This week we continue to hear from Thomas Schaller. We take a look at several of his paintings and talk about his approach and philosophy.
We discuss the topic of inspiration and how he has learned to be resilient in times when he doesn’t have any “good ideas.”
I hope you enjoy the conversation!

One myth he dispels so beautifully is that once an artist reaches "professional" status, especially if their work is selling, that they never produce "bad" paintings again, or paintings that "don't work." Nothing can be further from the truth. But even producing paintings that don't work always teach artists something. They 're always learning. Thank you, Matthew, and Tom, for this interview. You are both inspiring, especially to those of us who are committed to watercolor and doggedly trying to learn it, but refuse to give up!

Always a pleasure to listen to Mr. Schaller. Just a few moments in and I'm learning a lot. Here I thought, after seeing many, many of his paintings, that he'd hit this apparent stride long ago- to find just now that he feels that hes STILL developing and feels he's improving by leaps. Incredible. You just look at an artist like this and think, " this is a painter who is just at the pinnacle of skill in what he does. And he's been there so long he can do it in his sleep." It's so great to hear how I feel about my painting, expressed by someone like Mr. Schaller. He's so incredibly skillful, yet so humble. So amiable. Thank you for the upload. I'd love to sit and listen to Tom's life stories over cosmos and California rolls. He's a wonderful painter and a hell of a human being.

Thanks Kalthleen! It's a wooden drafting table that allows you to change the angle. I've had it a few years and I can't remember the name of it...
