Anybody who regards these as "kid" comics are missing out on some the greatest writing and drawing in comics history. Carl Barks is a genius storyteller and, in my opinion, we NEED a lot more good storytelling in today's comics. The other great thing is after you've read Barks you have all the great Duck stuff from Don Rosa to look forward to and, imho, there is no let down in the art or storytelling. Thank you, Omar, for shining a spotlight on this man and his work. #OmarRules #BarksIsATitan

These were the first comics I ever read, probably around 1980. Pretty much my favorites of all time, too. And that's not just nostalgia speaking - I rediscovered these many years later when I bought some of them for my nephews. Barks' writing has a really timeless quality to it. (Still remembered pretty much every story you showed in the video, too.) All his stories have been printed here in Germany. Many times. I'm currently still collecting the HC editions divided by the original American series ("Donald Duck", "Comics & Stories", "Uncle Scrooge", etc.). A bit larger than an omnibus, about 180 pages each. Just the stories in those, though - not the editorials from the earlier "Barks Library" releases in softcover. I'd love to see you do the video on the Rosa box sets. Looks like we're finally starting to get these over here this year, too. About time I got more Rosa stuff - Barks is my favorite, but he did some phenomenal work as well.

I am 47 and read all of these in various forms 40 years ago, and now I read them again because the next generation still loves them. They have modern duck comics, but they also still like the old ones, which somehow still don't feel TOO dated, despite being 50 or more years old. Because the Ducks go on adventure all the time, you don;t miss modern stuff, the only odd thing that catches the eye is that they don;t have mobile phones

Great Video, Carl Barks has always been a favorite of mine. It's good to see his Stories live on in the US, because is Europe he is a Giant known by nearly all people and even if they don't know him they certainly have read some of his stories. By the way in the early 70s he did maybe 25 Huey, Dewey & Louie stories, which were most of the time Junior Woodchok stories, often dealing with environmental problems much ahead of anybody else.

Hey Omar. Thanks for this surprisingly interesting video. The dimensions of your Duck books look similar to my Transformers & Judge Dredd HC series from Hachette. Those are numbered but were also issued out of chronological order. Certainly a nicely assembled collection and those colours really pop. 😊 Some of this brought back some memories of my childhood reading Disney comics (before I discovered Marvel). Gyro Gearloose is a character name I recall. I'm sure some of it appeared in Gold Key here and back then I was also reading Archie, Harvey, Dell & Charlton comics (as well as black & white DC). Sadly I don't have those anymore. Props to the Astonishing Melanie for her great research. Keep up the great work mate 😊

I only had a couple of the Duck books, but recently decided to focus on them. Was able to connect with some comic shops with mail order to get the couple hard to find volumes of both Barks and Rosa and now will just grab up the couple more needed. For the moment I think I might just go through Trick or Treat and also not get Vol 1-4 when they come out. But I'll probably cave and go further. I'll have to do some research on around what year the one-pagers will start dominating the books. The Mickey Mouse strip had a similar trajectory.

The rolling boulder gag in Raiders of The Lost Ark was not taken from the Seven Cities Of Cibola story. It was actually lifted from a much later story called The Prize Of Pizarro. In that story the ducks had to maneuver through a series of booby traps. One of the traps was called the sickle of the short haircut which was designed to decapitate you. Another one of the traps was called the bridge of the roaring skull cracker which featured a rolling boulder. That's the comic that Spielberg lifted the gag from. I first read that story in the 1950's when it was first printed and still have the comic to this day. I knew even back then that Barks was a genius. Also I knew that Carl Barks was the name of the artist as far back as 1959. The reason I knew his name before anyone else did was because I had an aunt that worked at Western Printing and I asked her to see if she could find out the name of the good duck artist. She did find out who he was and then told me. She also took all my Uncle Scrooge comics to Western Printing with her and had them all bound up into a hard cover book, which was really nice of her.

It's really interesting to me that there is a Carl Barks Library published in greek since 2010, one year before Fantagraphics started publishing The Complete Carl Barks Library if I remember correctly. So, I guess it's true that this kind of comics is not very popular in the US (they are a HUGE thing in Greece of course).

