'A Catch' is a notable piece celebrating the restoration of Charles II to the English throne. The restoration took place in 1660 after the horrendous Commonwealth regime under Oliver Cromwell. Charles II's return marked the reestablishment of the monarchy, bringing an end to the Interregnum.
Cavalier poets, were known for their support of the royalist cause, and their works often reflected themes of loyalty, monarchy, and the celebration of the Stuart dynasty. The lyrics of 'A Catch' praise Charles II, expressing joy and relief at the return of the monarchy and the Kings health.
