Railgun has really cool powers because her power is not "lightning", like in many other stories, but the control of electrons. Among other things, she can build up electromagnetic fields to control metal or fire a rail guns. She can also control machines and she sometimes has touches of telepathy because the brain also works with electronic signals.

No alternate timelines, no portals, and nothing isekai'd. It's just that there's never a dull moment in Academy City

MC in the other OP does have an ability and they even show it multiple times, its just not flashy and if you blink ya miss it, he basically has the ability he can cancel magic or esper powers that make contact with his right hand.

"index", "railgun" and "accelerator" tell their own stories, but they often overlap and they play in the same world. In this world there is magic (which is kept secret) and esper superpowers (but only in a city where the superpowers are created and explored). You don't have to watch all of the series, but you get a better overview of the story. But it is sometimes a little difficult to keep an eye on the sequence of events between the series. For example, the first season of Railgun plays before and during Index 1.

You wouldn't notice even if flowergirl used her powers. Most espers don't have powers as obvious as the Railgun's. There are espers that are a living radar, others are telepaths, some can lower/increase friction, ect. lol

I watch Railgun 1 and sister arc first before Index and when I watch the OP index for the first time I was like "yo, there is magic here?, This gone be crazy"

There are two popular watch orders to recommend: - The Release Order which is Index 1, Railgun, Index II, Railgun S, Accelerator, Index III, Railgun T - Railgun-first Order: which is start with the two Railgun seasons then all of the 3 Index seasons then Railgun T. The second order isn't the one recommended by the author, but it has a bigger emotional impact since you learn stuff along with Misaka with many slice of life elements in between. Misaka still doesn't know a lot about the world so when she does learn something it's a bigger deal in Railgun... In Index the main protagonist learns something new about the lore/world every 4 episodes. So Index gives you better understanding of the world. Watching it first makes you anticipate the moments these info are referenced in Railgun.

All three series are happening within the same World, and during the same period of time. It's actually within the same year too, starting in July (although the Index Light Novels have now passed Christmas). The main four girls of Railgun are also middle schoolers, not high schoolers. Misaka Mikoto (the MC) is 14 while Shirai Kuroko (the Teleporter), Uiharu Kazari (the flower girl), and Saten Ruiko (the fourth girl) are 13. Uiharu and Saten also goes to a different school than Misaka and Kuroko. The city that most of the story takes place in, Academy City, is a city filled with academic institutes where people come from all over the world to learn, mainly being drawn by the idea of becoming Espers, as an artificial way of producing Espers was discovered by the city around 50 years ago (revealed in a Side-Story Light Novel set a year prior to the events of the story). There are also natural born Espers known as Gemstones, however out of the 50 known Gemstones in the world, only two of them are in Academy City (one of them appears in Index's openings, while the other one appears in the 5th opening of Railgun). If you're wondering about the chronology of the series, it is really complicated. Like, REALLY complicated. But, to simplify it, Railgun starts on July 16th while Index starts on July 19th (the first scene of Index is actually in Railgun as well, but the Railgun Anime replaced it with a mostly Anime-original scene). Season 1 of Railgun ends the same day that the second Arc of Index happens (there is like a 2 week time-skip between the first two Arcs of Index), and Season 2 of Railgun (also called Railgun S) starts between Arcs 2 and 3 of Index before running parallel with Index's 3rd Arc. It is actually the same Arc, but from different perspectives. The second half of Railgun S then runs parallel with the 4th Arc of Index with the final scene jumping ahead to the day after the end of Index Season 1 (Arc 6). The first (and so far only) Season of Accelerator, which only covers one of Accelerator's 2 Arcs then happens between Arcs 6 and 7 of Index with the second Arc running parallel to Index's 7th Arc (there is also a short four-Chapter Manga called A Certain Scientific Dark Matter which happens at the same time as the start of the first Arc of Accelerator). And if you're wondering what the Railgun girls are doing during this time, there is a Railgun Side-Story Light Novel (which a lot of people, myself included, were hoping would be covered by Railgun T, the third Season of Railgun) that is set during this time. Moving on to Index Season 2, the first Episode of the Season is actually an excerpt from Index's 5th Arc, and then there's the Index movie, Miracle of Endymion, which is set between the 8th and 9th Arcs of Index. Railgun T then starts just before the 9th Arc of Index. It is actually the same Arc, but this time that is in name only as there is a seven-days-long city-wide event that both Arcs are named after. The Index Arc is entirely on the first day while the Railgun Arc is mainly on the second day. Then the seond half of Railgun T runs parallel to Arcs 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 of Index, going into Index Season 3 (Index II ends with Arc 12) before ending I believe the day after Index Arc 14. There is also a Manga called A Certain Scientific Railgun Side-Story: Astral Buddy (Usually just shortened to Astral Buddy) which runs parallel to the second half of Railgun T. Then the rest of Index III covers Arcs 15, 16 (skipped in the Anime), 17, 18, and 20, which ends the first series of Index, also known as the Old Testament. In the Light Novels, the Old Testament is 24 Volumes in length, including two Side-Story Volumes that are considered part of the main series. The second series, the New Testament is 23 Volumes long, and the third series, Genesis Testament is only at 4 Volumes currently (I've acually yet to read the fourth Volume myself). As for Railgun, it currently has one finished Arc in the Manga that is yet to be turned into Anime (set between Arcs 15 and 17 of Index) and it is a few Chapters into the current Arc. We likely won't be getting a fourth Season of Railgun (Railgun F?) until the current Arc finishes. There are also a bunch of other Side-Story Light Novels that I didn't mention, though some of them we have no idea when they are set (one of them is a tie-in to the movie, though).

