There is something so saddening with these signoffs. This was really the end of an era for all the engineers and employees at these stations.

BBC One Northern Ireland was the most graceful shutdown (22:08). Clear information on the switchover with nice nostalgic graphics afterwards commemorating the history.

I imagined something much more like the entire transmission system going through a long and complicated shutdown procedure, but they really did just pull the plug. Me being fairly new to telecom hardware, I don't know if said plugs were master signal patches/jumpers, some kind of power connector, or whatever, but it surprises me that removing a tiny piece of metal was all it took to disable analog transmission completely.

Something about these types compilations never fail to give me chills, probably from something that youd expect to be forever unchanching, is infact, changing its mesmerizing and unsettling in that way and i cant get enough of it.

In Australia, the shutdown of analog stations was done after 9am, so during mostly national programming. As such, there were no signoffs like this.

The transition for BBC from analogue to digital was pulled off (as far as i can tell) really well, at least compared to here in Canada. Here, the transition to digital was *optional* and til this day we have a mix of both analogue and digital signals. Most of the channels brodcast in my area are actually analogue, and only the CTV brodcast in digital.

I remember seeing one of these analogue blackouts on BBC one when I was younger. For some reason my parents let me stay up so I could see it happen. I remember once the final switch announcement came and went, our TV cut to a static screen and even though I knew it was coming it still made me jump😅 the next day my parents went out and brought a new TV (we didn't know freeview boxes were a thing at the time). Honestly, there is a really creepy vibe about The Cave by Mumford and Sons playing on that old TV, with that low video quality and being stacked with others, and soon after it goes static. Also considering how dark the background is.

I remember the BBC2 NI shutdown, my parents were very stubborn and did not want to get a digital TV. They thought it somehow wouldn't effect them haha. When it went off after the announcement, it sunk in they must buy a new TV.

It is worth noting that Northern Ireland was the last region to shutdown, with RTE in the Irish Repbulic going the following morning. I have all the closedowns from that night available if you need copies. Also the full version of The Magic Box (the last programme put out by both BBC and UTV) in HD taken from a "hidden" satellite feed.

Going digital killed terrestrial TV where I life. First they introduced DVB-T, which was ok. Only a few years later they switched from DVB-T to DVB-T2, which was not backwards compatible. You also need to pay for most channels. Nobody uses that anymore. The great thing about analog is that everyone has the hardware to recieve it for free. If you need a new special reciever every 5 years and pay for it every month, why bother with antenna TV at all? Just watch a online stream. Same is happening right now with FM radio. They are trying (and failing) to push digital radio for years now. The only good thing about FM radio is that there are recievers literally everywhere. Every car, every mobile phone has a FM radio reciever. Everyone has like 5 things at home that can get FM radio. Nobody wants to go out and buy a special reciever that becomes obsolete in 5 years just to get radio.

It’s kind sad knowing that in 4 years from now satellite tv will be obsolete. I’ve grown up with satellite tv (since 2006) with my dads freesat that he’s had since 2005. It still works fine after 18 years of constant use every day since 05. I’ll be 20 the day satellite tv goes away forever and that makes me sad.

Thank you for this of course. Interesting to see the different versions in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales so too. Yes I know it is Northern Ireland of course, but I am sure viewers in the Republic there see it too no doubt. Also of course, this was BBC1 and BBC2 at the time. Although not here, I am sure that the other channels-ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, S4C and STV did the same thing too. Also aside from the British ones, I know the Irish ones did much the same around then too-RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 so too. I remember seeing a video a few years ago where they did theirs in 2012 at the same time as in NI.

I like how Northern Ireland was the most formal about the whole switch over thing, even with the video of them literally pulling the plug. The rest of the UK was either pretty blunt or they just switched the shit off mid-broadcast as if the ending of an era wasn't worth waiting for the credits to roll.

5:48 - This isn't actually correct, far from it. BBC One dates back to the mid-30s though for nearly 40 years (1963-2002), the channel used the globe as it's identity. The particular example shown here being the iconic 'Noddy' model (used from the beginning of colour transmission in the late-60s up to February 1985, though this specific version with the twin-striped BBC text is from the 80s) Sadly, I don't actually remember the globe because I was born roughly 8 months after the "Rhythm and Movement" set got introduced but I have watched a lot of old BBC One continuity videos from 1969-2002 on KZfaq so I am aware.

20:07 Ceefax did eventually come back after that, it just went off the air for a bit, but it eventually came back for the next 2 weeks before shutting down, which was also when BBC One Northern Ireland on analogue shut down as well, so you are incorrect on that, but it did come back for the other 2 weeks until it shut down on the 24th October 2012, the same day that BBC One Northern Ireland on analogue shut down.
