Agreed. He has an iconic, easy, simple, gentle and deep voice and delivery. He doesn’t over-try or skip ANY simple details (that is, he does t take short cuts, or ASSUME the listener is an idiot or does not care). He is great at being a translator for science.

Neil would probably be the person in the whole world i would prefer to sit and have a conversation with. He has a way to explain things (and not bragging or beeing arrogant),, but rather make you understand it yourself and feel good about yourself.

I had recently gone on a trip in Gujarat, India and there were soo many stars there because we were staying near a village locality. I even laid down with my sister on the grass and we made our own constellations and it felt so good. I mean I totally get it how all our ancestors made these constellations considering they used to spend their entire evening and night gazing up at the sky in the open. Also I read all about the constellations and this video was just a recap of what I thought too about the constellations changing with the era and Sagittarius being shown as a centaur rather than a teapot and this talk really piqued my interest.Thanks❤️

Grew up in the northern hemisphere, The Netherlands, until age of 25, and already over 30 years I do live in the southern hemisphere, Brazil, and I can confirm it is much more impressive here. Get over it Neil!

Always love your programs and thought I'd like to share my favorite bedtime story my Mother used to tell...knowing it by heart, I recited it to my daughters, too. It's a Robert Lewis Stevenson poem called Escape at Bedtime. The lights from the parlour and kitchen shone out Through the blinds and the windows and bars; And high overhead and all moving about, There were thousands of millions of stars. There ne’er were such thousands of leaves on a tree, Nor of people in church or the Park, As the crowds of the stars that looked down upon me, And that glittered and winked in the dark. The Dog, and the Plough, and the Hunter, and all, And the star of the sailor, and Mars, These shone in the sky, and the pail by the wall Would be half full of water and stars. Much agreed, the nothern skys and gorgeous, I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, many clear nights I see a excellent view of the milky way , and the constellations are extremely visual , I live a hour at least in any direction from a city and those cities are dark, so few street lights . I grew up near detroit, this is the most amazing place I have ever lived , I yet still dream to see a nothern Canadian, or Alaskan sky

In 20 minutes I learned more about my southern hemisphere night sky than I have ever known. Especially the weird names of our constellations and how they got their names. Most importantly I found out that my piano has 88 keys. I never knew that either but if you learn one new thing a day then it's a good day...

Dear Neil, first off, thank you for your constant efforts and amazing success in popularizing science! Could you explain the physics behind the mistery of CORAL CASTLE and Ed Leedskalnin "magnetic current" concept. A number of enthusiasts have reproduced his non-scientific self-described experiments in the pamphlets he left. One of those videos that is posted on KZfaq uses smoke (maybe cigarette) to demonstrate that magnetic current concept [explained by some as semi-perpetual? even if that oxymoron doesn't make sense]. Another video talks about Ed's "perpetual motion holder" and the fact that it remains capable of lighting a lightbulb after 6 months or even years. It would be nice to understand why we cannot use Ed's inventions that gave him the energy/leverage to move tens of tons of stone blocks on his own, to build new types of batteries, let's say. Thank you!

Thank you so much for making this video. I was going to email you to get a scientific view on this as well as your storytelling perspective. Everything I find on the internet is trying to sell me snake oil and there is too much light pollution where I live to make sense of ancient star charts. Orion and the bull plus Ursa major and some of the eagle is what i can manage to recognize from my front door. I would love the histories on these kind of things as even a little branch. Just me, but again thank you so much.

There's one I used to enjoy looking for in the Norhern Hemi, which can only be view by using a telescope referred to as the Coat Hanger. Which even if they had telescopes in the days of old, because the coat hanger didn't yet exist, would have gone unnoticed.

the southern cross is actually made up of 5 stars not 4. its the constellation on our flag, the Australian flag. The New Zealand flag only uses four of those stars, but it's the same constellation.