For some people, Touma (the boy with spiky hair or you can call him the MC of Index side) is really generic shounen boring character. But boi, he have one of the most, or not THE MOST epic character development. And evertimw he appears in Railgun, he just steal the spotlight of the short hair girl series. EDIT: And if you ended up in any kind of Toaru video, there will always be a hater of Touma or any character. And BOOM! LN readers comes in and start flexing their knowledge about Touma's sadness and epicness.

I personally recommend to starting watching it on Railgun Season 1 and Season 2, cause when i watched Index a long time ago before Railgun, I ended up dropping it, since it was hard to watch, so a few years later i give it a try to Railgun, and i really liked it. So I recommend you to start there to get hooked with the series. PD: I loved the reaction. It was one of the most anticipated reactions for me. So next you should check Steins;Gate openings

The conflicts in Railgun never reach a world scale, at most they only involve Academy City, the main setting of the franchise; on the other hand Index can sometimes reach a universal scale, at least as far as the novels go.

Also answering your final question, actually you can watch it in chronological order jumping between the three series, but it’s a mess, I don’t recommend it. Is better watch it in the order they were made (Index, Railgun, Index II, Railgun S, Accelerator maybe, Index III and Railgun T, and these two last ones can be altered)

Best parts of Index are when Misaka (protagonist of Railgun) shows up. Best parts of Railgun are when Touma (protagonist of Index) shows up. The absolute best parts are when Misaka, Touma and Accelerator are all doing stuff.

Memory breaking and shattering like glass, as it falls over him, trying to cause him pain and hurt as if the memory of what he did shatters over him with guilt and regret, trying to protect mini misaka at the same time as a redemption in sorts.

This series is interesting because there's not really one right order to watch the shows in (although I would personally recommend having watched at least season 1 and 2 of the other two before watching accelerator) I myself recommend watching each individual season of each show in order of release date that being: index season 1 railgun season 1 index season 2 railgun season 2 index season 3 accelerator season 1 railgun season 3 But that's just my personal recommendation other watch orders also work fine; although I wouldn't recommend any watch order that breaks it's down to individual episodes

In short Toaru Majutsu no Index is the main story, Railgun and Accelerator are side stories that focus on a different main characters, they happen in the same timeline in which some events happen at the same time, an order to watch them is Index I, Railgun, Index II, Railgun S, Index III, Accelerator, Railgun T. I think the biggest misunderstanding you had in this series is that it had time travel and different worlds actually it does not also Touma (spiky haired boy) does have powers the openings doesnt really show it but it is one of the most powerful in this series

If you would like to learn more about the shared universe of Index, Railgun and Accelerator then there is a video by Gigguk that you should react to. All of the animes exist within a shared universe, in fact part of Railgun is a retelling of a part of Index from another characters perspective, making it quite similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in that they are all seperate stories told within the same universe.

