tho, who's rock/frame sliders were those? Love how they tuck up nicely.

Howdy, it was a really good platform. I don't remember where those sliders were from... not IRO?

Hmmm. Guess I'll buy the better ones from Summit. About to put newer manifolds on my old Dodge, means an exhaust relocate. Thanks for sharing, been there myself over in south park canyon. Ujoint died that day.

HaHa! To be honest ... when I was really new to 4x4 with this thing ... I did drag the muffler a few times on rocks so it did take some abuse before failing. Just want to give full disclosure. LOL Is that your rig in your thumbnail? Love those things.

I know, been there. Had a stock Ramcharger years ago, left a tailpipe and nearly a rear bumper on my 2nd time out going up carpenter canyon near Pahrump, NV. Been out on close to 50 trails just in my current Dodge now. I had done the 1/4 mile thing for years when I got bit by the off-road bug. The family enjoys this more. Just did Moab for the 3rd time in Sept. Love those trails around Balarat and up north too. Big Bear and Borrego area are cool too. Hope to see more videos from you. My wife got a good laugh, hope yours wasn't too mad. LOL.

It probably doesn't matter much since this was about 6 years ago. But it sounds like the transfer case chain was slipping in the rock crawling scene

Love this video man! This is exactly the type of adventure I look for with my 99 WJ. I've been eyeing that Iron Rock kit for a while now. What's your thought on the 6.5" kit versus the 4"?

Its reasons like these why I invested in a InReach satellite messenger. I can communicate to my family and friends if I have problems and I can call the cavalry if I have a serious emergency. One of my best pieces of kit.

not trying to talk shit because he is carrying more tools than I usually do. but this is why you carry baling wire. it might not be as good of a fix but you can wire the pipe up out of the way enough to continue

Rule #1, don't go 4 wheeling alone. Rule #2, You are crazy getting under the jeep with the stock jack. I've had my WJ fall off that jack on flat surface. Luckily I already had the wheel back on. Rule #3, Get yourself a ham radio license. Much less likely to be out of range of communications. How much faster would have you gotten out of there if you didn't run ahead and set up the cameras just to drive by them. hahah. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
