A Country Farmhouse Renovation Jumpstarts A New Way Of Life

It's a classic tale: Debbie Gray left a busy life in financial services in Toronto and moved to the country to farm chickens and make honey with her company, Heritage Bee. She and her partner renovated a 30-year-old-old farmhouse in the Hills of Mulmur, Ontario, enlarging the kitchen and updating the bathrooms and mudroom to make it light and bright. The farmhouse was faithfully built to mimic century houses in the area, but Debbie swapped out the dining room for a new home office for her business. After converting an outbuilding into a chicken coop, the oversized garage was renovated to create a 1,000-square-foot apartment to accommodate Airbnb clients, and eventually her own family. See how the fairytale unfolds (with a star appearance by a chicken named Betty White!).

'Humans are meant to move their bodies'. This statement is something I learned by my start in flipping land. My husband and I became the first people I know to buy 'junk' land and make it something useful and beautiful. I learned that by doing and moving my body, you can do anything and everything-thus creating beauty.

I’ve been following this channel for years and never comment, but this was too good of an episode not to say anything. While farmhouse isn’t my personal style, the thought that was put into every single detail of the home, barn, apartment and even the van is spectacular. What a beautiful space. It’s so warm and inviting just like it’s owner. I totally agree that we need to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature. I’m going to take her advise about making as much money as I can in the city so I can move out into country later on.

Love this tour because it reminds me of my parents/my childhood home. It’s a similar style and they also have a beautiful detached garage with loft. I’ve always loved the idea of multi generational living and that space makes it feasible.
