I never understood why it is seen as acceptable to regularly work over 40hrs a week in certain industries like healthcare, trucking, teaching etc The human body and human needs are the same no matter your profession. You need balance, rest, play etc. to do a good job. Anything over 40 starts getting counterproductive and downright dangerous in my opinion.
@tiahnarodriguez3809

Anything over 40 needs to be fairly compensated. It comes down to companies not seeing their employees as human.
@thom_cat8883

Actually there's scholarship showing that even 40 hours per week is entirely too much. Something around 25-30hrs per week is much more reasonable and humane. Our conceptualization of work is so warped in this country, it's unreal.

As a patient I don't want someone who has been awake for 24 hours working on me. I worked in IT for 35 years and we had a rule, you go home after 12 hours because you get stupid when you're tired. 2nd shift takes over fresh. When we had a crisis we would send half the staff home to rest so they could come back and relieve the people who stayed on site. As far as pay goes, yes you should be paid minimum wage. But cost of living in NYC is way higher than Buffalo so not quite fair to compare salaries in the 2 areas.

The old school types who oppose fair pay/better work conditions for residents conveniently forget their colleagues who burnt out, turned to substance abuse to cope, or quit. Also very different when medicine was mostly male, so MDs often had a stay at home spouse who took care of everything else.

They should be paid fairly. Times change and pay should reflect those changes. This happens with teachers to. Teachers try to talk about working more than our contracted hours and being paid more, but several people in the public don’t seem to think we deserve to be compensated fairly. We’ee supposed to be happy with what we have.

Everyone deserves to be fully compensated, especially when the economy changes. Bottom line it’s selfishness because you know these business makes more than enough to fairly pay employees, but they don’t want to because they don’t value labor even though labor is what keeps these businesses functioning.

The Buffalo residents should be getting the same pay as other residents in NY state. As for people complaining that the residents should be greatfull for a job, they have to realize 80 hours a week is exhausting and these residents probably have student debt to repay.

RN of 30 years here. I’ve always been appalled at the hours Residents were expected to work and the paltry compensation they received. They are physicians with many of education and are being held to the same standards as independently practicing ones and should be compensated accordingly- considering their level of experience of course. New RNs generally work for the starting salary but their education and licensure is taken into consideration.

Hi Dr. Dray, I am a medical student about to enter residency and I am also super interested in the topic of resident pay/work hours. I think the issue that the older physicians don't realize is that now with documentation and other major changes to the hospital system, the work that residents are doing is largely tedious scutwork that does not offer learning opportunities, such as writing discharge summaries, calling pharmacies, etc etc. so the 80+ hours that we are working is not the same type of work as the older generations, who had the opportunity to perform lots more procedures and spend more time at the bedside actually learning during those hours. I think that many residents would actually be happy working these longer hours with lower pay if they felt that the work they were doing was meaningful rather than mindless.

This is similar to what my relatives, who were Physical Therapists, expressed as they neared and entered retirement. They spoke highly of their job and would encourage me to consider working in the medical field, even as a CNA- but that was in the early 2000s. Come to 2020, and they hated their jobs. The documentation, regulations and productivity measurements were out of control. They became disenchanted as they interacted less & less with patients - and more time running back to the computer to input data. Glad I avoided it!

I have a friend who has been out of residency for about 4 years. He's a surgeon. He hates it. The hours are not sustainable. He always says that everyone who told him to become a doctor was like "Oh the money, the money is so good." He always replies with "I have yet to see any of that money, and I have no social life because of my work schedule." He's also 400k in school debt.

I loved your impression! Those residency hours have to go. I've been close to several docs who told the stories, and not sleeping and lacking self care aren't the only bad habits this encourages. It's heartbreaking. I'm someone with Autism, yet some of these doctors have less developed social skills than I have simply because their entire lives were emersed for many formative early adult years in a hospital. Residencies need set times for socializing, good pay, and if they're not going to pay enough for housing, they need to provide for the residents. Patients come, insurance pays...someone is getting the money those residents are working so hard for. It is certaily across the board. Everyone deserves enough to have a life from money to time to compassion of all kinds. Only in this way can we truly be the best we can be for others, whether you're a janitor, a doctor, a housewife, an artist, teacher or a baker. I'm glad to hear things are improving for residence, but from what I understand, they have a long way to go. I've never thought a doctor's ability to stay awake for days added anything to their ability to treat me.

I almost become a doctor then decided against it. NO time or raising my child, long hours, paying back debt, no social life, tired all the time, etc. I just can't see the joy in it unless you're a workaholic and don't have kids or a spouse. 😐🥴 My aunt was an RN for 50 years. I seen how it aged her fast. Needless to say I don't regret deciding against being a doctor. I'm glad.