In a town in Colorodo there is a town which has hoods on the street light to reduce light pollution they use the light of the milky way at night. The hoods makes the light shine down amd not up.

They're just mnemonics, ancient cultures couldn't just write stuff down in a notebook so they taught the you to learn the stars by stories. Stars, solar cycles and lunar cycles were very important to ancients for religious reasons, for seasonal and agricultural festivals for dating systems etc. The zodiac of Hellenistic society which we retain today stemmed from the Babylonians Mul Apin (star charts) and have some of the exact same zodiacal characters

It's takes ether for hallucinations with absinthe, so I think this is why old philisophers, literature etc refer to consciousness and knowledge in the ether. The ether in place of both literal and figurative of represents the electromagnetic forces in which we are bound.....

The importance of the Southern Cross is the top and bottom stars point to due south no matter what postiton in the sky it is, making it a useful tool for mariners for centuries.

Orion is upside in the southern hemisphere, particularly Australia and New Zealand. It's nickname is sometimes the tea pot or saucepan.

If Orion is upside down in the south, and right side up in the north, at what latitude does he flip? Is he seen sideways at any latitude?

This is a really good question. I had the same thought once. The thing is Orion is seen looking south in the northern hemisphere, and north in the southern hemisphere. Suppose I'm in the northern hemisphere. I need to look south to see Orion. As I move south ("towards him") Orion moves higher in the sky. I continue moving south, at the equator Orion is at my zenith, the spot basically directly above me (not all constellations are above the equator, but Orion (among others) is.) As I move south (now I'm in the southern hemisphere) Orion is still moving in the same direction, ("up") though it crossed my zenith and now moves down (in the northern part of the sky now. Since it's in the opposite part of the sky what used to be up is now down and vice versa. You can get a feel of what I'm saying by spotting Orion, turning around (so your back faces him) and raise your head as much as you can so you can see him from the opposite direction. He'll be upside down. Putting it simply, moving south, he moved up in the sky so much you have to turn around to see him now.

I've told people that have said the Southern sky is better that they need to go to the SW US or somewhere like Utah where's less light pollution then come back and tell me what they think. Almost to a one they're amazed! Of course, I'm also one of those that climbs out of bed at 2 am to go take pictures of the night sky.

I don’t get most constellations. I recognize The Big Dipper and Orion’s Belt, but most constellations seem so extremely loosely contrived from so few points that they don’t make sense to me.

Neal was not wrong with his meaning of « ZODIAC » but the mention of the « 3 first letters » was a gaffe. The word « ZODIAC » comes from the Greek, meaning « ANIMAL CIRCLE », a good definition of the night sky.

Orions feet always point south. When rising in the west the feet point south west, than due south, than south east. It's one of the easiest navigational constellations

'Zoidiokos Kyklos' means 'cycle of the little animals' And to some of the ignorant commenters, the zodiac is not astrology or religious, the zodiac are the very real stars of the constellations that remain along the very real line of the ecliptic.

Light pollution is common in Canyons When viewing by telescope 🔭 from the bottom base floor ⬆️ up once I discovered this at Paladouro canyon close to Amarillo Tx. I kept checking my lens cover Is on . The stars ✨ were clear by eye 🤷‍♂️

our disconnect with the night sky is less to do with light polution, and more to do with tech exposion and lifestyle. plus these days going out at night with a telescope, is a sure way of getting mugged. raf and navy personel were given books with constellations during ww2. just in case they got lost. now everyone has gps.

For you Mr. Tyson why is everything related or relating to being round in the universe an here on earth are eyes head legs arms toes the whole body, and everything that surrounds us why what is it the makes round O so damn special, there is more behind it then I think we know that just may answer all the questions we've been looking for, it's right on the tip of are tongue but we don't noticed, I don't know but probably 99.1% of everything is round but the big question is why from the smallest Organisms to Adams,, what power does thus hold that we don't know or realize, anyway just one mind now an then but can't rap my head "around" it ✌️🖖
