I would say that there's no one specific reason why the Crusades began. Alexios almost definitely would have been responding to the loss of Anatolia and simply wanted mercenary soldiers to help him recover that territory. The leaders of the Crusades certainly might have wanted to gain land for themselves but both the leaders and the rank and file soldiers definitely believed that they were doing god's will and believed the religious justification for the Crusades.

sadly ... now i started hearing ur podcast this channel needs promotion... job well done any how... 1st congratulations... this is a well balanced presentation i like to add an important point... that i discovered by accident ... but no one reported on the idea of the crusade.. or a holy war...came about by accident to Christians... and they discovered it inadvertently from Spanish Muslims...who invaded and occupied Sardinia... and even attempted to attack Rome decades before the first crusade the Pope discovered by accident how the cross could weaponized as Muslims did .. and once he succeeded.. he directed it to the east weaponizing religion or nationalism or race... unleashs incredible power.. usually fascists exploit it

@@FlashPointHx i am on episode 7 and loving it... now i researching omar ibn Hafsoun🤣.. how did i miss him? i thought what i studied in palestine about spain was Arab propaganda... until i went to Andalusia decades ago for 3 weeks... and talked to people on the streets of all kinds and classes they confirmed what u said 100%...100% look ... Muslim Arabs are new to Europe and America...prior to 1965 only few were allowed to stay... was it perfect in spain? of course no as you have characterized but can u compare with fascism? hell no Spanish nationalists lie big i went to the places u decribed in spain.. i was floored man.. i was floored... btw.. another important point plz keep in mind...Arabs used to fight each other (& still do) a hundred times more than the fight others which u correctly have proven by nature..arabs don't trust each other...else they will flip on them🤣 that is why they relied on locals and mercenaries...those are less risky... but u better pay them as u pointed out in the Punic wars🤣 cuz they didn’t trust their own people not even their families many thx for being fair ur channel deserves a lot more i shall promote soo peace man

It was more of a massive cluster of things very end of the Viking age with a hilarious surplus soldier. As history tells time and time again board soldiers and mercenaries do not end well for anyone involved. Also, the rapid expansion of Islam was a threat to Christianity and it was a Enemy of My Enemy situation,The Byzantine invitation for assistance was more of a formality. Initially it was a way for second and third son's to achieve wealth. Also the wealth greed and potential to go to heaven, self-interest, for all parties involved.

Well, commenting before watching the video, but the reason I think the first crusade happened was in reaction to the Muslim expansion. The byzantines asked for help and the pope saw a way to both stop the Muslims from taking christian land and gaining influence with the orthodox church as it would be latin knights helping the orthodox byzantines both retain their lands and drive back the invading armies of the Muslims. Heh, they get a real bad rep, deservedly so in some cases, but for the standards of the time they were a forward defense kinda.

Greetings Flash and well done as always. To answer why the so-named crusades began is a two part story. Firstly, why ask your frenemy for help. Answer, the Seljuk Invasion of Anatolia. Of course this is not the first time Islamic forces tried to force their way into western Anatolia, however the Seljuk forces were the first Islamic who could not be paid off or bargained with in classic land trades. Another important part of this is that the old Islamic nations and sultans could not control or appease the Seljuk as they followed a very hardcore and bare-based observation of the Islamic teachings. The Byzantines realizing that no help from their Islamic friends was forthcoming and that those to the north of Constantinople were just as happy to seize the capital that left no other great force of free men then those of the Holy Roman Empire. Secondly, why send forces? Answer, the greatest free land grab perhaps in western history. Urbane knew he could not control the many fractured groups of Christians or fractured nations of the Holy Roman Empire. The Great Church was also, due to these conflicting forces, in desperate need of rebuilding the coffers. By sending as much as 60% of the well trained and battle experienced men to the East, Urbane was able to seize up their lands, primarily by the creation of Knights Orders who answered directly to the Pope and not their nations King. Furthermore those who remained would be hard pressed to exist without the Great Church and thus were avidly willing to attack the last places held by non-Christian Kings and peoples in western Europe. There is truly nothing unique as to why the so-named Crusades began, what is most unique rather is what happened when all those newly war minted and rich Knight's Orders came home and plumped their individual factions, such as many may remember from the Order of the Knights of the Temple (Templar Knights) who over the next 100 to 200 years would become the single most powerful and richest collection of men in the Holy Roman Empire, west and east.

Wow what an awesome response! There were aspects of what you said - especially about the Seljuk - that is new to me. Didn't realize that they were so devout. Reminds me of the Almohad that would take the Iberian Peninsula by storm. Thank you for sharing this!

You are as always most welcome, as for the Seljuk, it would be more appropriate to see the Turkic Peoples, as after a few sultanates passed among the Seljuk they also forsook the teachings and lapsed into typical noble behaviors. This is essentially what allowed the Mongols to ravage the territory and created the Rise of the Ottoman, also Turks who held beyliks (margraves) in Anatolia under the Rhone Sultanate, and subsequently defeated the mongols, byzantines and Seljuk to found the Ottoman empire.

