Same with cats. A lot of people think cats can just be left alone, go outside alone in all weather, and basically need very little attention and is cheap. It's so not. It's only "cheap" if you're neglecting them. They need shots, attention, and yearly check-ups. They do not do well in freezing weather for long, if they roam free they get into fights and get injuries that you have to take to the vet to fix, and in most places, you really shouldn't just let them roam free due to potential dangers such as predators and traffic etc. A lot of people look at me like I'm silly for walking my cats on a leash in the garden vs. letting them roam free. But it really is safer for them. And I do it because I take their wellbeing and safety seriously, not because I'm some loon who is "imprisoning" her cats.

@@RouxHarbour You probably live in a concrete big American city, most towns and country you can have cats and not have anything to them happen. Cats naturally spend a lot of their time outside exploring and doing things, they can't hunt when they are on a leash, they can't stalk, they can't stand off with anothers cat by passively sitting on the other side of the road looking at eachother for an hour.

Often people say animals are expensive and they often aren't so like people say but I must say these days bunnies pretty much are. Because they not only need timothy hay and pellets but also need a variety of veggies and the veggies and vets can be expensive these days. But all animals can seem expensive these days. But rabbits and chinchillas still have nothing on horses on expensiveness. From the get go a horse itself can cost the same as a house ($15,000-$100,000 sometimes in millions) where as a bunny can be had for $50-$100 and chinchillas about $300. And those two can be carried by you to the vet a horse can't they need a horse trailer or home visit vet (and they charge you for the milage to your ranch). And that's not counting the carrier to show the horse and more. But yes at $5 a box of spring mix salad that is a day or two for one box, $6-$12 a bag of people food (2 weeks to a month), and the same for hay about that lasts a month it can add up and seem a lot. But if you're savvy blankets and toys don't have to cost a lot with a rabbit. Go to Dollar Tree or the like for blankets, towels, litter box, bowls and the like. Find places giving out free untreated wood and make your own toys and chew sticks and those things end up not all that bad. And if you bunny proof and maintain sanitation, proper diet well rounded, and enrichment you generally can avoid the worst of vet costs. It just may be that the food is the hardest when you are thrifty.

@@LilyAmongThorns yes I don't think Kennels (being in a strange place with strange people and smells) is good for animals but there are other options. Depending on where you go. 1. Rv or trailer camper and skip motels and have your pet. 2. Car trip and motels that accept pets. If you go a travel agent they can give you various motels and places that you can take your pets with you to and things I may have not thought of here. But planes are a bit tricky tho but they could go with ya but them in the live animal cargo hold ( tho I'm not too fond of that so that is iffy). And some depends on what kind of animal you have and where you're going. Like a place with bad case of bird flu warn against birds coming there. As with all things about all animals the greatest key is research, research, and more research!

Thank you for being so informative to people-- I don't care which animal (dog/cat/bunny/bird/etc), all animals take work and all species have their unique needs. There is no true 'starter pet' and it's sad how so many buy animals from shops, then get bored or get frustrated because they don't understand the animal, then release them to die in the wild or released into parks or roads.

Yup. One of my bunnies was abandoned in a park when she was very young. We think somedummy bought her for an Easter basket decoration and didn’t consider her needs. When I got her that Fall she was still not quite an adult, and fearful from having had to survive in a city park full of kids and dogs. I’ve had her now for seven years, and she is still a bit flighty but now loves pets and brushing. My other bunny was found with a collar (not a good idea) but you can tell he was a loved bunny. Funny thing, but no one ever contacted the animal shelter for him. He was an adult when they found him, and I’ve had him about four years. Both are fixed - there are way too many domestic rabbits running loose! Rabbits who are fixed live much longer. I hope they will live a long time - 12 years or more for spayed or neutered rabbits.

@@tana5098 hey, I'm a crazy rabbit lady. Buns and cats can get along but it is not recommended. Rabbits are very fragile. I can tell you that I've spent about 3000$ per year in vet bills alone for my 2 rescue buns. Had to change all my furniture so that they can't chew it. Gotta bunny-proof the entire house, which means no wires/cables around, no exposed baseboards, and you can never leave clothing on the floor. You gotta buy a lot of fresh green veggies for them to have everyday. Plus, if you live in the city and don't have access to farm-priced hay bales... one hay bale packed inside a box costs about 130$ on amazon.

