Grammy Winning producer and engineer Mike Exeter covers a heap of ground throughout this conversation. Mike talks about his work with Cradle of Filth across groundbreaking albums Dusk and Her Embrace and Cruelty and the Beast, as well as the From the Cradle to Enslave EP. He helps solve the riddle of why Jan Peter Genkel was asked to produce Cruelty and the Beast, and if you've listened to my conversations with Stuart Anstis, Nick Barker and Greg Moffitt, much of what Mike has to say expands on the topics covered in those episodes.
Other topics covered include:
♠️ Working with his good mate Tony Iommi throughout the past quarter of a century
♠️ Working on Black Sabbath's final album, and he puts to rest the speculation around Bill Ward's non-involvement
♠️ Dealing with Ozzy means that you're dealing with Sharon, so hear what he has to say about Sharon
♠️ He discusses what it was like to work with Rick Rubin
♠️ We dive into his work with Judas Priest, and Mike settles the debate surrounding Glenn Tipton's contribution to Firepower, the last Judas Priest album
♠️ He talks about working with Dio on the Heaven and Hell album from 2009
♠️ His thoughts on working with Glenn Hughes, former Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland… there's so much more.
The conversation with Mike was recorded on a Sunday evening Brisbane time, so I'd just spent two days at Gold Coast water parks with my daughters, which is why I'm a shade of beetroot red, and why I'm not as articulate as I wished I could be, but Mike more than makes up for that. An excellent addition to the 'Chronicles of Filth'!

I agree that Cruelty and Dusk are the best albums that Cradle did in the 90s. I would also include Vempire here. I also share your opinion that Midian is a letdown, but there are other albums released in recent years that, although they don't blow away the 90s material, they are definitely not sub-par. Cryptoriana and Hammer of the Witches are amazing albums. So is Godspeed. Even Nymphetamine and Thornography deserve at least considering in this discussion even though they belong the the commercial and modern era. Damnation is the odd one out in Cradle's discography and that makes it special. Bands change, people change, it's inevitable. I enjoy your interviews a lot. Cheers, mate!

I think the remastered version of 13 autums was actually done really well. We finally could hear sarah and Les! The guitars aren't pushed far back, the drum upgrade is noticeable, and Danis vocals were left alone. Awesome! The best song got its due I hope. 13 autumns and a widow is so underrated in the discussion

People can shit on the production of Cruelty all they want, to me its production is perfect and actually part of what makes it so special and successful. I wouldn't have it any other way. It is actually magical and otherworldly. But hearing about the process, I can understand why all the members felt bad about it. But they shouldn't. It feels spooky and supernatural.

I'm inclined to thinking the same. When that record was playing in my stereo after I'd come out, my mind was miles away from any consideration about studio production, mixing issues. It just sounded immensely powerful yet contained, like nothing I'd heard before.

Hey mate thx very much. Yes I’ve tried with John/Gian but even the former band members aren’t sure where he is. The most credible leads suggest that sometime after he left the band he moved to Canada and is involved in web development and design, but that’s all I’ve got.

So as a disclaimer I’ve found all of your interviews super interesting and a really good insight into one of my favourite bands. That said I do have a couple of points that I’ve been thinking about recently. You sometimes allude that Dani Filth isn’t a musician and just a lyricist which totally detracts from his skills as a vocalist. I mean love him or hate him he’s one of the greatest metal vocals of all time, I mean the man has a 5 octave range or something! That’s music. You also say suggest that cradle were only good until Cruetly, with Stuart and Nick. But Midian is up there and arguably better than Cruelty. And didn’t feature either of those members. Why not dive into that era? Like I say I’ve really enjoyed your content but would prefer a bit less bias and i feel there’s an underlying agenda against Dani Filth and that other members are just “session” musicians. Which I don’t think is the case. Anyway all the best! 🔥

Hey mate, I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and engage with some thoughtful points. It's refreshing compared to the Dani fanboys who struggle to present a coherent argument. Let's agree to disagree on Dani's impact. I remain steadfast in my opinions, including acknowledging his role in keeping the band going strong for so many years. While I wouldn't say I have an agenda, I definitely have my preferences and a platform to express them. I lost interest after I gave Midian a few spins. The essence of majesty and the NWoBHM vibe had faded away. Through Dusk and Cruelty, I've long held the view that Cradle could be seen as the spiritual successor to Iron Maiden - British, bold, globally acclaimed, with a guitarist as brilliant as Adrian Smith in Stuart. I keep thinking that you had to be there back then to appreciate the colossal impact of Stuart, Nick and Les being in the same band, as metal was reemerging through Dusk and Cruelty and other great albums from bands such as Anathema (The Silent Enigma, Eternity, Judgement- Vincent Cavanagh is a genius), My Dying Bride (Like Gods of The Sun), At The Gates (Slaughter of the Soul), Carcass (Heartwork, Swansong), Paradise Lost (Draconian Times), In Flames (from Jester to Clayman), Emperor (In the Nightside Eclipse, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk), Dimmu Borgir (the Astennu written material) to name a few. I may sound old-fashioned, and I love that most bands are still touring, but I'd take almost any band's '90s output over anything they've done since, so it's not just Cradle. A few years ago, I realised I didn't give Paul Allender the recognition he deserved. Stuart, Nick, and Les were instrumental in the band's explosive potential, while Paul played a crucial role in sustaining Dani's enduring career; almost all the songs were written by Paul from Midian to when he left. If anyone's contribution within the group was underestimated, it would have to be Paul's, and I sincerely hope that I've conveyed enough to recognise the credit he truly deserves.

@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast you make a good point being there at ground level in the 90s. I came onto the metal scene in the early 2000s. Which leaves an interesting point in itself, are we just biased to the musical moments in time that we hold dear? I have a connection to Nu-Metal, a lot of that is due to me growing up with that during a particular point in my life. And I’m the same, I was dismissive of Paul’s contribution before, due to not liking some of the riffs on the later albums. I will say though that we know Dani doesn’t write the riffs or music, but he still has a musical contribution in his vocals and lyrics. Which are PHENOMENAL. They still greatly add to the band, so I still think it’s unfair to dismisss his musical contribution in that sense. But at the end of it all I really appreciate your time and efforts into making this series happen, and it is YOUR podcast and if I wanted to do one I should do it myself etc. it’s your church so to speak. But maybe I’d like a bit less Dani bias as a listener. Still really enjoying all the interviews and find everyone’s perspective really interesting. Cheers!
