Hi guys, sorry this video is coming a bit late... I just started university and things are a tad busy. I'll try to stay to my one video per. month, and as I find my groove I'm sure I'll be back to our regular scheduled programming. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this comprehensive beginner's guide to everything timelapse. Timelapse photography is a great way to spice up any video project, and the effect is a great way to tell your photographic story. In this animation I cover everything from the definition of timelapse, to the gear you will need, to professional techniques used to create timelapses, and to the programs needed to take them from a string of photos to a smooth video. This was by far my hardest video to create (over 1000 layers in After Effects, 50+ hours from storyboard, shot planning, script, voiceover, illustration, b-roll, and animating, etc.), so I would appreciate a like (if deserved), and your feedback, either positive or negative, on this video. I really try and deliver top-quality content, which is why I only upload once per month. Once I get more comfortable shooting and editing video (this project was my first experience shooting s-log and color grading), I might release some run and gun style vlogs, and over the next few months I hope to develop more of a relationship with my awesome subscribers! Not sure why the first three seconds of the video were cut off... I noticed that on my previous upload as well, and it's not present in the final render on my computer... I will definitely have a talk with KZfaq about this, but thankfully it doesn't completely ruin the message of the video. @Fx Yep, this is my own voice now. I'll be doing my own voice overs from now on, and regarding the monotonous tone, I had such a bad cold when I recorded this that I didn't want to risk cracking or anything. Even compiling this together took so long editing out weird clicks and cracks that I just settled for a voice over that got the job done. Thanks for the feedback though, I really appreciate it.

Well, I've always searching a good tutorial for doing great timelapse and you grant it to me, i love you keep going you do some really good tutorial video photography !!!! I have a question, when you said we can adjust shutter speed when we are in manual mode, do you change it remotely or on the camera ? Thank you for your work

Aperture mode would rather introduce flicker than avoiding it, so it’s highly recommended that you use aperture mode to do the exposure test, to see what’s the proper shutter speed and ISO combination, then dial them in the manual mode, always shoot in manual mode, cuz you have a constant setting throughout the whole period of time provided the flicker is best avoided. This will also give us a good starting point if we are shooting day-night transition during which you will need to gradually change your exposure settings to follow up the daylight changes, and then smooth the whole sequence out in LRTimelapse

Sorry for the late reply. I completely agree on your thoughts on manual mode being the best way to shoot timelapse, although in a lot of situations aperture priority is useful, especially when you don't have the time/ability to control settings. In fact, with Sony cameras, there's no good way to do manual-mode timelapses since when you plug in an intervalometer it freezes the camera and you have to stop the device, change settings, the start the device again, which can lead to inconsistent intervals (maybe my camera is just broken but I've heard NO one talk about this!). Also, LRTimelapse can pretty reliably remove the flicker from Av timelapses, plus there are great plugins like GBDeflicker for After Effects that completely remove flicker. Another source of flicker that will come from using modern lenses is from the aperture diaphragm itself - between shots the aperture blades in the lens sometimes shift ever so slightly, changing the exposure of the images. In the end, you will probably always see flicker in timelapses regardless of the mode you shoot with, but manually controlling the exposure then using LRTimelapse is the best method, as you said.

This is an awesome tutorial, very well explained and detailed. I'm getting into timelapse photography and at the very beginning I was struggling with light changes and flickering. Magic Lantern is a very useful tool for this. Keep up the good work!

@@Apalapse I'm currently using a Canon T3 and a good old 50D, both running ML. I've seen Sony's Camera Apps and I think that for a thousand dollars camera, the less that they could do is give you full potential of the camera, not having to pay $10 extra, while ML is entirely for free. Dunno, that's just my opinion lol.

@@Wampiroh Yeah I was tempted to get ML because I didn't trust the Sony timelapse app lol; it kind of sucks. I had a bramper which plugged into my camera via. the micro usb then a dummy battery connected to a USB battery pack for my timelapses. Now, though, I'm lazy and just use a wired intervalometer but that means I can't use the micro USB to charge the camera while it's operating. I wish someone released a timelapse-specific camera engineered from the ground up, maybe just a brick with a sensor plus some really good timelapse software built in...