Honestly, I could not decide one over the other! :) They have been done in different eras and I think they are both THE best in the eras when they have been created. :) I would say it's similar to say that the Jack Kirby era of Fantastic Four is not as good as the John Byrne era. Of course there is a difference story and art wise as well, but we must be considerate about when they have been issued. :) Just my opinion.

I grew up on Uncle Scrooge comix in the 70s, having no idea who was behind them - they were just "Walt Disney Productions". But they were clearly on a different level than most "WD" productions of the time: full of complex, morally ambiguous characters on globe-trotting adventures with plot-twists on every page... like the Freak Brothers for kids. Huey, Dewey, and Louie grew up into Franklin, Phineas, and Freddy

THANK YOU! I enjoy all of your reading order videos, but I especially enjoyed this one on "the good duck artist" Carl Barks. I think you did a wonderful job summarizing his career and life, and most importantly, based on comments, you are introducing a lot of people to his wonderful work. 1) Beyond the rolling boulder sequence, I think the character of Indiana Jones is heavily influenced by Uncle Scrooge. He always goes to incredible lengths to get a particular treasure in pursuit of "fortune and glory", very similar to Uncle Scrooge's pursuit of riches. But they often leave the treasure they worked so hard for (Temple of Doom) or something ironic happens to the treasure (Raiders). 2) I have most of the oversized books from Bruce Hamilton and Russ Cochran (Another Rainbow), but don't have the ones that collect the material from the end of Barks career. (It was good, but not magical like his work from the forties and fifties. More Beagle Boys and less exotic adventures.) However, I like the bigger presentation, the articles and the presentation of some of Barks paintings. However, only a few stories have color and the Fantagraphics reprints provide that. Cochran also did a very nice book that collected all of Barks paintings but you would need to donate a kidney to buy it (around $1,000 - see Amazon or ebay, "The Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck by Carl Barks". As a kid, I saw some of these paintings at comic conventions. I particularly remember "The Sheriff of Bullet Valley" which I probably looked at for half an hour. 3) One sidenote on acquiring the Fantagraphics books: Unlike the Rosa and Pogo releases which have sequential box sets, the Barks series is erratic, with some volumes not included in box sets and some volumes included in box sets twice. A minor complaint, which is offset by the quality of the books themselves, but the volumes are erratic on my shelf. 4) Send good thoughts to Fantagraphics owner Gary Groth, who is emerging from a bout with convid-19. THANKS AGAIN for a superb video that I plan to rewatch a couple more times in the future.

For some reason, the later Another Rainbow volumes, are pricier than the earlier volumes. (Because of lower printing numbers?) Interested parties can find most of the glorious early works, out in the wild, for reasonable prices.

So, first of all, thank you very-very much for this video! I hope you will see my comment because I will also have some questions. My love for "ducks" is going back to my childhood! Just as you have been filing through one of the books I have instantly recognized some of the stories which have appeared in Hungarian as well! I just started to smile seeing them..... :). About 2 weeks ago I have started reading the Don Rosa library and of course in the introduction "all" I was reading about was Carl Barks here, Carl Barks there. :). So I was thinking, wait a minute..... I should start with those first.... I know you mentioned that the stories are not really related, but still, it was always my obsession to read things in a chronological order. Just YESTERDAY I have ordered almost all the books what you went through in your review here, today I will receive them all. I have ordered the ones in Gift Box set, except Uncle Scrooge, with this one I am having problems! :( Vol. 14 The Seven Cities Of Gold is like a "treasure" and cannot be found at a reasonable price. :( There is also a Gift Box edition together with Only A Poor Old Man, but of course that as well is at stellar prices. Now, I have even forgotten, that I purchased Only A Poor Old Man back in 2014, so luckily I have that, but this Seven Cities Of Gold I cannot get! :( Also I am noticing, that even in the Gift Box sets they are not putting the books in order! Very strange, it looks like only Marvel cares about organizing properly their books. :) I would like to ask if you know somehow, that volume is Uncle Scrooge: Island In The Sky (23 Feb. 2021). By the way, Vol. 23 Donald Duck: Under The Polar Ice should appear 10th of November! Look at this lovely opening to your video.... all of them in order, would mean so much if they would have put volume numbers on them as well like with the Don Rosa Library. I can see that they are still going AHEAD with the volumes, do you have any information when they are planning to do anything about volumes 1-4? It's okay to post long comments. I read them all. I can't wait for volume 23 of Donald. I love these books. No news on volumes 1-4 yet. The books in the box set are the Disney Masters. Stories from different European artists throughout the years. I need to do an overview of those one day.

