In this video, I'm hoping to help casual Microsoft Flight Simulator players get acquainted with the new Cessna Citation CJ4 avionics update. It's a long video, but covers a lot of the changes that were made to ease the frustration many of us felt. My goal isn't to be 100% accurate, but to help those that just want to enjoy leisurely flights without pulling out all the charts and following all the restrictions. Not everything covered is going to be required usage, but included so you can pick your own level of realism from the info.
Sorry about the video quality on this one. I goofed on the screen capture and it was easier to make this one better than to re-record everything. This video isn't about the looks anyway. :)

Dang, information overflow... Something improved in my handling of the FMS, but I guess I have to watch this a couple more times. Thanks a lot! I wish they would build in some proper training missions for stuff like this.

Cessna CJ4 Video - MSFS. Hello there. Just a very quick note to thank you for your time and effort in compiling this video. You have saved me a lot of time and your advice has proven to be priceless. I was quite shocked when I first tried this add-on a few days ago and thought “Boy what a mistake I had made”. I thought I was trying to run before I could walk as it were. However, your lovely video, along with a number of coffee’s and putting pen to paper taking notes as I viewed your creation, I have just completed my first little trip (Newcastle to Brize Norton -UK) with this add-on with very little effort. This includes programming a rather complex flight plan into the FMS. The physics of this add-on run like a dream, and I now feel this shall be my plane of choice in the future. Many thanks again for guiding me to a very good base line so with each additional trip I can learn more and more. Keep up the good work. Kind regards Alan (ikarimedwayboys on MSFS 2020).

Hi! Thank you for your detailed video! I was watching it all first and then tried to make a flight from EDDB to EDDF with the CJ4 and managed to remember everything until the point I needed to hit APPR. So the last mark had a highest Alt. of 1670ft so I put the Alt to 1600ft but when I was just before I was going to land I pressed APPR but it didn’t do anything so now I’m back at your video trying to figure out what I did wrong hehe :D

For approach mode to work, you have to have the runway entered into the arrival portion of your FMS, or manually tune the proper ILS frequency ahead of time. You can fly the approach as entered into the autopilot or directed by ATC. When on final, you should start seeing the pink vertical path indicator come down as you get close to capturing the glide slope. When it gets close to center, press the approach mode button and the pink path indicator should switch to the green vertical and horizontal situation indicator diamonds. When you capture the glide slope, the CJ4 should start descending on its own, regardless of the altitude setting on autopilot. Hopefully that helps, but let me know if it doesn't.

Your take off weight and gross weight differ by taxi fuel consumption. At 40:00 that's the reason for the (small) difference in those numbers. It does a calc between the current GPS location and distance to runway start point, I believe to make the estimation.

I just delete the discontinuities and it connects it all once you hit exec, I do the same thing on the 747

Usually that works, but there's been a free times it hasn't.

I think you do not want to enable Yaw Damper (YD) on the ground as it would fight against your rudder pedals going down the runway. YD should engaged in the air and not enabled on takeoffs and landings.

I'll have to test this later. I haven't had any abnormal behavior with it on, but it was my understanding that it doesn't take effect unless the autopilot switch was also on anyway.

@@Nareimooncatt Okay.....but I am not sure the ill effects of improper YD engagement is modeled in the sim. But on page 3-2 of the CJ4 manual, AP and YD should not be engaged until 300 AGL on takeoff. Think about it. On a strong crosswind takeoff for example when one may need to apply extensive rudder, YD would fight against that application of rudder.

@@daywalker5458noted, but as mentioned already, this isn't meant to be a tutorial aimed 100% realism.

I just wanna know if and when we can open up the doors on this bad boy. This and the TBM 930, Pilatus PC-12 are the best planes in standard purchase. Let me get a thumbs up if you simulate boarding onto your aircraft!

There is a mod for it that lets you open the doors, plus adds a few passengers, cabin lighting, and a few other extras. It's on flightsim(dot)to under CJ4 WooselMod. I don't simulate boarding, but it was fun to open it mid flight and jump out. Lol

What I did……I had the CJ4 Mod WT file still went in to the CJ4 and renamed the Flightmodelfile.BAK and put in the Flight Model file from WT and wow it flies like it used to as in WT flight characteristics again. I went into the Engine file and changed the Fuel scalar from 1 to 0.75. When Sim Update 12 came I restored the files to what they were and updated. I still didn’t like how it flies rolls like the C152 so I went into the file again and created a copy and renamed by adding.BAK……The Flight characteristics file. Under Flight Tune Heading Deleted theirs and Copied the WTs numbers and pasted and pretty happy with it how it flies. And again changed the Engine file Fuel Flow Scalar from 1 to 0.75. If interested I can explain further. I sure miss the WT love to add these updates along the missing parts such as Check List, Cabin Announcements and FMCS WT page for Ground power, Sim Brief, Cabin lights, I wonder why it doesn’t have Cabin Lights?

I haven't put much time on the SU12 update yet, but the flight model does seem improved. I was testing other things yesterday, but it doesn't seem as twitchy. I can't say how realistic the flight model is, but I like it. On a related note, the Bell 407 also seems vastly improved, as I can now yaw to the left and not spin out of control. I think there is a way to trick the CJ4 cabin lights on. When the AAU1 update came out, I was messing around with the new features and noticed they had turned on somehow. It only happened that one time, though. I think it's related to arming the emergency light switch, then cutting electrical power in such a way that they turn on in response to some sort of lost power emergency situation. I haven't been able to recreate that situation again, but I haven't really put much effort in to it. Would be nice to have them back, though.

Yes they said it’d be lighter on the controls in some situations. On takeoff it’d roll back and forth rocking I had 50% fuel and 4 pax it was way too light on controls as in Roll. I found the Main CJ4 file under Official and made my way where the CFG files are and edited the Flight characteristics file. On Approach flies so nice by hand with the WT numbers.
