Why does everyone want to destroy this movie? Well with dumb lines, tacky dances, and Matthew Broderick, this one comes pretty close. Nostalgia Critic takes a look at A Christmas Story Live!
A Christmas Story Live! is a television special that was originally broadcast by Fox on December 17, 2017. It was a live, televised musical remake of the 1983 film A Christmas Story, and incorporated the 2012 stage musical version A Christmas Story: The Musical. The live musical was executive produced by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, directed by Scott Ellis and Alex Rudzinski, and starred Matthew Broderick, Andy Walken, Maya Rudolph, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Jane Krakowski.

I finally figured out why this special really doesn’t work. In the original, Jean Shepherd said childish things like the soap poisoning bit and the hierarchy of dares with a real seriousness and gravitas. He spoke as an adult with the tone of someone who still believed all these things, even though logically you know he doesn’t. He takes his younger self seriously because that was what was real at the time. This is how he saw the events he went through. Broderick says these lines like he’s trying too hard to sound childlike, like he’s reciting a story to little kids and talking down to them in the process. He sounds like an adult making fun of his younger self, rather than an adult taking himself back to a past headspace and living in it, which is what Shepherd did.

Eh, that's debatable - when we read novels out loud in English class, the students did it with such little emotion that the teacher literally said he could get the same results from a text-to-speech program. The reason the author was able to get so much emotion out of it was because... well, it's his own goddamn story, based on his own childhood, so *no duh* he feels passionately about it.

They should've set the movie in the 30s, 40s, or 50s, sort of Tim Burton-Batman style, where the movie is set in the 1980s/1990s, but looks kinda like the 1940s. That would have been the best for that film. The 2012 pop culture references really date that movie.

9:15 The reason he talks about the bullies like they're people is because they were. The book a Christmas Story is based on is a collection of memoirs from the author's childhood. They just modified the stories to all happen around Christmas and a few minor alterations. Scott Farcus was a real person, but he was Todie Greens sidekick, not the lead bully. They made Scott the leader for the movie because he had the more intimidating name.

what they should've done with the spelling test thing is cut to broadrick sitting outside his house talking about all of the punishments he's had over he years. then when the car pulls up he could talk about how this was the most terrifying of them all because he didn't know what would happen. THEN it continues like normal. and for the girl, they could do something similar where he talks about learning not to lie or something. but that would mean the special would actually be kinda good, and that's obviously not what they were going for here.

The problem with this special was Fox. Everything Fox added was garbage. The original Broadway production actually did a spectacular job at converting the original into a musical that was respectful and truthful to the original. Fox just shoved in a load of filler to pad the run time and cast a bunch of big names who couldn't even sing or act the material properly. Everyone involved in the original Broadway show was passionate about making sure at its heart it stayed the little family story everyone loved. Peter Billingsley (The original movie Ralphie) himself was one of the original producers of the play, as well as a good friend of mine who directed me in this musical when I did it. The most important thing to the production is a good actor playing Jean Shepherd. He is the heart and soul off the production. Broderick was probably the biggest of many reasons this live-show didn't work.

One of many problems I see with Christmas Story Live, in particular, is how the Old Man is portrayed. He's too jolly. He's supposed to be tough and grouchy, but with a heart of gold. That's why his character is so relatable, because most people have a father like that. Chris Diamantopolous is really good actor, having done perfect imitations of Robin Williams and Moe Howard, so he could've done a good version of Darren McGavin here.

The good thing about having the narrator unseen in the movie is that if we saw his facial expressions and movements on screen he’d look silly, but just hearing it sounds fine.

Me and my dad watched this and we both had the same problem with it. It loses all realism (music aside) that embodied the original so well. My dad was born in the '40s, he remembers his parents being the same way when he was a kid. Stern, though they loved him, and the term "wait 'til your father gets home" was meant to make kids straighten out and act right or they were getting an ass whipping (yes yes yes, studies and spanks are bad but this was the '40s we're talking about). The kids (especially Ralphie, being an eldest child), made him remember his childhood, from standing up to bullies without fear of persecution for standing up for yourself, or fantasies that far exaggerate anything mimicking reality, to disappointments that made you sigh and say 'son of a bitch,' without your parents around or you were getting the aforementioned ass whipping. In this, it rips you from the nostalgia - and tries to modernize it to make it 'cool'. But it was fine, perfect, just the way it was, because it was so real. I still laugh at the original father - because he reminds me of my own, some big authoritative 'hardass', but at the end of the day - you knew he loved his kids (seriously watch when Ralphie opens up that BB Gun and tell me the dad doesn't light up with him). What made the original great was that those who lived in those times remember it fondly, and those who didn't get a peak at it from a child's point of view (Yes I know the world wasn't perfect in the 40s, but from a child's view it's just charming).

The dad picking up the thing that fell off the door, having the tongue coming off the pole, and the dog not taking the table cloth aren't the only mistakes that happens in this live performance. During one of the fantasy sequences, the little brother forgot to leave and so he was still on camera with the dancers. You can see the nervous smile on his face as he looks off camera at the director realizing he messed up. And when both brothers jump out of their beds to head downstairs on Christmas morning, one of them hits the camera and you can hear them saying "Ow."😂

I would like to add another problem with the “ralphie attacking the bully” scene. It doesn’t seem like he’s actually hitting him. It just like looks like he’s pretending to be an angry monkey. In the original, he through punches like a normal person would. On top of that, you can hear the impact of every hit. Everything about it was done well and looked authentic. This looks like what it was, staged,

Matthew Broderick falls into the same category s Jeff Goldblum, they are the awkward nerds (except Goldblum is the awkwardly charming nerd, while Broderick is the awkwardly awkward nerd). Maybe it's just because that was the hero archetype of my childhood, but it never bothered me. Or maybe it's because I am an awkward nerd myself. It kinda hit peak cringe with Napoleon Dynamite and we never looked back.
@carlrood4457
@carlrood4457 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, Broderick's best roles are not the awkward nerd. In War Games, Ferris Bueller, LadyHawke, etc. he's actually a bit of cocky asshole but had a charm that made you love the guy.

The only thing I must correct is that Jean Shepard - the narrator and the author of the book that became A Christmas Story - was not just a writer. He was an accomplished radio host known for his animated story telling. And in the movie, he is basically telling his own childhood stories. It makes perfect sense that he does it better than Broderick!
@rturner09251
@rturner09251 6 ай бұрын
Yeah but you’d think a professional actor could, you know, show a little emotion and range. Broderick does none of that and they could have cast someone better for the role.