Hello ZsoltSchumacher, I read your post and if I understand this correctly then you are having problems locating Seven Cities of Gold (Vol. 14) for a reasonable purchase. I would like to point out that you can buy this volume right now and has been available at Amazon. The current price point at this posting is $26.40. I hope this helps.

Hi Michael! Hmmmm, why I didn't think about this. Unfortunately they do not deliver to the UK, but I will message my cousin in New York, anyway some Marvel books will arrive soon and she will send, so this could work out! Thank you very much!! Also I should contact Amazon.UK, why the heck they are out of stock and don't order some more from the US if they have! :). Thanks once more! Do you also collect these? How about the Don Rosa Library collection?

@@ZsoltSchumacher Hey Zsolt, I collect these in the digital format kindle books where kids can't wreck them and I have them on hand all the time. I have four Carl Bark books and no Don Rosa books. I am prioritizing Barks first. I currently have Only a Poor Old Man, The Seven Cities of Gold, Trail of the Unicorn, and The Pixilated Parrot (in order of my favorites with Only a Poor Old Man being the my favorite.) Do you have a order of favorites?

Hi Michael! So... it all started in 1997 when I purchased, well, actually my mom did after some convincing :) The Life of Scrooge McDuck in Hungarian! I loved that book so much! Since then in 2013 I moved to London and a few years ago I have discovered the Don Rosa Library books which I bought all, 10 volumes in the Gift Box set plus The Life of Scrooge also in gift Box set, the 2 volumes. Recently I have started reading Vol. 1 when in the introduction Don Rosa was writing a lot about how he was inspired by Carl Barks and how many characters this person created and so on, then I realized that hey, I have to get those as well!! :). Luckily they didn't appear THAT much long ago, so now I have them all, the Donald Duck books in Gift Box sets and Scrooge each book individually and thanks to you my cousin in New York has just ordered that missing Scrooge book as well, another one will appear end of this month and 2 more Donald Duck books (Gift Box set) in November! :D I couldn't really put hem in any kind of order, because I love them all plus I didn't read yet the Carl Barks books, only a few stories when I was a kid.

Thank you Omar for posting this great video. I believe you misspoke at 24:00 minutes as Flintheart Glomgold's first appearance "The Second-Richest Duck" Uncle Scrooge #15 appears in The Lost Crown of Genghis Khan (Volume 16). Again, great presentation and I hope you do more Carl Barks Videos. If anybody has an opinion on what order they think I should buy in then please let me know. (I already have: volume 8 “Trail of the Unicorn”, vol. 9 “The Pixilated Parrot”, volume 12 “Only a Poor Old Man”, and volume 14 “The Seven Cities of Gold”.) I am trying to decide in what order to pick up the following volumes: “Christmas on Bear Mountain,” “The Old Castle’s Secret,” “Lost in the Andes,” “Terror of the Beagle Boys,” and “A Christmas For Shacktown.” After your presentation I was really impressed with the art in “A Christmas For Shacktown." Besides that is the volume with "The Golden Helmet," "The Big Bin on Kilomotor," and "Statuesque Spendthrifts." In my opinion nothing can possibility beat Volume 12 but who knows! I am trying to prioritize Golden Years of Barks first. I hope you guys are enjoying Duck Comics like I am. Cheers!

I am looking for stuff like this: Bloom County (heard good things) Bone Calvin and Hobbes Donald Duck by Carl Barks Garfield Hate (heard good things) Peanuts (enjoy, but would cost a fortune to own it all haha) Pogo (heard good things want to get) The Complete Far Side Uncle Scrooge by Don Rosa I must be missing some classics?! I am interested in story, good characters, comedy and clever, I could care less about over the top violence, explosions, superpowers, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
