I agree fully, Tony seems to be very relaxed during this interview. Maybe it has something to do with the interviewer ~ she is after all the daughter of the inventor of the ARP, an instrument that Mr.Banks used to sit full potential throughout the earlier years of Genesis.

The secret "weapon" of Genesis. He does not have the recognition he deserves, since most people always resume Genesis to the classic battle "Collins vs Gabriel", but Tony Banks' presence is always underrated. One of the greatest keyboardists in the history of music.

He was the dominant composer in Genesis and very domineering in pursuit of getting his way. Unfortunately it resulted in Steve Hackett leaving the group out of frustration. It's too bad they couldn't find a compromise because Genesis was never the same after Wind and Wuthering. It turned out to have more impact than Gabriel's departure.

Well...for me,there is no such thing as Gabriel era and Collins era; Genesis ,from the early days until now ,it was always the Banks era.

Not as much. Hackett was great, but you can't have more than two roosters in a band. Banks and Gabriel were.

Dina - my dad bought an synthesizer directly from your dad back in 1970 - possibly one of the first privately owned ARP 2500s. Grew up with it in the house until I drove it to a collector in Detroit in 1989 or so. Serial number was 12. By then I was already a massive Genesis fan, particularly the early records. Great to hear Tony talking about ARPs and Genesis!

Tony is so humble and modest. He is too hard on himself I think as far as talent...he is amazingly talented with his interpretation of a melody and beat and percussion and amazing scales and arpeggios.

Great interview with my absolute hero Tony banks the back bone of genesis music. I’m a synth geek love all past and present synthersizers the best synth of all time ARP 2600 awesome closely followed by the mighty Mini moog. Tony your a legend good luck with the tour RIP. Arp had two fundamental blunders on otherwise perfect synthesizer design. While Moog lacked tuning stability which Bob Moog clearly explained the reasons later on, the Arp had no fixed tuning points in which you could immediately start very near A440. So you really almost need to keep the oscillator frequency fixed once you get it to be in tune. If you were going for sound effects none of that mattered but in a situation where you didn't have time to re tune your course oscillator frequency between songs it was a pain. The other flaw was the stupid knob for pitch bend. Sometimes being different just wasn't worth it. But overall in terms of modulation potential the Arp 2600 and Odyssey generally outshines the minimoog by huge margins. The 2500 was more in the Moog 55 league and generally financially out of reach for all practical purposes. It still is if you can find one. Soundwise I think both the Moog and the Arp shine righteously in their own way and are amazing.

I went to see Genesis in Houston and was able to see them perform “ The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway “ back in the 1970s. It was a great concert. What a wonderful memory I have of that.👍🏻 Tony Banks was my favorite he seemed the most grounded and reserved of the whole band.

This is a great interview saw Tony in '86 he still had the Arp quadra in his rig I'll never forget I sat behind the stage so I got to see him from a good angle, he was incredible to see live, big fan.

The core of this brilliant interview is, that Dina is such a nice person and gives you the impression that you can open up to her. Obviously Tony enjoys talking with her and the whole atmosphere is perfect for getting into details of his outstanding art and where it comes from. This channel needs much more support and clicks because the foundation is doing a great job.

I started studying music when I was ten years old and it was Bank's work that caught me up immediately. My first concert was MAMA tour if that gives away my age a bit. No finer gentleman than Mr. Banks to play and write the masterpieces he does. First CD I bought was 'A Curious Feeling'.

I've been a fan since I was 14 and married a man who was also a fan then brought our teenaged daughter to see Genesis play in the 80's. I was always in awe of each of the band members talents and their integrity. I would have paid money to sit in a corner watching the process of how Tony creates such diverse, amazing tunes.

I saw them 8 times. I'm a keyboard player. Occasionally I have this dream, maybe once a decade, where I'm onstage playing for Genesis in his place. Total hero identity dream. I'm a halfway decent rock keyboardist. He's the best keyboardist in the world.

@@sspbrazil The tour is really about a retirement fund, that’s why the ticket prices are astronomical. Don’t get me wrong, if I could afford it I’d go and I imagine the stage show will be stunning. However if this is the last tour, they should have bent Steve Hackett’s arm to return.

All bands charge these prices nowadays. Yes it's a pisser. I'm just happy that I'm going to see them twice in Glasgow. Doesn't bother me at Phil is in a seat for the show. Could be for the last time ever that they tour!!! Saw Phil at the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago and was amazed it was his 16 year old son drumming. Absolutely amazing!! I thought it was some top level session drummer he'd recruited. Looking forward to these shows. Just hope they change a good part of the setlist from 2007 and they do Dance On A Volcano.

Yes, definitely a "10/10". As a youth, I made-due with anything and everything I could fabricate, to get as close to "The sound", or Tony's sound. Many friends/Musicians asked/relied on my creations, and in 1978, I decided to trade some guitar gear, for a Pro Soloist. You cant let those sit around in storage, so eventually the original one no longer worked, so my intention was to get another used one, which cost only $600.00, but which happened to work just fine. And then, after a few more years, I "lucked-out" and found a "Pro DGX" (a Soloist, but has buttons instead of switches above the keys). This one has "sat around" for nearly 30 years now, I only use it during song writing/recording, and it still has that ultimate "Tony" Oboe sound. Nothing compares to it. There. That is my Arp testimony! Also, Tony Banks is still the best.