Good video! For rendering JPGs to a video file I use mencoder, which is a command line video encoder that can do all kinds of advanced stuff. Here's an example command with parameters: mencoder.exe mf://*.jpg -o timelapse.mp4 -mf fps=30 -vf scale=1920:1280 -ovc x264 -x264encopts crf=25

Battery grips/accessories are definitely helpful if you have a camera with poor battery performance. My Sony a7r2 which uses the old batteries can barely shoot a 2-hour timelapse on one, so I have to add a battery grip and sometimes if I am on a really long project I'll use a dummy battery adapter or just charge it through the micro-USB port.

Great video. Btw. is there a filter holder on the market which gradually adjusts position of a ND graduated filter as sun sets/rises? Just like a slider for the whole camera. I couldn't find something like that on the internet on my own. I think it can be useful.

Yes. I have looked into this, actually. The best similar item I could find was an ND filter adapter for my Sony camera that adapts certain lenses to Sony E-mount while containing an adjustable ND filter inside the adapter itself (see: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1041731-REG/fotodiox_vzlx_thrtl_eos_nex_pro_vizelx_nd_throttle_adpter.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&lsft=BI%3A514&gclid=Cj0KCQiAw4jvBRCJARIsAHYewPNvz8Kgeg-b8dRodYjyQ1gjrHztuAuPk5_lsLw3TcjcDytv7QTJjKoaAmJCEALw_wcB) The problem with this is that it cuts out about 1-stop of light even when it's at "zero ND" so if I wanted to do a day-to-night timelapse I wouldn't be letting in enough light to effectively capture the milky way or other stars.

Hi, Im travelling north to capture the geminids the next week. How long would you recommend the interval between photos? Setting my shutter to anywhere between 16-20s with ISO 1600 based on previous snaps taken

Hey, Derrik! I am sorry I am just seeing this now, for some KZfaq never notified me of your comment :( For gemenids I would just take normal star exposures and do the interval 1-2s longer than your exposure to allow your camera to process and save the files. So, given the shutter speeds you gave me, at 20s you would probably want your interval at around 22s, 16s at 18s, etc. Hope this helps and I hope you got some nice images last year!

Hi. Do you mean a "blooming" flower? If so, you could set up your camera as normal and just have the interval between subsequent shots be extremely long. For example, for a blooming flower, it would be appropriate to have a shot every, say, 15 minutes.

Hey, sorry for the late response. If you're still wondering, I would take the photos and import them into Adobe Preimere Pro or Adobe After Effects as a "JPEG Sequence," where it will take each JPEG and interpret the entire sequence as footage which you can then edit like you would a regular video taken from a video camera. As for your second question, I am not familiar with the framelapse app, sorry.

I'm really unfamiliar with Lightroom alternatives... but from my experience, most photographers use the Adobe suite, so that's why I chose to use it in this tutorial.

There were some examples in the video, actually, around 6:40. A timelapse is just a video of a particular scene, usually formed by speeding up video or forming a video from many images.

Thanks for the comment, and sorry for taking so long to respond. Yes, a cheap action camera will usually do the trick, but beware! Sometimes the "timelapse" mode on the action cameras is really just a sped-up video, and that kind of format will not have the same quality as a photo-timelapse will, so while it's really convenient, there are often some sacrifices you have to make on the quality-side of things. Umm, I tried to following up your tutorial but I’m getting lost. Half of these are working, other half of these aren’t working because all you did is too fast to follow up. Please try to be a little slow and give us time to follow up with your tutorial. Thank you

Hi! Sorry for taking so long to respond to this, but I just wanted to apologize, I didn't realize that the videos are too fast, still. I have been trying to make them clear and concise without drawing out the length but maybe I need to slow down and make sure people understand what I'm saying before I jump to a different subject.