@@thesecretlifeofbuns4336 quite right ! There are many people who have pets that care very deeply about them and would never harm them ,but the same people have no problem paying someone to abuse and kill animals on their behalf so they can eat them. It's called "Speciesism" very much like racism, it's discrimination on grounds of species, people consciously or unconsciously mistreat ,abuse, kill other species because they are different. Speciesism is a supremacist world view of human beings towards other species. It is the belief that other species are inferior and is used to defend their mistreatment and exploitation. This toxic mindset is ingrained in our society and results in misery and death for billions of animals. It is important to remember we are all animals. No excuse for animal abuse !!

Aw, they're soo dang adorable!! Yrs ago, we had a "female" bunny, which later turned out to actually be a male, so Lily was changed to Leo. He was incredibly fun and sweet. We decided to get him a female friend, Gwenny. She turned out to be an absolute maniac, biting him, and being a bully, so unfortunately, we gave her to a neighbor. Got a cat instead, and they were the best buds...sleeping on each other, playing, etc. She's right, they're adorable, but they're high-maintenance and expensive. They tend to chew on whatever they can get their teeth on, and they're prone to kidney issues, so they might not be the ideal pet.

Oh, I’m so glad there’s a responsible owner story here. There are very few animals that are "starter" pets. It’s so true what they say about bunnies. I fostered a bunny I found outside and had to learn so much so quickly. They need vegetables. They should not be kept in cages. But they will chew everything- so you’ve got to bunny proof the house. They can be litter trained - and that is messy. They need companionship and a partner. They need vet care. Having an animal is like having a child with special needs. They’re wonderful friends - but like any friend, you have to work at it.

Thank you for this lovely video. Your bunnies are so cute! And you are right to emphasize the lot of care, work and money it takes to have a rabbit. I'm head over heels for my little bun whom I adore. Even though he chews on everything and likes to do "annoying" things. He is free roaming. I love travelling and though I didn't really get on a vacation for quite a long time even before having my bunny, now it's even more difficult. I took him with me to my parents for a few weeks this Summer. I needed to get out of the city but I've never would have left my bun. It's a big responsibility having a little animal. It's like a child. Animal or human, it should be the same in terms of care, love and responsibility. My little bunny is my daily sunshine. He helps me through rough times and makes me laugh even when I'm sad. There is so much joy and love having a little bunny by your side! You just have to be aware of all what it takes to take care of him. As you said in your video, food, toys, vet, everything costs a lot. And as a responsible human parent taking care of your rabbit child, you also have to spend a lot of time with your bunny to keep him stimulated, healthy and happy. I wish more human had rabbits for which they cared properly.

What recommendations I can give to deal with the allergy: 1) Trim bunny's fur if it's quite like long ( mine's lionhead ), 2) Wear a mask, glasses and other protection when combing bunny's hair. Believe me, it helps a lot! 3) Vacuum every day ( we use a robot cleaner ) 4) Use special nose spray from allergy which cumulative effect. That's what I do and everything is alright! One reason people realize how much a bunny cost or care needed is because for years they were kept in small cages and their behaviors were muted. Vet care was felt to be minimal. Thank You for saving these Two BLESSINGS and giving them a life filled with love and happiness and safety and kindness. And Thank You for telling people about the TRUE part of taking on the life-long responsibility of adopting/rescuing rabbits. So many people think they just put them in a hutch and take them out once and while and that is that. Taking ANY Fur BLESSING into your LIFE is not 'cheap' or "simple". That responsibility is furever and you have to make many sacrifices to give them the lives they deserve to have. I have 3 Fur BLESSINGS now and I have not been on any kind of holiday in well over a decade. But I would rather spend my time with my BLESSINGS then leave them behind.

As kids, my mom and dad both made sure if we were gonna have an animal that we knew the responsibilities that came with them. Animals can be for children as long as the parents help them. Children don't automatically know what to do and that's when it's up to the parents to teach. I've had all manners of animals and with help yes, they were our responsibility. It's what I'm teaching my son too Also most little kids I know get bored of everything fast. Only thing my son has never gotten bored with.... animals. He loves them and they love him. He has helped feed and water them. Tried even helping with the litter box ( not ready for that yet lol). But it comes down to the parents making mindful decisions. If you know your child can at least try to have responsibilities that come with a pet, then give them that chance. If not then don't get an animal because it's not fair to animal.

It's always hard when you suddenly realize you or someone in your family has allergies to a pet. I've had cats my whole life and have developed an allergy to them now that I'm older. I use allergy Metuchen at home because I love my cats. But if it's a child, that's a harder choice.