Dr Dray, Your bow-shaped hairstyle with the tortoiseshell glasses is a super look for you. I enjoyed wearing this hairdo the 90s, as a guest on the opening night of the "Buddy" musical. (I looped & pinned a section of my hair to make the middle of the bow though). I remember I wore a purple pure silk strapless party dress. It was a really fun night. I ended up getting my photo in the newspaper, sitting side saddle on a motorbike that was parked in the foyer of the theater! I also had the honour of meeting Maria Elena, the widow of Buddy Holly. She was very charming. I see that she is still alive at the wise age of 91, living in Dallas. 👱🏻‍♀️❤️ 🎀

thank you for bringing up the struggles residents go through. This is not controversial at all. Residents are getting paid less than minimum wage and are barley living pay check to pay check. Mind you this is residents that dont even have children. I know many residents with children and they arent making it pay check to check. I know a single mother resident who is a widow and she is on the verge of breaking down. She cant afford child care and the salary she makes unfortunately doesn't qualify her for any governmental assistance, so she is worse off than a fast food worker. There needs to be a huge change for resident pay. It is truly unfair. The government can fund 2 wars, send out multiple rounds of stimulus checks to americans, but cant pay its residents pay that they deserve?

Residents should absolutely make more than they do! Barely being able to make ends meet financially is BS for people who have sacrificed decades of their life learning to help people. You are sacrificing your life. You should be adequately compensated. Also the carrying patients on their backs in the snow was hilarious and truly sounds accurate to things I’ve heard people say lol

When I was a med tech in a NICU in mid-seventies, the residents were on call every three days. If they got to sleep, it was never a full night since lab rounds (blood gases) were every few hours plus chasing the babies that need need their vent/oxygen settings changed. I think they made less than 40,000$ a year. I agree that those residents in NY should get paid at least minimum wage. 60,000 isn’t enough to rent a place, pay utilities, run you car, and buy food. Especially, if you have a family. Many of them are starting their families. I’m all for more money for residents. Most hospitals make huge profits and their CEO’s get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

I’m an avid Gardner, so maintaining a yard is a stress-relieving hobby. Leaf blowers help corral leaves, sticks & debris into a pile that’s easier to pick up & put into the yard waste bin, so that it doesn’t blow into the gutter systems. Noise aside, they’re actually doing a good thing for the gutter systems. When used correctly, that is.

Dr. Probably won't see this, but here it goes. Have you ever used Dr. Jart+ products? I'm using their Every Sun Day mineral sunscreen and there's no white cast so I'm😮. Would love to hear Dr. Dray's opinion because I trust her opinion so much.

For landscapers, leaf blowers are “quicker” (i.e., more cost-effective) than raking, sweeping, picking up, etc. I loathe leaf blowers and prefer hand tools. Some communities are banning gas leaf blowers due to emissions and noise-pollution concerns.

I'm in NC in the mountains and you won't see anyone using a leaf blower. Leaves on the ground provide protection for bugs, critters, etc needed for our eco system here. We are in a rain forest type of environment which also leads to our area makes its own eco system.

Leaf blowers can be convenient; however, no one should ever make the leaves someone else’s problem. Leaves can be blown onto a tarp, and then taken to a local landfill to be turned into mulch. If you live near woods, and if it’s acceptable to do so, you can just drag the tarp back into the woods and spread the leaves around, which will help the environment, provided it’s done in moderation.

They absolutely should. When I worked as a care giver. I was told that I’d work 8 hours 5 days a week. It turned to 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week because the company lied about how much care the patient I had required. I wasn’t even paid the amount I was told I would be which really irked me considering I did a lot of overtime. I ended up working over 100+ hours in a little less than 2 weeks and quit due to burn out. The odd part was one of the managers told me I wasn’t allowed to quit and she got hostile with me. These companies do it to themselves.

How I use the leaf blower is to gather them all into one or two centralized spaces and then put them into bags. Same idea with using a broom. I sweep the room into one or two spots and then it goes into a dustpan. I don't know if that's the same method the big commercial landscape companies use though

I work in the medical field and I can say that every hospital I've worked has a policy of doing whatever is needed no matter the effect on you personally. I think partially because they are always understaffed- either because they are trying to save money or because there is a lack candidates to hire. Interestingly when I was traveling through Europe I was amazed at how many medical professionals I met on vacations/sabbaticals. Nationalized healthcare allowed them not to take out huge loans for schooling.

❤ My son's pediatrician in the hospital was probably in his 70's. He was so kind and said that babies are still so cute after all the years he's been a doctor. I can imagine his experience was very different than what doctors experience today. With that said, I think fair wages is essential. Times and people change and now we live in a country where we can express our opinions and our wants whrn it comes to employment. We all want to be treated fairly, no matter our occupation, whether we're a resident, a truck driver, an architect, a teacher, or a dolphin trainer. That's why we live in a country that allows us to have a union and / or employment representation. Fairness for all! 😊

I think the leaf blower, when used correctly, is suppose to make it easier (than, say, using rakes) to gather leaves into one pile to be bagged. Lol @ your "When I was a resident..." monologue.