Here are the elements which Tony Banks reigns king of all rock keyboard composers arrangers and performers: -melody -tones -creative chords -mixing tones of organ with synths , piano -melding with guitar -solo voices on Arps -mellotron is integral -additive tones in chords -consistency of style -focus on beauty To say that any other keyboardist is even in his galaxy is patently absurd

I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, thank you Dina, Tony, and the ARP Foundation!! I don't think I've ever heard Tony go into such depth about the Quadra before. Never had the luxury of playing one myself, but having first "discovered" Genesis in the Duke/Abacab era, I was initially struck by just how amazingly "cool" that synth looked, and I loved the synth sounds on those two albums. I've since read up on the Quadra's features, and it really is rather unique. So happy to here it get some well-deserved love!

Although it wasn't me, I was another that fit into that category. With a pink or multicoloured mohawk, I was also a huge Genesis fan. Something that confused many people when I'd go and see them live with the whole punk image going on. My musical taste has always been eclectic, but Genesis has been the one constant over the last 45 years since i was first introduced to them.

Tony's a legend. He is my favorite Progressive Rock player of all time. Not to mention a Major part of Genesis's awesome sound. I do hope they decide to NOT tour anymore. It was so sad to see Phil in a chair relegated to having to step down on almost all of his songs due to the fact he cant bring it anymore.

My musical taste has never been restricted to genres. I can appreciate musical genius wherever I hear/see it. I have been a fan of Genesis for all of my adult life. I even created my own genre for Genesis. "Precision Rock" was my pet name for it. I have always been amazed by Tony's keyboard playing. Especially his ability to play multiple keyboards at once. Watching him play "Robbery Assault & Battery, with one hand over top of the other, playing the same keys in different combinations, totally amazes me every time I watch it. When a band puts musicians together that are perfect for each other, something special happens. Genesis hit that, spot on. One thing of note: I never really cared for Peter's vocal quality. For that reason, I never got into the older Genesis until recently. My first introduction to the group, was in 1978, by a barracks roommate, while I was serving in the US Marine Corps. "Seconds Out" was the album that captured me.

Tony has been my favorite rock composer for many decades.

Tony is one of the best prog rock keyboard players ever. Some of my favorite progressive rock albums are Genesis records. Tony's compositions and playing set him apart. A great example is his into to Firth Of Fifth or playing the mid section of Cinema Show. Tony's signature complex melodic sounds are quite memorable. I had a chance to play an ARP Odysey and a Pro Soloist which I know Tony loved and it made me want to learn how to play piano, still a drummer however. Great interview!! I was surprised to hear that Tony used his sampled piano sounds for “Five,” along with some minor computer embellishments with the orchestra. It does make sense though, as I think he got exactly what he wanted, and it sounds wonderful. His sharp sense of humor is still intact too!

Dion, The Wanderer...who knew!...........I'm a huge Genesis fan and know nothing about piano/keyboard playing. I play drums and sing but this guy just made me sit up and listen back in '78. He wrote a number that appeared on a Genesis album. The track is Many Too Many and typical of Tony's very natural ability to write and compose in a way that shows the man's natural gift for producing great work. I look back now and realize how often the tracks I consistently listen to are his, either in their entirety or have a high percentage of his input. I just wish he had even more recognition.

ahh Tony, love ya man and total respect, however , interesting how you virtually describe how i felt...edit, at just around the 11 minute mark ,basically after Duke as an avid Genesis fan. I'm sure you fully understand. Thanks so much for all the beautiful stuff from 70 to 80 roughly and loved all your solo material.

Bonjour to you and bonjour to Tony, fun to see a covid interview of Tony behind his keyboard. Makes him more like one of the guys in the meeting instead of those all to staged commercial interviews. Bravo for doing that. Also getting to know the daughter of an inventor like your dad is really fun. Thanks for ypur down-to-earth-‘ness! Back to Tony… Still listens to his material but I would have like to hear how he felt going back on the road worldwide again at his age. I say that in a good way. It’s just that at a point in your life, and mine for that matter, you prefer the close proximity of the people you love better . So the priority becomes that for cherishing that time. Especially in times of covid. We never know. So again, hail to the chief ! Nice work Tony nice work Ms Pearlman . Continue to impress us for years to come. We are listening.

Selling England by the Pound is where Genesis peaked in my humble opinion. ARP, Mellotron, organ all gelled so well with Steve's guitar on that lovely, melodic album. Also a little nod to Peter's flute often overlooked but missed in later albums.

Great interview, Tony! So, when is Tony getting his ARP 2500 just because ... + The Wanderer is the best + 36:01 😁 + Templates are great! They are used by loads of soundtrack composers - good to see Tony joining them in a way. I like that I can set up all orchestra (or other) instruments as I want and reuse different templates for different styles. Like just piano in 4 rows. Put timings in etc - it's really cool.