Well to be honest, I'm creating a pretty serious narrative that covers the rise of early Islamic Conquest, The Reconquista, and the Spanish Monarchy. This episode is simply a bonus episode to give my listeners an idea of what was going on, on the other end of the Mediterranean. So it was meant to be short and to the point. Take a look if you get a chance. Either way, I hope you find what you are looking for

I think the Crusades happened because the Catholics saw an opportunity for land and because Alexios needed help to deal with the Sultanate of Rum since he was defeated at Dyrrhachium in 1081 and lost most of his Varangians. Also, the picture at 4:30 is of Ioannes/John II, Alexios' son, not Alexios

The cause of the crusades is the Papacy imo. The papacy had long since abandoned the Romans in favour of geographically closer powers who could offer better protection to the point it would steal Rome’s legacy as a gift to trade for favour. “Bestowing” Roman legitimacy would be a focal point toward the papacy’s grand vision of being kingmakers and able to dictate military affairs. The first crusade was the heavy undertaking of an incredible opportunity to set this precedent. The crusade’s big winner was the papacy with the only obstacle being the real Roman Empire who’s competing Orthodox Christianity and legitimate title would dilute the effectiveness of their grand objective. The legacy is evident today with the strength of the Catholic Church and our Western, Christian dominated history is why we are taught Byzantium instead of Rome and most westerners harbour racial supremacy mindsets without even realising. Eg) more people seems surprised the east was stronger than the west over the ages, Egypt was the economic powerhouse of Rome, the Islamic Calaphate housed many scientific breakthroughs including the numbers you see on your phone.

how do you know which historians tell the truth and which lie ? clearly to me christian historians would "side" with Christian nations and the same with Muslim historians so how do you know where the truth is ? . the saying "history is written by the victor" is hated by historians but human nature condone it .

This is THE question that anyone who gets into history must ask. Always being critical of the sources and questioning what you have in front of you is important. In the end there is always going to be bias in the report. I've found that the more that one reads - and looks into opposing view points is the path that gets one closer to the truth.

He expected a small contingent of professional troops to fight within his army and under Roman command. Instead the bishop of Rome gathered all the illiterate barbarians and peasants in Western Europe. They were led by greedy and opportunistic barbarians like Tancred and Bohemund, who had no intention to actually help the Romans, and they eventually all broke their oaths to Alexios Komnenos. The Western barbarians only wanted to expand their own domains to the detriment of the Romans.

Greed definitely was a motivation for most in this - including the Pope who sought his own glory. But Komnenos (you meant Alexios I correct?) really only wanted a few mercenaries - Urban II turned this into an armed pilgrimage based on what prior popes had done in Hispania. Based on that there were a bunch of other motivations to go on a spiritual journey for some - readily coming to mind was Godfrey of Bouillon

@@FlashPointHx Yes, Alexios. I don't know why I typed Manuel. I don't think that the leaders of the Crusades were motivated by religious ideals as much as they were motivated by more earthly and achievable goals, and by personal ambitions like conquest and power. Certainly there were pious and even fanatical individuals among them, especially in the later Crusades (King Louis IX comes to mind who was like a Catholic taliban), but I believe that rulers and leaders back then were just as realistic and pragmatic as they are today. Their actions speak for themselves. The Crusaders broke their oaths to the Emperor and kept cities like Antioch for themselves, as you already know, founding their own Principalities and kingdoms in the Middle Orient, the so-called Crusader states. When the Romans took Nikaia through diplomacy the Crusaders raged because they weren't able to plunder the city or take it for themselves. The atrocities and looting they commited when they took cities like Antioch for example, and ultimately Jerusalem, butchering thousands of Christians, are always glossed over in Western historiography. As are many other aspects of the Crusades and Western/Latin society in general. Western historiography is heavily biased and "Western Eurocentric" to the point where Eastern Orthodox nations like "Byzantium", Kievan Rus, Bulgaria, the Romanian states, etc are rarely considered European and reduced to mere footnotes of history. The Eastern Roman Empire was too big to write out of history so it is instead spifefully called "Byzantine" to this day and consistently portrayed as decadent and despotic, perfidious and alien, etc. Scholars who deviate from this tradition of interpreting history are discredited or criticized, like Runciman during his day. But I digress. I'm certain that our views are diametrically opposed.

The Christian Knights “Rampaged, pillaged, burned and slaughtered” their way thru the crusades. The Muslim warriors “Rampaged, pillaged, burned and slaughtered” their way thru their conquered lands, yet no mention of this here. Or maybe that’s coming up later. A neutral view on historical events is always preferred over a biased one sided view.

Abu, good point -- though the Crusaders haven't even hit the lands of the Rashidun Caliphate yet. However, Christians, Muslims, Tengrists, Zoroastrians, Hellenic Polytheists, Jewish (maybe) Khazars, and heck... even the Norse had occurrences of "rampaging, pillaging, burning and slaughtering" in Anatolia throughout history. To Joefish: balance isn't needed, this isn't a propaganda piece, it's presenting history as it happened within a certain editorial scope. Just as Flash Point responded, if you want to see muslims doing the atrocities, there are plenty of videos about those stories in history.

Nathan Barnes Well said. Many peoples of different faiths or origins pillaged. But Christians were supposed to be on a pilgrimage and not on a campaign to pillage. Pillaging would make their pilgrimage a total hypocrisy. Sometimes history has a way of showing us what was truly in a man’s heart. I’m not looking for historical balance just for the sake of balance. I’m looking for historical truth. A balance of truth.
