As a chef and knife enthusiast, I'm usually pretty skeptical when it comes to knife sharpeners that aren't whetstones, but the HORL Rolling Knife Sharpener definitely exceeded my expectations.
I've always used whetstones to sharpen my knives, but it definitely took me a few months of practice before I was able to obtain a decent edge. The thing I love most about the HORL is that ANYONE can pick it up and get a razor-sharp edge with 0 prior practice. I'll definitely be using mine for routine maintenance for my 15 and 20 degree knives.

Finally. Ive been waiting on an objective opinion from someone who actually knows something. This sold me as a gift for many of my friends who have been gifted nice knives but cant or are too scared to use/maintain them.

the diamond disk wears wayy to quick, i have had mine for about half a year and the diamond side is already wayy to smooth to grind, not at all as advertised. i used it as you would, not on damaged knives and just for normal sharpening. i did use it quite a bit, as i have something like 15 kitchen knives. still, it is advertised as lasting a lifetime. not worth it

Uh… i use Horl for my santoku. The side is 90 degrees. Works great, and my waterstones are collecting dust.

What is the *cost* of Horl vs whetstones for a typical home knife setup? Crucial factor omitted.
@PaulEgan1
@PaulEgan1 7 ай бұрын
In the UK at least, two Naniwa stones cost about the same price as the Horl.
@Funglutton
@Funglutton 7 ай бұрын
@@PaulEgan1 in other words, for most people, 2x the cost is not worth it.

Depends on where you live, for me to get 2 decent stones and a holder, its about the same cost as the horl. The stones will last longer though. The horl is definitely at a premium because of the ease of use

would you use this on your japanese knives with zdp or vg10?
@patty.plates
@patty.plates 5 ай бұрын
Vg10 yes, Ive used it on sg2 as well. Havent tried zdp since the steel is very hard and would be faster on a stone

Would you say the additional disks and leather are worth it?
@patty.plates
@patty.plates 8 ай бұрын
I would say yes, if you are after a razorrr sharp edge. But you can achieve 95% of that edge with the standard diamond disc. I should’ve also mentioned that as you continue to use the HORL, your knife will get sharper because it may take a few sharpening sessions for the HORL to work through the “old edge” of your knife

my take on the rolling sharpeners is that the results are (slightly) inferior to somone with decent skill sharpening on proper stones HOWEVER what it loses in slight inferior results it makes up for in ease of use as the system is nearly foolproof so for someone who can "afford to" be good at using wet stones its not worth it but for someone who see's sharpening/maintaining their knifes as a neccesary chore its definitly worth it

Depends on the shape of the blade, if the profile is similar to a chefs knife it should work. Take my word with a grain of salt tho! I’ve never tested it on one

Why is the HORL not good for single bevel knives? Thanks
@patty.plates
@patty.plates 6 ай бұрын
Single bevel knives have a concave “flat” edge that needs to be sharpened flat on a whetstone and an angled side that actually has 2 different gradients that need to be sharpened with different techniques. The HORL won’t sharpen any side of a single-bevel knife properly since it only works at one angle at a time.

@@patty.platesshouldn't it be possible to create the first bevel at 15° and the second bevel at 20°? Sure it might take some work reprofiling it. But then it should be good

I saw a review that praised this product for the first few times of sharpening. After 4 or 5 times of sharpening the knife the diamond stone loses its effectiveness because it flattens out. Every time you make a pass on the knife the diamonds flattened losing its sharpening ability.
@czechvirusS
@czechvirusS 3 ай бұрын
That was the tumbler. This is the original which uses much rougher diamond side to sharpen faster and a ceramic side instead of a soft steel. And here you can buy extra discs if they ever stop working.
