I never learned to play an instrument. I did do alot of singing when I was in school. From concert choir, were we performed around the holidays and at civic events I was also in a group called the schools Pop choir. Singing at charity events, shopping malls, and so on. Once we even got to go to Disneyland, and performed with school groups from all over the country.

In reality, the time around Christmas is one of the worst times of year for people with depression, and Charlie Brown Christmas is one of the very few piece of Christmas media which addresses this fact. I think that's one of the reasons it has so much staying power - Christmas isn't all presents and happiness for everyone

Several years ago I was in my local Hallmark shop when lo and behold, they had a Charley Brown Christmas Tree. It is just the slender stock with one red ball hanging off the top. No matter what else I did for Christmas I always put that tree out somewhere to remind the family what Christmas is really about. I have had trees so big it was all I could do to get them in the house and I remember one year as a kid my dad spray painted a tumbleweed silver but I have never had a tree I looked forward to seeing more than my little Charley Brown tree.

The Peanuts comic strip was from 1950-2000 (When creator Charles M. Schultz passed away). As you said, this was 1965. A truly classic strip, and this Christmas special is a must see for anyone. I grew up watching this, Grinch, Rudolph, and my favorite 'The Year Without a Santa Clause" in late '60s and throughout the '70s. Year without Santa Clause from 1974 is made in same claymation/stop-motion style as Rudolph. Great songs, funny, and a little weird-just like everything else in the '70s. This was a very charming reaction, Jen. To this day I always make it a point to watch all of the Peanuts holiday specials. Snoopy steals every scene in this special, he is hilarious. From decorating his doghouse, to playing the guitar, to mocking Lucy, and his famous dance atop Schroeder's piano, it's all great stuff. I've always liked the scene where Charlie Brown and Linus are at the Christmas tree lot. Linus' knock-knock on the pink tree always makes me chuckle. The music is the greatest, and how can you not love Schroeder's toy piano? It goes from being a concert piano to an organ! Thank you for this, Jen. I hope that you will make a reaction to "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", some day. To me, that one is the best of the Peanuts Holiday specials.

😎👍 The first four Peanuts specials "A Charlie Brown Christmas," "Charlie Brown's All Stars" "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" and "You're In Love, Charlie Brown" all have a slightly different ambience than the rest of them, because they were all done with the older characters. By 1968, Peppermint Pattie, Marcie and Franklin had all been introduced into the comic strip, and subsequently, they wound up being a major part of all the TV specials from then on as well, beginning with "He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown." By the way, to answer your question, the comic strip first appeared in 1950. Back then, it consisted of just Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Shermy, Patty and Violet. Most of the other characters you see in this special were gradually brought into the picture throughout the rest of the 1950s, culminating with Charlie Brown's sister Sally in 1959. The two newest ones in this special were Frieda (1961) and 5 & his sisters 3 &4 (1963). 🥜

When my daughter was a toddler and I’d GPS and brush her teeth, I came up with songs to accompany the tasks. For flossing, I used the melancholy tune from this show. The lyrics would be something like “Flossing time is here, time to floss my dear, don’t floss your ear, don’t floss your ear, you only floss your teeth.” I’d use other rhyming pairs like know/nose, dear/rear, etc.

