Hey guys! Today I talk about BLI's mistake of putting smoke units into (plastic) engines which weren't originally designed to handle smoke, and the detrimental effects from it. Their persistent refusal to upgrade or modify old tooling to better incorporate new features is the main issue, and it needs to be addressed. Enjoy!
Note that this is an issue that only plagues engine models which tooling was created before the invention of BLI's smoke unit, aka before paragon 2...back then when most of their engines had plastic boilers. This includes the PRR I1sa, NYC J1, PRR T1, Reading T1, N&W, UP MT73, PRR M1, and others. Note that certain engines like the ATSF 4-8-4 partially combated this issue by using brass smoke stacks, on a plastic body. This greatly helped in reducing warping, but the smokebox was still susceptible.

Great criticism video! I agree with you. For plastic shell engines like the T1, J1, and I1sa, they continually cause melting problems. Or as I like to call it, "boiler melting syndrome". Hence, every TCS job has me gut them out, and the overall reliability of the model goes up as a result.
@trainman440

Lol yup! When you do remove the electronics tho, I think you should also remove the smoke units at the same time and replace the space with a chunky weight, to make your engines run better. Otherwise youre just wasting the precious space inside the boiler!

@@SRC_model_rail I would never put a speaker inside an engine as it just takes up valuable space which could be used for weight instead to make an engine pull more. The only time Id consider ever putting a speaker inside an engine would be if its already too heavy where additional weight would be unnecessary...and theres STILL spare space for a speaker. But Ive yet to find any engine like that.

While I haven’t had engines melt from a smoke unit, I’ve definitely had smoke fluid ruin the boiler PCBs (mostly MTH) from the smaller wicks not soaking the recommended amount of fluid. It’s a shame smoke units can cause these problems since it can be a really cool feature! I guess BLI and MTH wanna throw ‘em in just for the sake of a gimmick.

Yes! That is definitely the move. Im glad atleast for the ATSF 3751 class, BLI chose to implement diecast/brass smoke stack, so for those who DID choose to use the smoke feature, their boilers didnt start melting. They should have done the same on other similar plastic models such as the PRR I1sa and M1a/b when adding smoke units to them.

I had a Paragon2 PRR T1. It ran well, but then I noticed I heard a squeaking noise coming from the smoke unit. I tried turning it off but it kept turning on. It never bothered me until I started doing some slow crawling on the engine. My T1 started to "skip" when doing slow crawls every time I heard the squeaking noise from the smoke unit. I got curious and did something crazy which was unplugging the smoke unit from the PCB board inside the locomotive. Then for some strange bizarre reason, the T1 started running flawlessly, that it can rival the performance of a brass engine with it comes to slow crawling. I love BLI engines, but I never cared for their smoke unit. It's messy and it leaves a nasty residue on the engine and has devasting consequences if it is not properly adjusted.

That's unfortunate to hear man. Yea it sounds like it might have some suspension issue, where not all drivers have equal weight distribution on the track. Check to see if the engine is balance. if you put a pencil between the center two drivers and the rails the engine should balance on it like a see-saw. The one thing I will say is, price DOES NOT correlate to pulling power. A $3000 brass loco will not necessarily pull more than a $10 trainset engine. I wouldn't make that sort of assumption. Bachmann recently has been well known for making great pullers that dont use traction tires, all at an affordable price. Good luck!

The side shrouding is far too thick and very noticeable (look at the piloy step/ladders at the front). Because its so thick they had the make the nose more narrow which makes the entire engine look strangely thin. Anyways, i personally wont be buying one esp with such a high price tag.

@trainman440
@trainman440 Жыл бұрын
This is a novel idea in theory but nearly impossible to apply in practice. we dont use water cause it can be detrimental to the internals...it can short circuit electronics if it leaks even at all (like if u store the engine horizontally in its box after a running session with water still inside) and it also corrodes many metals. Additionally, water vapor units would consume significantly more water than an oil smoke unit would consume oil, meaning youd be putting like 40 drops of smoke water fluid in to run for barely 5 minutes. Resulting in a MUCH larger smoke unit, which is very hard to fit into these tiny models.

I would recommend simply turning smoke off by flicking the smoke ON/OFF switch at the bottom of the loco. If your engine is a paragon3 or newer you can simply add keep alive by purchasing one from BLI's online store, and plugging it into board inside the tender. You wont even have to take the engine apart. If you want to remove the smoke unit entirely from the engine, you can do so by taking the shell off the boiler, unplugging and removing the smoke unit, and reassembling, but that isnt really necessary.

BLI wont ever do a brass hybrid hippo. They never retool models with new tooling. Plastic engines are fine as long as you dont remove the weight from inside and swap it for a smoke unit! Cheers

Paragon 2 smoke units are not good at this point, I’ve had many issues with them and i have no issues with melting, just the operation. Paragon 3 and Paragon 4 smoke units are much better then the paragon 2 ones.

Paragon2 smoke units arent nearly as powerful. it seems that after too many complaints of bli smoke units being not powerful enough, bli turned up the power on their p3 and p4 smoke units. as a result they started melting boilers more.

@@trainman440 The only issue I see with generators overheating is the smoke generator probably heat level got set too high as a mistake, its easily programmable to make it cooler and ive gotten most new locos from dealers so ive been ok

Gutting it and replacing it with lead weight is probably the best way to go about it. or simply save yourself some time and money and simply get a PCM/paragon version, which already has all that from the factory. plus easier wiring.

That's a class a I have a y6 and its all metal so must be a newer tooling with smoke in mind
