They've been ring barked/girdled to kill the trees. This can be done for a number of reasons. They may be an invasive or unwanted species of tree. Or it might be to offer a more diverse range of habitat for bird species in a nature reserve (I.E. dead wood for woodpeckers to nest in). It looks to have done carefully with a chainsaw by someone who knows what they're doing.

Yes it’s a forestry technique called ring-barking, which kills the tree by creating a break in the flow of water and nutrients in the living part of the trunk. It’s done to create dead standing wood which is great for wildlife as it decays more slowly than wood on the ground and provides habitat for birds like woodpeckers and bats etc

Fab video. I loved the time-lapse of the tree branches, stars, changing light & flickering from the fire. You had also chosen the perfect music to go with it. Sending out good messages of leave no trace & picking up some litter. A joyous film to watch as always.

@@illusion657 it’s called ring barking. It kills the tree creating dead standing for animals and insects to inhabit. It is done to improve the biodiversity of the woodland not to damage it.

Hazey. If you go to the vineyard in France you can buy a bottle that is not for sale outside Chateauneuf. It is bright crimson and comes in an original conked bottle. Best wine we ever tasted. Expensive but incredible. Yummy yummy

Two minutes into the video where you are discussing bags etc. Had a thought. Sure with your experience you could do this. What are the possibilities of designing a bag which when unpacked could be unfolded to form the tarp that covers a tent or a hammock or some such thing. You know the grocery cloth bags that fold into tiny tiny pouches? Invent and make some funds.