Hey there Jen, "A Charlie Brown's Christmas" holds such a dear place in my heart. I try my best to watch it every other year and so far have successfully done so since 2016. There are numerous points in the film that I always enjoy but the things that I absolutely love most are the music (soundtrack), Snoopy's antics, the characters dancing during the play's rehearsal, and Linus' speech about the true meaning of Christmas. The "Peanuts", by Charles Schulz, was first published in 1947 under the name "Li'l Folks", then renamed "Peanuts" in 1950. In his biography, Schulz admits that Charlie Brown is his alter ego in the strip. Quickly off topic, Charlie Brown's unrequited love, "The Little Red-Haired Girl", was inspired by Donna Mae Johnson-Wold, his real-life first love. He met her working at his former correspondence school, Art Instruction, Incorporated. If you go to Wikipedia and look up information about the film, be sure to check out the trivia section. These two quotes below I vaguely remembered after all these years regarding sponsorship for the commercials that aired with the cartoon. I do hope that other people my age [57] can remember the sponsorship appearing when they saw the film initially or a few years after airing on television. "The original broadcast included some brief animated sections which included the logo of Coca-Cola, the show's original sponsor. These have been edited out of subsequent broadcasts and the video release. Right after the opening title, Linus crashed into a sign advertising Coca-Cola after being tossed by Snoopy. (Look at current versions and you'll notice that we never see where Linus lands!) The closing carol originally included the complete verse (instead of fading out) with a final on-screen "Merry Christmas from your local bottler of Coca-Cola" right after the United Feature Syndicate credit at the end." "The version of the special broadcast on CBS-TV from the late 60's until 1997 and older video releases are edited: they leave out a scene where the gang throws snowballs at a can on a fence. This caused a false rumor to spread that the scene was cut due to the can being a Coca Cola can (In reality it was actually cut to squeeze in more commercial time). The Paramount and Warner video releases are complete and unedited." Please review any of the Rankin-Bass stop-motion animation Christmas films. "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" are my top two faves. Thanks for bringing back some great memories for me Jen! 📽❤️

What a joy. I always try to see this, but some years it passes me by. Looking at it as an adult, I am astounded at just how perfect the animation is. It compliments the art wonderfully. I will always rotate in tracks from this soundtrack to play along with my other Christmas music. Or just let the whole thing play while I'm decorating, etc. Thanks for this *Jen.* Merry Christmas! 🎄

Vince Guaraldi was a genius. With this soundtrack I believe he composed some of the greatest Christmas music of our time! I especially love “Christmastime is Here” and the children chorus is so perfect and beautiful! ❤

Schroeder is so good that at one point, when Lucy is giving him a hard time about _'Jingle Bells'_ he makes his piano sound like an organ. That takes superhuman talent! :-) Merry Christmas.

Notice how they change the position of the sign on Lucy's stand to the correct order to show 'is in instead of 'real in'.

The production executives were not convinced a Peanuts cartoon with jazz track was the right choice, they were totally wrong.

I read every “Peanuts” cartoon, from the 1950s on, growing up. So when these specials aired on TV I was always watching. The humor of the strip is very much present for the Peanuts characters. They always were older than they looked and had concerns like adults. It made them relevant for a much broader audience. I think you’re right and that you can appreciate it more now because what you missed as a kid is very easy to identify with as an adult.

My go-to exclamation while growing up was "Good grief," probably because of these characters. 😝

Thanks for doing this, really enjoyed it. Charlie Brown was one of my staples as a kid and I caught the specials every year. Among my first books were paperbacks of the Peanuts gang, even some where Charlie and Lucy were younger than Linus and Sally at this point and the latter had not come along yet. At 4:52 when Snoopy is on Lucy's head, he is being a vulture. One of his classic moves was to pose like that on top of his doghouse while waiting for and watching Charlie feed him.

I remember first watching this as a kid and thought the song that begins this is sad. I guess its supposed to reflect Charlie Brown's mood at Christmas but as a kid Christmas was always great and sad things were the domain of adults. How great though as a kid to sit and wait for this to come on at Christmas time. Glad you reacted to this Jen.

Just watched a couple react to this who basically pooped all over Linus' recitation of the Christmas story. Came here for a palate cleanser. I don't know if you were raised religious or not but thank you for being so respectful. I just got home from Christmas Eve services and our choir sang Christmas Time as one of their numbers. Merry Christmas Jen!

My older sister had a lot of Peanuts books when I was a kid. They were collections of the comic strips that originally were in the newspapers and I read those over and over. This was in the 70s. A lot of the little bits in this were recurring things from the comic strips, like Lucy being the psychiatrist that the characters would go to, mostly Charlie Brown. Also, when Snoopy was imitating the different animals and he jumped on her head and you asked what that was about, one of his recurring personas in the comic strips, like the WWII flying ace was the vulture that was sit on his high perch watching and waiting. As a kid who'd emulate a lot of animals, I appreciated Snoopy vulture emulation. 😁 Anyway, anytime the Peanuts specials would come on, we'd watch them and laugh at just finally hearing the voices of these characters that we'd read over and over in the little strips. Yes, many of the references were for adults, and I knew that at the time, but I still loved the strips and found them funny even as a kid. I basically have this whole special memorized.
