Simply incredible* Mark reminds me of my woods teacher Mr. Thomas- he made very detailed waterfowl decoys and inspired us to make furniture we didn't think was possible- Mark is humble and so talented- what a beautiful way to honor trees and all their splendor* ty!

"...I use a 42" radius in almost all that I build" and of course, 42 is the answer to the universe ;-) but I think I've watched this video 5 or 6 times, always enjoy listening to his calm manner and exceptional workmanship, good to know that there are still people out there that have such passion.

I always enjoy hearing the stories of how each craftsman came to do the work they love! Hard work and perseverance seem to be common character traits for most of them. Mark Whitley's peaceful, unhurried demeanor is as amazing as his unique and beautiful furniture designs! The twisted table was awesome! Loved the ebonized finish on the base! Another great episode, Eric!

Love this. Having made furniture and specialize in restorations of buildings as well as furniture I truly enjoyed this. The work is a form of self expression I have believed for a many number of years. Truly. enjoyed the video.

That was absolutely awesome you are the woodworker of my dreams believe it or not when I was a kid my dad restored at 1910 Schacht automobile those were made in Cincinnati he had to remake all of the fenders and he used a similar method of bending that car was donated by my mom to a Cincinnati museum. I am now 73 and still woodworking

Ok I actually just found this channel and as someone who builds some furniture and also loves making documentary style films, I appreciate every aspect of these productions. So well done and stories that I agree need to be told. Also there's just something so absolutely likeable and relatable with how Eric does the interviews and leads you through these stories. He's one of those rare guys that you watch and think, "We would totally be friends" :). So much of a pro that I'm really surprised I haven't seen these until now. Keep up the great work! I've got some catching up to do so I'll just be here binge watching all of these. LOL.

I have watched this episode twice now and it reminds me how satisfying it is to work with your hands. I was a carpenter and drywall hanger and it brings me back to that feeling of instant gratification felt by a tradesman and a craftsman. Keep up the good work Eric, I hope you have many more seasons of this fascinating show.

It is very encouraging to hear how long it takes to make a beautiful piece, and the number of steps involved. Encouraging because as I develop the repertoire of my own skills and tackle new projects I sometimes feel like a dolt because it seems like someone more skilled and knowledgeable would knock things out a lot more quickly. Great production.

I can make a table completely by hand in 2 days that no machine woodworker can match for finish. The more detailed and complexity a furniture has the longer it takes to produce. Furniture has always been either a simple craft pieces or a complex luxury piece. Mass imported manufacture has now replaced the general craft pieces of furniture but it is no where near the quality. There is nothing wrong with manufactured furniture when it has quality and good design. Some of the most beautiful things such as cars, aircraft, tools and so on are factory made but they have a detail and skills involved. Grand Seiko watches are factor made but they still involve skilled craftsmen but are expensive to buy.

Eric, your content is exactly what I need as background noise as I finally transition from setting up my shop properly and studying to actually taking those first steps into crafting. For those of you who may not be at the craftsman level like myself and feel daunted that you aren’t currently able to produce art gallery quality, remember, this is journey. Enjoy the time spent and appreciate what you are doing. Your skills will improve, it just takes time to hone your ability to that perfect bevel angle. Have you thought about doing any episodes on gathering and selecting materials? That adds such depth to the heart and of whatever you create.

A laminate would work but I would suggest an epoxy due to the moisture.

Awesome table. I had a question on the ebonizing. After scuff sanding the tannic acid & iron oxide, do you repeat applying both tannic acid and iron oxide or only the iron oxide?

We are trying this. Question... After you add acid, then add rust, then dry. You said might have to repeat a couple of times. Do you still have to do the acid again? Or just do the rust again?

You might need to apply the ebonizing mixture to the wood more than once. It will depend on how dark you want the finish.

I’ve made the vinegar & steel wool solution but never added the tannic acid. Please tell me more about this solution. Is there a recipe that works best? I think this might be the gem stone I’m missing.

He uses Urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesive. To prevent springback you need glue that gives you a hard glue line and has high bonding power. Here in Germany we use polyurethane glue which works just as fine and are broadly available. His glue has a shorter curing time on the other hand.

The idea of heirloom furniture is mostly gone in my opinion. The younger generation could care less about some table or chair grandpa made when he was alive. They are more interested in 1000 dollar iPhones. I speak from my own experience I have a woodshop and have been working with wood before the internet was around. I am the unknown craftsman. AJ

@@CraftsmansLegacy There's definitely going to be a new wave of woodworker. In my area the used woodworking machine market was very good. It's picked clean. KZfaq has become the resource for free information. I watched your and I liked it. I also know there's a lot more to what was shown. I wish you well buddy. Good luck always

@@aj7470 It is not that they do not care I think it is that they do not understand. Most of them do not understand a good watch, good car, nice house, quality clothing or a nice flower arrangement. I had a niece like that and when she was shown the different her mindset completely changed. Now in terms of Iphones out of the phones they are one of the better made phones and will last. I am still using a several year old Iphone that still works while other people have moved onto their third phone.