In my opinion, the watch order is Index Season 1 Railgun Season 1 Index Season 2 Railgun Season 2 Index Season 3 Accelerator Railgun season 3 This is just the release order. You can definitely watch the separate stories on their own with other context but I think its so much more enjoyable when you go down the series in a line. Even with this release order, the stories within are still told non sequentially so thats why I feel like having earlier context helps. And yeah the stakes get pretty high. After the end of Index season 2, I was looking forward to Index season 3 for a really long time since it was theorized that it'd adapt what I'm going to call the World War 3 arc.

If you watch it it supposed to be per season like season 1 railgun then season 1 index then season 2 and 3 of railgun then season 2 and 3 of index. In that order correct me if I'm wrong.

Certain Magical Index (Toaru Majutsu no Index) focuses on Kamijo Touma as the main protagonist, the story also more broad in terms of location as it stretch all the way to Europe and mainly dwells in the Church and magician from Europe. While Certain Scientific Railgun (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun) focuses on Misaka Mikoto as the main protagonist, the story is more centered around the Esper (ESP User), Academy City and its dark secret. Both story (more or less) happens in the same period of time and intertwined every now and then, both are separate yet still connect with each other. In their world, the Magician and Esper are like water and oil. Those who have their brain/genetics messed around and turned into Esper, can't use magic no matter what. Since magic is the power of nature, while ESP(er) are power created through science (in other word : artificial).

Ok so there are two openings for the game imaginary fest and I actually just found out there is a 2nd opening a minute before posting this comment and holy shit it is visually the best opening you'll see of this series so far. The opening does feature characters that only appear in the light novels and the game of course but the anime hasn't reached that point yet.

Both series can be watched on their own. I would advise you to start with Railgun, at least for the 2 first seasons. Since Railgun and Index take place in the same time, they have a common arc. And while it's well done in Index, it's an absolute masterpiece in Railgun. That's why I think starting with Railgun is so much better, you can experience the "cool arc" at its best. (Also Railgun is kinda just better, the Index adaptation is ok but in comparison to Railgun it's really not that great.)

Railgub Season 1 starts a bit before Index season 1. 1 and 2 are basically is similarly nplaced in the timeline, but it is recommended to watch railgub Season 1 and 2 first to get the whole picture After that, Index season 1 and 2, then Accelerator season 1, then railgun season 3, then index season 3. They are all in the same world same timeframe, no time or dimensional travel Railgun and Accelerator are characters from the world's science side, and their powers are called Espee abilities, which works off of complex calculation. Their perceive their unique abilities in a mathematical way, meaning that the greater their calculation and comprehension ability, the more powerful they become. Index is more focused on the magical side of the world's setting, though the mc, touma, is technically an expert perpetually stuck at level 0. This is likely due to his unique ability that is neither magic nor an expert ability that is called Imagine Breaker that negates all supernatural abilities that he comes in contact with, hense perpetually negating whatever Espee ability he would have awakened normally. The computer girl in railgun is Uiharu, and her ability is only level one, thermal control. Cold things she is in contact with won't melt and hot things she holds remain hot This does not have and combat effectiveness so yeah, she is a supportive. The teleporter is Shirai Kuroko, and the mc in Railgun is Misaka Mikoto, alias Railgun, ranked number 3 among Academy City's 7 level 5 espers. The fourth girl in the squad is Eaten, and she, like Touma from Index, is a level 0 Espee. Her potential as an Espee is so low that she hasn't been able to take the first step to unlocking an ability. She really wants to become an Espee, but without giving spoilers, near the end of season 1 Railgun Saten is able to save the day specifically because she is a level 0. Had she been able to reach even level 1 then the group would have died, and it is not some random act that makes no sense. Saten saving the day was foreshadowed and it made complete sense and I loved it. Amazing series.

Railgun and accelerator are spin-offs of Index which is basically the POV of what's happening in the story through the eyes of the other protagonist for example in index Touma (black haired boy) is fighting magicians to save academy city while in railgun Misaka(electric girl) is having fun hanging out with her friends unaware of the shit that's going on down the block lol. Also Accelerator is one of the 3 main protagonists of the Story first its Touma, then Accelerator then another character that gets introduced during index 2. And yes as many other have pointed out Touma does have an ability its just unfortunate the OPs do a bad job of showcasing it and it's funny that the railgun opening did a better job at showing it than index lol
