Yes, I stand by my opinion that Midian is far from the meisterwerk many fans proclaim it to be. And agreed, Stu is such an essential aspect of CoF yet so overlooked. Glad you liked the chat!

@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast The thing is Midian has its great moments. Vempire, Dusk and Cruelty are great moments from start to finish. I get that the Vempire and Dusk material was already written for the most part but Stuart improved it tenfold to make these albums the masterpieces they are.

Stuart is my favorite musician that was in the band as well! I'm looking forward to his band Ninepence hopefully releasing an EP. Cheers to you, Scars, for this interview with Stuart. Cruelty and Vempire are my personal COF records that are jewels!

i still prefer Vempire over Dusk . perfect mix (Nick drumming is unbelievable) and on spot blend between BM & Goth. Dusk is way to gothy imo and Cruelty the mix is terrible. Damnation and a day is the best COF post Midian

@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast and I also agree with you when it comes to the guitars in Midian. Midian may be a well written and really melodramatic album (but not as well written as Cruelty), but it's kind of formulaic to me. I mean there's nothing new and mind-blowing that would excite me and make me love it for what it is. Most of the elements there have been in the previous albums and were much, much better than those found there. It seems that Cradle started copying themselves. In the end, Midian shows a big fact about black metal. Black metal itself is a very serious genre when it comes to the music: if you don't take things seriously, it leaves you forever.

I was there! I've got the whole show on a bootleg VHS, but I've no way of getting it digital. It was a fantastic gig!

Yeah that comes up a lot, Vempire. I must confess even though I bought it back in 96, once I heard Dusk I barely listened to Vempire. I think the production isn’t as vast as Kit’s on Dusk which put me off at the time. If Stuart and I ever chat again I’ll definitely dive into the songwriting a lot more.

Recently I gave another listen to Midian and man, that album doesn't suck at all, it's a massive album! Saffron's curse, just read along to the lyrics. Heck, even so is From the Cradle to Enslave!! Art in its purest form!! Andrew, I've listened to more than a few of your interviews now and I'll just be frank, it sounds like you're taking a really predetermined angle with them. With Lindsay you were trying hard to get confirmation for the "Dani and the Filths" perspective which to them was nothing more than a funny joke, and I get a feeling that your general aim is to get some confirmation for the idea that it's all Dani's fault that the band had so many members, their sound isn't like Cruelty, and that Dani is some kind of power obsessed Napoleon. But the reality is just very different and you could see that if you could take a listen to their many albums and set your disappointment aside. If you listen to any album, they're all on Spotify, and compare it to the four cornerstones, Principle, VEmpire, Dusk and Cruelty, you will hear that *all* new albums contain similar elements to these four in some way or another. Plus, bands are allowed to explore. Plus, CoF is a band that tours a lot and for months at a time, and it's never a given that band members will remain friends and not get fed up throughout the tours in their really tiny shared mobile homes i.e. the tour bus. Plus, you have an interest in 4 or 5 years of a band that has really progressed for over 30 years, but, you stopped listening after Midian which you really dislike YET you are trying to add a current day perspective to the band's entire 30+ year repertoire. I honestly think yours is not a fair angle, and you're not doing this band any justice by how you are conducting your interviews when trying to dig up shit and delivering your own commentary all biased towards your own disappointment. It's within their right to explore and switch members as often as they want and experiment and share those experiments with the audience! In simple terms just stop being so wrecking negative and at the very least get up to speed with what the band has been doing, the albums, the tours, the shows and how the godforsaken pandemic has affected everything. Show some respect don't just dig up shit and stir it with your fingers. Right now it's just sour grapes from the sad point of view that the band kind of died after Cruelty. Well it bloody didn't! Cradle rocks and they're like a fine wine, takes time to mature!! Time to highlight their massive successes too!

I’ll use this as an opportunity to address a few things and reiterate some long-held views for everyone reading: • My interest in the band is from 1994-1999; I have heard the albums crafted since, and it’s the sound of a very different band and not one I enjoy • The chats with Dani, Richard and Lindsay were all organised through their agent due to album releases or Australian tours. I was invited to participate, so I thought, why not? The trade-off is that I’m obliged to focus on the catalyst for the conversation and not wander too broadly into the subject matter I’d rather discuss • I invited Ben, Greg, Paul, Stuart, Nick and Was onto the show, and I gave all editorial oversight; you are hearing what they want you to hear • Yes, of course, I have an agenda. I want to discuss the old days. People are overwhelmingly responding positively to the conversations, which is added incentive to keep seeking an audience with the old band members and discuss what could have been. • As so many have expressed to me, I, too, am beyond disappointed the Clive Barker concept album featuring Stu, Les, and Nick didn’t eventuate. I’ve heard Stu’s Bastard Sun demo, and believe me… the riffs and guitar leads are gargantuan, truly majestic. The Cruelty follow-up had all the ingredients to be the band’s magnum opus • There are many channels and episodes out there focusing on the new stuff and talking up Dani’s career acumen. You won’t hear me doing that or talking up material post the new millennium because I choose not to • As Dani is the one constant in the band as musicians, staff, crew, and management change, it is entirely reasonable to ask questions and hypothesise what’s going on • Paul carried the band from Midian to his exit, and as much I want to say more, I can’t. But forget about the band and his guitar playing; Paul is a good bloke, a genuinely exceptional fella, and deserved much better. Read into that what you will • I will continue to hope that Les, Robin, Sara, Fay Woolven, Mike Exeter, Jan Peter Genkel, Paul Ryan, Jon Pritchard (AKA Kennedy), Rishi Mehta, Mags Magoolagan, Danielle Cottington and Dan Spriggs all accept an invitation to appear on the show *Dave Hirschheimer has very politely declined to chat* RIP Andrea Haugen. @@ScarsandGuitarspodcast alright mate fair enough and yes, i did offer my support and will continue to do so, you are a very good interviewer and you're able to get your interviewees to open up and share some very interesting stories. The thing about it being the sound of a different band now, alright, agree to disagree on that. The only thing I want to say is that there isn't necessarily a good versus bad story here but an evolution of a band with Dani's characteristic vocals and lyrics, not always as good, but, overall commendable. So my comment was made in good faith, just expressing my thoughts after having binged most of the interviews 😆 watch out for tunnel vision, but you did put hard work into those interviews, so lots of thanks for that. I had some worries but also thanks for allowing me to express those, and will gladly be watching what the future holds in store mate cheers.

Paul is an exceptional bloke, a fella I’d be glad to call a mate. I may not be as big a fan of his guitar work as Stuart’s, but any commentary I have about Paul is not intended to diminish his contribution. I say what I feel, and I say it within the context of the moment. I’ve said in the intro to my chat with Paul that I didn’t necessarily understand the importance of his contribution to the band. I now believe he is the group’s most crucial guitarist. Without Paul, the band wouldn’t have survived post-Midian. There are things Paul has shared with me that I can’t share because he’s asked me not to, but he has a tremendous story to tell about his time in the band. Hopefully, he’ll do that after enough time has passed.

Cruelty is much better than Midian

Midian is a step down towards total gayness.

Midian is the only post-Stuart record I fully like. Crytoriana and all those other ones I don't like the new sound.

@@lukeskywalkerjediknight2.013 that would have been cool for a cruelty lineup revisited, but that era has broken off on their own thing. Robin and Les just disappeared, Nick is on slight bitter terms with Dani, Gian lives in Canada as well as bad terms with Stuart, and Sarah I don't know. I guess somethings are best left to the past.
